In his final Astros season, 1971, he played at least 100 games as their first baseman. Finally, for the 1972 and 1973 Cincinnati Reds he played at least 100 games as the third baseman. Menke was traded to the Reds in 1972, and since the Reds had HOF Tony Perez at first base, the team moved Menke to third base.

68. With all these baseball greats in the names of Luke Appling, Rod Carew, and Alex Rodriguez, if you took their rookie jersey numbers and added them up, which St. Louis Brown and Hall of Fame pitcher would you come up with?

From Quiz All in the Numbers

Answer: Satchel Paige

The others never played for the St. Louis Browns. Paige was the star of the Negro Leagues of Baseball and came into the Major Leagues in 1948 with the Cleveland Indians. The 1951 season found him with the St. Louis Browns while wearing the number 29 and he retired in 1953. For whatever reason other than marketing, he came back to the Kansas City Athletics for a one game appearance in 1965 at the age of 58. Appling was a 20-season career player with the White Sox and wore the number 5 in his rookie season in 1930. Carew played 19 seasons in his career all with the Twins and Angels. Going through financial difficulty after the 1898 season, the owner sold or traded all his high priced (but great) players which left the team with no chance of winning the NL pennant or anything else. The team finished the 1899 season with a dismal 20-134 record. No starter batted .300 and no pitcher won more than four games.
