This is the first episode following the end of the major story arc involving the Shadows and the Vorlons. Since that story was wrapped up in the previous episode this one opens with celebrations and a feeling of victory summed up by the Captain's personal log. "Captain's personal log: the Shadow War is over. We won. But I can't stop thinking about what it cost us and how much work is still ahead of us. Then again, maybe the doc's right. Embrace the moment. In the end, it's all we have. Trouble will come, in its own time, it always does. But that's tomorrow. Give me today and I will be happy."

Answer: Not good - He is heavily drugged and hallucinating

The episode opens with a conversation between Sheridan and Dr. Franklin... except it's NOT Dr. Franklin. Sheridan's reality is distorted and we slowly see the hallucination fall away to reveal that he is actually still being interrogated in a cell. Male Interrogator: "Well, as you can see, even though we've distorted his sense of reality, he still remains uncooperative, despite the drugs." Male Interrogator: "If we're going to put an end to this war, we've got to break the resistance at its heart. And the most efficient way to do that is to break him. To break his mind, his spirit and his body. It's only a matter of time, effort and patience. He's almost there."

Lorien is referring to the fleet that Sheridan has assembled to confront both the Shadows and the Vorlons. Together with the remaining First Ones, Sheridan hopes to force the Shadows and Vorlons to confront each other instead of destroying one another's bases. Ivanova is particularly impatient since while searching for First Ones she is separated from the rest of the fleet and would potentially miss the final battle. Lorien attempts to calm and reassure leading Ivanova to reveal, "my heart and I don't speak anymore".

Captain Sheridan gives his 'Personal Log' at the start of the episode. "We're almost ready to strike. The next few days will either mark the beginning of a new age or the death of everything we've worked for". At this point in the series, G'Kar or Ivanova seemed to be the popular choices for voiceovers at the beginning of episodes. This episode bucks that trend, probably because at the heart of the story are Sheridan's choices during this episode and how they will save many lives, but also condemn others.

Ivanova: "I need to borrow one of the White Star ships. I heard what you have in mind; I'll get it back to you before the deadline." Marcus: "We can spare the ship, but may I ask why?" Ivanova: If you're gonna attack Z'ha'dum, you're gonna need all the help you can get. And there may still be some First Ones out there that we haven't found yet. I have all the information at hand that I need to go out looking for them. Some of them might be at least as strong as the Shadows. We found one last time we tried. I think if we get a few more to sign on..."

I see you're still upset that I won't tell you my name. Well, what does it matter? If I tell you my name is Lorien, what good is that? It tells you nothing, but leaves me at a disadvantage. Words have meaning. And names have power. The universe began with a word, you know. But which came first? The word, or the thought behind the word? You can't create language without thought, and you can't conceive a thought without language. So, which created the other, and thus, created the universe? ... No. I see you're far too wrapped up in your question to consider the larger issues."

Marcus and Ivanova actually 'found' or at least met a Shadow fleet as well as the First Ones who say 'zog' while they were together on a White Star, but both didn't occur in this episode (the episodes are: "Shadow Dancing" and "Voices of Authority"). They never met the ancient Vorlon god Boogee. Marcus just said once he'll put a bucket on his head and pretend to be him (that was also "Voices of Authority").

January 8 is a recurring date in 'Babylon 5'. It was the date stated in 'Points of Departure' and the events in 'Matters of Honor' also took place around this date. It was stated in Franklin's log entry in the beginning.

Ivanova said it to Lyta, when they were in her quarters: "My father told me about it. It's the time between 3 and 4 in the morning. You can't sleep, and all you can see is the troubles and the problems and the ways that your life should've gone but didn't." I really never experienced this, but maybe I just never had that big troubles and problems (yet) ;-).

"The president wants Babylon Five shut down permanently". Of course he is telling Bester, the Psi Cop, who is a general thorn in the side to Sheridan. Talia Winters is dead by this point in the series and the other two characters feature in this episode but are on the station not having a briefing on Earth. Bester is brilliantly portrayed by Walter Koenig of "Star Trek" fame. This episode marks his fifth appearance as Bester.

