Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Tyger, tyger, burning bright..." This line comes from a poem by what poet?

Answer: William Blake

'The Tyger" was written by Londoner William Blake. Blake was a poet, engraver, artist and printer who was born in 1757 and died in 1827.
2. The beautiful gemstone tiger eye (or tiger's eye) is brown and gold in stripes. What is it made of?

Answer: quartz

Tiger eye is a kind of chatoyant quartz. It is basically black, with iron oxide giving it the characteristic colours. It is the birthstone of Gemini, and an anniversary stone for the nineth year of marriage. Most of the world's supply of tiger eye comes from South Africa.
3. Which country is associated with tiger prawns?

Answer: Australia

Tiger prawns (Penaeus esculentus) are striped. They grow up to 340 mm in length, and are a popular seafood found in Australian waters.
4. A toy tiger appears in A.A. Milne's books about Pooh Bear. When he first appears in the Hundred Acre Wood, by what term is he described?

Answer: The strange and bouncy tigger

The strange and bouncy tigger soon settles in with the other friends in the wood. He likes to drink little Roo's strengthening medicine, though why anyone would think he needs more strength is beyond me.
5. What is golfer Tiger Woods' real name?

Answer: Eldrick Woods

Eldrick "Tiger" Woods was born in California in 1975, and holds many "youngest" golfing titles. For example, in 1991 he was the youngest winner to date of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. In 1997 he became the youngest player to win "The Masters", and in 2000 he was the youngest to complete a grand slam.
6. What is the approximate length of an adult tiger snake?

Answer: 1 - 2 metres

The tiger snake (Notechis Scutatus) is a venomous Australian snake that lives in grasslands and bush. It is widespread, and gets its name from its typical (though not invariably) striped appearance. Males are longer than females, but most of them seem to be between one and two metres in length.
7. Actor Cameron Nugest portrayed the character "Tiger Gleeson" is the very popular children's TV series "Round the Twist". In how many series did Cameron play this role?

Answer: The first one

Cameron portrayed the lively Tiger in the first series only. In Series Two, the role was played by Nick Mitchell, while Tom Budge played it in Series Three and Four. The changes were made as the original actors grew too old for the roles. A much taller Cameron Nugent later appeared in "Seachange".
8. What is the name given to the offspring of a male lion and a female tiger?

Answer: liger

This hybrid is a liger, and it is far more common than the offspring of a male tiger and female lion. That one is variously known as a tiglon, tigon or tion. The liger is also very much larger.
9. In 1968, Lulu had a big hit with the song "I'm a Tiger". What was Lulu's birth name?

Answer: Marie McDonald Lawrie

Marie McDonald Lawrie was born at Lennox Castle, Scotland, in 1948. She had her first hit at fifteen, and followed it with many more, including "Boom Bang-A-Bang" and "To Sir With Love".
10. The Tasmanian tiger was properly called a thylacine, but it had other common names as well. Which of the following did these include?

Answer: Marsupial wolf

The thylacine (which almost certainly became extinct in the 1930s) was a large carnivorous marsupial. The largest one still living is the Tasmanian devil, a different animal. The Fen tiger is thought by some people to exist in the UK and the Yowie is an Australian monster.
