Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The original title for the song commonly known as "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is "Mbube", which means "lion". What language does the word come from?

Answer: Zulu

The song was written in the 1920s by a South African singer named Solomon Linda, but it has been recorded by numerous artists, including Miriam Makeba and the Kingston Trio. The most familiar version is probably the 1961 recording by the Tokens.
2. Which of the following sports leagues does not include a team with the word "Lions" in its name?

Answer: Barclays Premier League

The NFL has its Detroit Lions; the CFL has the BC Lions, while the NCAA includes the Nittany Lions of Penn State. The Premier Leagues does use a lion in its official logo, however.
3. A lion named Clarence appeared regularly in the 1960s television series "Daktari". What was unusual about Clarence?

Answer: He was cross-eyed.

"Daktari" was a children's series about a veterinary hospital in Africa. It was a spinoff from the 1965 movie "Clarence, the Cross-eyed Lion". The other well known animal star of the show was a chimpanzee named Judy.
4. In George R.R. Martin's fantasy book series "A Song of Ice and Fire", which family is associated with lions?

Answer: Lannisters

The Lannister sigil, which is worn by their soldiers, is a golden lion on a red background. Their house motto is "Hear me roar!" The Stark sigil shows a "direwolf" (a creature that only exists in the George R.R. Martin universe). The Tullys are represented by a fish, while the Baratheon sigil is a stag.
5. Which ancient culture depicted its kings in large-scale stone murals, hunting lions on foot or in chariots?

Answer: The Assyrians

The Assyrians were a powerful force in the area that is now Iraq from about 2500 to 600 BC. Some of the stone murals show the lions being released from cages, and some historians have speculated that lions may have been bred in captivity specifically for hunting.
6. Coincidentally, you can spell the name of Simba's lioness sweetheart from Disney's "The Lion King" with some of the letters found in the name of the magic lion that rules over the land of Narnia in C.S. Lewis's "Chronicles of Narnia". What is her name?

Answer: Nala

The adult Nala was voiced by Moira Kelly in "The Lion King", while Niketa Calame supplied the voice for the young Nala. The name of the lion who rules over Narnia is Aslan.
7. What is the name of the MGM lion who roars when the company logo appears at the beginning of movies?

Answer: Leo

Leo has been portrayed by several different lions over time, named not only Leo, but also Slats, Jackie, Tanner and George. Numerous movies and television shows have spoofed Leo; some of the characters who have appeared in his place include the Muppets' Fozzie Bear, the Marx Brothers and the animated Pink Panther.
8. King Richard I of England was nicknamed "Coeur de leon". What is the English translation for this French phrase?

Answer: Lionheart

Richard I reined from 1189 to 1199. He is remembered as a crusader who fought against the Muslim leader Paladin. Although he married Berengaria of Navarre, the marriage was childless, and modern historians generally agree that Richard was likely homosexual.
9. What music artist released a 1978 album called "Lionheart" with a cover that featured the popular singer-songwriter dressed as a lion?

Answer: Kate Bush

"Lionheart" was rushed out very quickly after Bush's debut album, "The Kick Inside". The title of the album comes from the song "Oh England, My Lionheart", which makes reference to beloved English icons like Peter Pan, William Shakespeare and London Bridge.
10. The 1968 film "The Lion in Winter" starred Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn. Which English king did O'Toole portray as the aging lion?

Answer: Henry II

Hepburn played Henry's wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine. The film was based on a play by James Goldman. The cast also included Timothy Dalton, Nigel Terry and Anthony Hopkins.
