'X-Files' - Season 1 Trivia Questions

1. What is the first name of forrester Moore who is assisting the agents on the case?

From Quiz
"Darkness Falls" at its Toughest

Answer: Larry

He introduces himself when meeting the agents. The role was played by Jason Beghe, David Duchovny's old buddy. The filming was extremely difficult, so Beghe and Duchovny tried keeping the mood light with their friendly demeanor and jokes.

2. While in jail, Brad Wilczek refers to a certain scientist when telling Mulder about his refusal to work for the US Government. Which scientist did he refer to?

From Quiz "Ghost in the Machine" At Its Toughest

Answer: Robert Oppenheimer

Wilczek mentions Robert Oppenheimer, one of the developers of the atomic bomb, who was devastated to see how his creation was used by the government.

3. What is the phone number of the NJ Park Service that Mulder looks up in the phone book?

From Quiz The Jersey Devil At Its Toughest

Answer: 555-9873

Mulder looks up the phone while inside the casino. In case you didn't know, the casino floor behind Mulder was inserted into the background in post-production, while the scene was filmed in front of the blue screen (for cost reasons, primarily).

4. At the beginning of the episode, Mulder and Scully went to the Mahan Propulsion Laboratory to investigate the death of scientist Ronald Surnow. Where was Dr. Surnow killed?

From Quiz 1.23 "Roland"

Answer: In a wind tunnel

Ronald Surnow was working on a research project involving jet engine design with fellow researchers Dr. Keats and Dr.Nollette. The three got into an argument because Surnow wasn't willing to push the engine past Mach 15 for fear of damaging the prototype. After the two other researchers left, Surnow entered the wind tunnel to make adjustments while janitor Roland Fuller remained in the lab. Roland then activated the wind tunnel, blowing Surnow into the engine. When Mulder and Scully met with Keats and Nollette the next morning, Mulder pointed out that Roland was the only person present in the laboratory when Surnow was killed, but Keats dismissed him as a suspect because of his disability.

5. At the beginning of the episode, Scully met with Assistant Director Skinner, and later in the episode, both Mulder and Scully met with him. Who was silently present at both meetings?

From Quiz 1.21 "Tooms"

Answer: The Cigarette Smoking Man

With the Cigarette Smoking Man watching, Assistant Director Skinner told Scully that he had been disappointed in her work and that he wanted to see more traditional investigation techniques used on the X-Files. As she later told Mulder, Skinner "wanted to reel me in". Later in the episode, both Mulder and Scully met with Skinner, with the Cigarette Smoking Man watching from across the room, merely listening to their conversations. He finally spoke at the end of the episode when Skinner asked him if he believed Mulder and Scully's report. "Of course I do", he replied.

6. Mulder told Scully that he "had to pull a few strings" to make sure the case of the missing lumberjacks was assigned to them. Why did he think it was an X-File?

From Quiz 1.20 "Darkness Falls"

Answer: A similar event had happened in 1934.

Mulder showed Scully a photo of the current group of thirty missing lumberjacks, calling them "rugged, manly men in the full bloom of their manhood". He said they had disappeared without a trace and that the Federal Forest Service and the logging company had asked for the FBI's help on the case. When Scully asked why Mulder thought it was an X-File, he showed her a photo of a group of lumberjacks who had disappeared in the same area in 1934.

7. What was suggested as a possible motive for Jim Parker shooting Joe Goodensnake?

From Quiz 1.19 "Shapes"

Answer: The Parkers were involved in a court case with Joe's tribe.

When Mulder and Scully interviewed the Parkers, Jim Parker told them that he and his son Lyle had heard a noise and went to investigate because they had recently lost four cows to attacks by a wild creature. While they were investigating, Lyle was attacked by a creature, and Jim killed it. He said that he saw red eyes and fangs and thought he was shooting an animal when he fired his rifle. He said he had no reason to kill Joe Goodensnake, but he admitted that he was involved in a Federal court case over land boundaries with Joe's tribe, the Tregos.

8. Mulder and Scully were called to a jewelry store robbery/murder by Mulder's former boss, Agent Reggie Purdue. What did Purdue find at the scene that linked the crime to Mulder's first case?

