Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chemistry - Which element did Ernest Rutherford use in his alpha particle scattering experiment?

Answer: Gold

The element symbol for gold is Au from its Latin name of aurum. The atomic number of gold is 79.

Gold is the most malleable metal and because of this quality, Rutherford used gold foil for the experiments in which he discovered the nucleus of the atom.
2. Astronomy - Which planet is also known as the morning and evening star and is named for a Roman goddess?

Answer: Venus

Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system. It is the only planet in our solar system which rotates clockwise. It takes about 243 earth days to complete one rotation, which is the slowest among all the planets.

Mars is also known as the red planet. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun.
3. Astronomy - The moon is the only natural satellite of Earth. What is the average distance of the moon from the Earth?

Answer: 384,000 km

Earth's moon has no atmosphere and due to no atmosphere sound cannot be heard on the moon. The size of moon is one-fourth of the size of the earth. The moon takes 27 days, 7 hours and 43 minutes to complete one revolution around Earth. It takes the same time to complete one rotation.
4. Biology - Blue green algae are also known by what name?

Answer: Cyanobacteria

The name cyanobacteria comes from the Greek word meaning blue. Influenza is a disease, often shortened to "flu". Planaria are flatworms, with species able to live in water and on land. Homo sapiens is the scientific name for humans.
5. Biology - Which cell organelle is sometimes referred to as the "powerhouse" of the cell?

Answer: Mitochondria

Mitochondria produce ATP that provides energy for the cell's basic functions, hence it is called the "powerhouse" of the cell. ATP is also known as the energy currency of the cell. Mitochondria have a double membrane structure. The inner membrane of mitochondria has finger like structures called cristae. Mitochondria have their own genetic material and therefore can self-duplicate.
6. Chemistry - What is the chemical formula of acetic acid?

Answer: CH3COOH

The chemical formula of acetic acid is CH3COOH. It is found in vinegar and is used as solvent in the manufacture of dyes and perfumes.

C6H5COOH is the chemical formula of benzoic acid which is also used as a food preservative.

HCOOH is chemical formula for formic acid which is also found in the sting of ants and bees.

C7H6O2 is the chemical formula for citric acid.
7. Physics - What is defined as the rate of flow of an electric charge?

Answer: Electric Current

Electric current is defined as the rate of flow of an electric charge.

The formula for electric current is I = q/t, where I is the current, q is the charge and t is time.

The S.I. unit of electric current is the ampere, represented by the symbol A.

The coulomb is the S.I. unit of electric charge.
8. Physics - If a man covers 10 metres in 10 seconds then what is the speed of the man?

Answer: 1 metre per second

Here, distance = 10 metre
Time taken = 10 seconds
Since speed = distance/time
Therefore, speed of man = 10 metres/10 seconds = 1 m/s.
9. A bit about scientists - This female scientist is credited with discovery of the two radioactive elements polonium and radium. Who was she?

Answer: Marie Curie

Marie Curie was a French scientist who became the first woman to win Nobel Prize. She was born in Poland.

She married Pierre Curie after completing her science and math degree. Pierre was also a scientist, and Marie and Pierre worked together.

Curie was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1903 for her work on radioactivity and in 1911 for discovering radium.
10. A bit about scientists - Who proposed the law of conservation of mass?

Answer: Lavoisier

The law of conservation of mass states: "In a chemical reaction, the mass of reactants remains conserved or in a chemical reaction, total mass of product is equal to total mass of reactants."

It was proposed by Antoine L. Lavoisier in the year 1774.