The Vorlon fleets are destroying entire worlds where the Shadows have had influence. Coriana VI is a world that undoubtedly knew very little of this influence as they are not technologically advanced. The Centauri have been influenced by Shadows to a great extent with Londo, Refa and then Cartagia having alliances with them. The latter eventually agreeing to house Shadow ships on Centauri Prime. Sheridan has decided to make his stand at Coriana VI because of the population of that planet. Marcus describes the situation to Lyta, "Six billion lives on Coriana, three billion lives on Centauri Prime. We have enough ships to make a stand at one of them, so which one do you choose? It's numbers, cold unsympathetic numbers".

Answer: The Court Jester

Cartagia and the other nobles are seen laughing and joking in an early scene of "The Long Night". Much of the amusement is being instigated by the presence of a jester. Later in the episode Londo approaches the replica of the royal court on the Narn homeworld when the jesters hat rolls out to his feet. Cartagia appears, telling Londo that "humour is such a subjective thing". Such a shame that this episode marks the end of Wortham Krimmer's fantastic portrayal of the insane Emperor Cartagia.

Zack: "That's a securecam record. Thought the Doc told you to take it easy for a while." Garibaldi: "Well, I gotta do something, or I'm gonna go stir-crazy." Zack: "You, uh, keeping an eye on the Captain?" Garibaldi: "No. On him [Lorien]. The guy worries me. Everywhere the Captain goes, he's there, right at his heels, watching. How do we know he's not pulling something?" Zack: "Come on. The Captain vouched for him. Said he saved his life." Garibaldi: "I thought he died at Z'ha'dum?" Zack: "Yeah, well, after that part. Look, I don't pretend to understand it. I'm just glad he came back in one piece."

Lorien tells Sheridan that he is 'in between' life and death. Sheridan: "Between what?" Lorien: "Between moments. When we are born, we are allocated a finite number of seconds. Yours is almost used up. You're between seconds, lost in the infinite possibilities between tick and tock. Tick, you're alive. Tock... Well, it was a good life, but a short one. Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick..." Later... Lorien: "You're closer now, aren't you? Yes, I see you are. But closer to tick or closer to tock? I don't know. Only time will tell. And here, between the moments, we have all the time in the world."

The Shadows have paused in their pursuit of war and everywhere there is a sense of imminent change. Whether it is a change for good or ill, no one can tell. As no one has yet answered two very important questions: where is Mr. Garibaldi... [G'Kar is writing down his thoughts in his book] and what happened to Captain Sheridan at Z'ha'dum [Shadow vessels overlooking the crater on Z'ha'dum]."

He's not willing to give the interrogator ONE INCH, so he refuses to admit that it is lunchtime where he is. However, as the interrogator notes, they haven't fed the Captain since he was captured, at least two days' time, and he must be starving. So he finally says, "I'm sure it's lunchtime somewhere." The interrogator gives him half of his - poisoned - sandwich.

Londo is distraught on discovering the news that it was in fact Morden that arranged the murder of his one time lover, Adira Tyree. It is Lord Durano that delivers the news from the ministry of intelligence and after receiving the news Londo smashes things in his room and shouts, "he played me! He played me like a puppet!" Adira was murdered during the events of the season three episode 'Interludes and Examinations'. After which Londo presumed that Lord Refa was behind the murder and, bent on revenge, turned back to Morden for assistance. Thus explaining the quote, "he played me".

While visiting G'Kar in his cell Londo realises that Emperor Cartagia has had G'Kar's eye plucked out. When asked about it by Londo, G'Kar replies, "my eye offended him. I see things now that were invisible to me before. An empty eye sees through to an empty heart". G'Kar has already been seen wearing an eye patch in Londo's dream of his own death and also during the episode "War Without End" when Sheridan is unstuck in time.

Morden: "After the last war, my associates hid many of their ships on distant worlds. The Vorlons want to make sure that doesn't happen again." Londo: "There are over a hundred of those ships here. I assume they will be leaving now." Morden: "I'm afraid not."

Your system can't handle the stress you're putting on it. If you don't stop, you're going to hurt yourself. Look, I know this is how your people deal with grief, all right? You fast. You purify yourselves physically, spiritually. But nothing is going to be served by endangering your own life."
