Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
There may have been no greater feeling for a Nintendo faithful than turning on "Super Smash Bros." for the first time and finding the roster ready to go for a single player adventure or a multiplayer brawl on one of a handful of classic maps. Originally, the player select screen featured Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox, and Pikachu, all stalwart characters from Nintendo's most important franchises, each with their own powers, attacks, and capabilities.
Playing through the game would generally help you unlock the unknown missing characters with Jigglypuff appearing after a single one-player playthrough, Captain Falcon appearing if you beat the single-player campaign in under twenty minutes, Ness showing up if you beat 1P mode on Normal with only three stock, and Luigi appearing if you could complete the Target Test with your core eight characters.
All of the incorrect options would appear in subsequent games in the series, often as unlockable characters. "Super Smash Bros. Melee", on the Gamecube, would more than double the character count (bringing it to 25); "Brawl" (on the Wii) would have 35. With the capabilities of DLC in later consoles, the roster would balloon, but the time the "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" on the Switch wrapped its DLC run, with eighty-nine total characters, positioning it as one of the most beloved fighter titles on any console.
The original "Super Smash Bros.", back on the Nintendo 64, released worldwide in 1999. It would become the fifth-highest-selling game for the N64, inevitably sparking numerous grassroots fighting game communities alongside its later iterations and gaining traction as an esport title.
