4.19 "Between the Darkness and the Light" Quiz

Answer: Not good - He is heavily drugged and hallucinating

The episode opens with a conversation between Sheridan and Dr. Franklin... except it's NOT Dr. Franklin. Sheridan's reality is distorted and we slowly see the hallucination fall away to reveal that he is actually still being interrogated in a cell.

Male Interrogator: "Well, as you can see, even though we've distorted his sense of reality, he still remains uncooperative, despite the drugs."

Male Interrogator: "If we're going to put an end to this war, we've got to break the resistance at its heart. And the most efficient way to do that is to break him. To break his mind, his spirit and his body. It's only a matter of time, effort and patience. He's almost there."

Answer: False

Female Interrogator: "What about his father?"

Male Interrogator: "What about him?"

Female Interrogator: "If we bring him in and threaten to put a bullet in his head, it might encourage him to cooperate."

Male Interrogator(Franklin in Sheridan's hallucination): "No. Doesn't work. If he doesn't turn and we kill his father, it only strengthens his resolve. If we threaten to kill his father and we don't, it only weakens our position. Besides, we don't want cooperation. We want conversion. We want repentance."

Answer: He wants to hear Garibaldi's side of the story.

Number One: "Go on. It's your right. It was your guy he set up."

Franklin: "I can't."

Garibaldi: "Stephen?!"

Franklin: "I wanna hear his side of the story."

Number One: "What side? He set Sheridan up. Now he wants to set us up, too."

Franklin: "I still wanna hear his side of the story."

Answer: Kill him twice

Fortunately for Garibaldi, Lyta performs a scan and verifies that Garibaldi's story is NOT bogus. Bester was behind the whole thing. Number One refuses to believe Lyta, so Lyta sends the images she got from Garibaldi telepathically. Only then does Number One believe and let Garibaldi go.

Answer: Almost a week

Garibaldi, Lyta, Franklin and Number One hold a meeting to discuss a rescue attempt. Number One says it's possible to get inside the facility, but she won't have anyone available to help them get inside for another two days.

Lyta: "Two days? But... the captain has been in custody for almost a week. What if he can't hold out that long?"

Number One: "Then he'll be dead, or broken. Which is why I can only afford to give you a skeleton crew, just enough to get you inside. After that, you're on your own."

Answer: It has already started.

Delenn was excluded from the meeting because the League was voting on a proposal to provide ships to Ivanova's fleet in the war with Clark. If Delenn had been present, people may have said the League approved the decision not because it was the right thing to do, but because of Delenn's relationship with Sheridan.

They wanted to send a message that the council speaks as one, for the right reasons, and not out of any personal agenda.

Answer: Lyta

Garibaldi: "All right, who gulped? Somebody gulped. Look, we have got a long way to go. We're supposed to sip, not gulp."

Franlkin: "I didn't gulp!"

Lyta: "I sipped."

Garibaldi to Lyta: "You I believe."

Franklin: "Wh... Now why do you believe her and not me?"

Garibaldi: "Because when you lie, it's all over your face. She's a much better liar than you are."

Lyta: "Thank you." She pauses to think. "Wait a minute!"

Answer: An ambush is waiting for them at Mars

He tells them Clark knows they are headed to Mars next because not every ship that defects to their side REALLY defects. A fleet of advance-model destroyers will be waiting for them. "They're loyal to the new order," he adds. "They won't defect, and they won't give up."

Answer: He recognizes Garibaldi from ISN.

Garibaldi: "We're here to see the prisoner."

Guard: "Which pris-- Hey, I know you! I saw you on ISN. You're the one who turned in Sheridan."

Garibaldi: "The one and only."

Guard: "Yeah, good work! So, what's up?"

Garibaldi: "Well, we need to check on his condition. This is Dr. Stephens and his assistant, Miss Alexander."

Guard: "I didn't get anything about this."

Garibaldi: "They want deniability. Like I said, we're here to check on his condition, but what we're REALLY supposed to do is give him a little walk around the block, if you get my meaning."

Guard: "And if he falls down a few times..."

Garibaldi: "Then we need a doc to make sure he doesn't fall too hard."

Guard: "Got it. If it were anybody but you, well... go on in. But you'll have to check with the cell guards. They have final authority on visitors."

Garibaldi: "Thank you."

Answer: False

One guard rather emphatically states he does not watch TV. Instead, Garibaldi and Franklin punch out the two cell guards and Lyta takes the door entry code from one guard's mind, allowing the three of them to enter Sheridan's cell and spring him.

Answer: They are based on Shadow technology

Ivanova: "Is that what I think it is?"

Marcus: "Confirmed. Scanners indicate the destroyers are using a semi-organic hull design."

Ivanova: "Shadow technology."

Marcus: "Exactly."

Answer: God

This is a great speech by Ivanova, given as she is about to open fire on the Advance Destroyer fleet, a battle which ends with her being mortally wounded. JMS has equated this to a "give me liberty or give me death" line.

Answer: She fires first

Before she gives the speech from the previous question, Ivanova tells Marcus to "put me on with him. And give me firing control." At the conclusion of her speech, she takes the opening shot. This goes against Sheridan's traditional battle plan, where he lets the other side take the first shots, as well as against the first lesson his father ever taught him - "Never start a fight, but always finish it."

Answer: "It wasn't that bad."

She doesn't believe him, and he revises his statement: "Well... look... I- I'll talk about it when I'm ready. It's just... gonna take awhile."

Answer: To tell Marcus she loved him

As she lays dying on the Minbari cruiser, she asks Sheridan first: "They won't tell me... the truth. You're my friend, John. Tell me the truth. I'm not gonna make it, am I?"

Upon confirmation from Sheridan that the damage is too severe and she will die, she continues: "You've carried so much guilt around in your life. Don't carry it anymore for me. Or I'm gonna come back and kick your ass."

We don't see the request that he command the final battle from the Agamemnon, but it is implied. Sheridan and Delenn are about to leave Ivanova's bedside, but she calls him back. "Do something for me," she says.

Sheridan: "Anything. What is it?"

Ivanova: "Not what. Where."

The next thing we see is Sheridan stepping onto the command deck of the Aggy. As he settles into the captain's chair, he says: "With the permission of Captain James, I'm assuming command of the Agamemnon. A friend asked me to command the last battle from here."

Sadly, Ivanova never admits to any feelings for Marcus until after he has given his life to save her.