From Quiz 1.16 "Young at Heart"

Answer: A note

Purdue had been Mulder's boss when he first joined the FBI. They worked in the violent crimes section, and Mulder's first case involved John Barnett, a "trigger-happy" robber who had killed seven people while committing his crimes. Mulder believed that Barnett was working with someone at an armored car company since he always knew when to commit the crimes, so Mulder had used fake manifests to try to set a trap for him. But Barnett found out, and he started leaving notes for Mulder like the one that Purdue found at the crime scene. It said "Fox can't guard the chicken coop".

9. Following the shootings at the bank, both Agent Jack Willis and the bank robber, Warren Dupre, were in the same emergency room at the hospital. What happened to Dupre's body while the staff worked on Willis?

From Quiz 1.15 "Lazarus"

Answer: It reacted to the defibrillator shocks administered to Willis.

Dupre was quickly declared dead, and the staff focused on saving Agent Willis. They weren't able to get a pulse after thirteen minutes and were about to declare him dead, but Scully insisted they keep trying with the defibrillators. When they administered the additional shocks to Willis, both bodies jolted, although the staff was focused on Willis and didn't notice Dupre. Finally they received a heartbeat on Willis, around fourteen minutes after he had first gone into cardiac arrest.

10. At the beginning of the episode, Scully's parents visited her house for dinner. What literary nickname did Scully's father call her?

From Quiz 1.13 "Beyond the Sea"

Answer: Starbuck

Scully called her father "Ahab", and he called her "Starbuck"; both names are from "Moby Dick". After her parents left, Scully fell asleep on the couch. When she woke up, she saw her dad sitting in a chair mumbling, but she couldn't hear what he was saying. She told him that she thought they had already left. Then the phone rang and it was her mother, telling her that her dad had died from a heart attack. When she looked back at the chair, it was empty. Later in the episode, Luther Lee Boggs would also call Scully "Starbuck".

11. When Mulder and Scully headed to their car after spending a day in court, Mulder was surprised to find the car opened; he was sure he had locked it. What did they find in the car?

From Quiz 1.12 "Fire"

Answer: A cassette tape

Scully asked Mulder about the cassette tape sitting on the dashboard, and Mulder responded, "I told you I locked the door". Mulder played the cassette, which told about a British MP who also received a cassette tape that when played, armed an explosive device, and when the MP tried to open his car door, the car exploded. Mulder looked nervously at the door handle, only to have the door suddenly opened by Phoebe Green (Amanda Pays), startling Scully.

12. The fathers of the girls were both found dead with the poison digitalis in their bodies, but what was the cause of their deaths?

From Quiz 1.11 "Eve"

Answer: Extreme blood loss

The official cause of death was listed as hypovolemia, extreme blood loss. Joel Simmons was missing 75 percent of his blood, and when Mulder interviewed his daughter Teena, she stated that her father had been exsanguinated. When Mulder and Scully realized that both deaths occurred at the same time, Scully suggested that there were two serial killers working together, but Mulder dismissed that possibility. He thought the crimes were related to similar cases involving cattle, and he thought extraterrestrials were responsible.

13. "An unidentified bogey" was picked up on radar at the U.S. Space Surveillance Center in Wyoming. What did the commanding officer tell his staff the item was?

From Quiz 1.10 "Fallen Angel"

Answer: A meteor

The technician who was tracking the bogey stated that it was moving erratically and that "no known aircraft can maneuver like this". It was reported to have crashed outside of Townsend, Wisconsin at over 800 mph. The commander, Colonel Henderson, told them that it was a meteor and the apparent bizarre movements were due to equipment malfunction. He then made a phone call, reporting a "fallen angel".

14. What does a 1977 photograph of Mars' surface appear to be?

From Quiz 1.9 "Space"

Answer: a human face

The news from 1977 is important to this episode because the creature inhabiting Lt. Col. Belt seems to have "joined" him during a space flight from this time period. Also, the photo eerily resembles the alien creature.

15. Scully described their killer profile as: "Indeterminate height, weight, sex; unarmed, but extremely _____."

From Quiz 1.14 "Gender Bender"
