Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Vitamin D", the boys of New Directions sing a mash-up of Usher's "Confessions, Pt. II" and what other song (by Bon Jovi)?

Answer: It's My Life

With the kids falling out of the motions and getting a little bit too laid back about Glee Club, Will incites a competition in order to stir things up. Boys vs. Girls is the matter at hand, and both sides need to create a suitable mash-up to take to sectionals.

The boys take a mash-up of "It's My Life" (by Bon Jovi) and "Confessions, Pt. II" (by Usher). The catch? Terri, who took a position as school nurse, gave them an ingredient used in decongestants to keep them mentally alert. The entire performance is done hyped-up on meds. The "It's My Life"/"Confessions Pt. II" mash-up was released as a single and appeared at #30 on the US Billboard charts, but never made an appearance on the "Glee: The Music, Vol. 1" collection.
2. In "Vitamin D", the girls of New Directions perform a mash-up of Beyonce's "Halo" and a song by which artist/group?

Answer: Katrina and the Waves

The girls, surprised by the boys' performance, are still confident about their mash-up, a cross between Beyonce's "Halo" and Katrina and the Waves' "Walking on Sunshine". When Kurt lets it slip that the boys "took something", the girls head to Terri for their own performance enhancers. Everyone, once more, is surprised by their extremely up-beat energetic performance but both sides deeply regret what they've done.

As a result, Terri is fired from her position as school nurse, but Sue is called in to co-chair the Glee Club. Like "It's My Life"/"Confessions Pt. II", the "Halo"/"Walking On Sunshine" mash-up appeared as a single (peaking at #40 on the Billboard Charts) but never showed on the "Glee: The Music, Vol. 1" disc.
3. Which New Directions member is not involved in the performance of "No Air" in "Throwdown"?

Answer: Santana

As Sue's reign in the Glee Club spreads, she takes several of the minority-based kids and forms her own group called Sue's Kids leaving Will with only five students to create a Sectionals number (Quinn, Finn, Rachel, Brittany, and Puck). While Sue's Kids perform Jill Scott's "Hate on Me", Will creates a performance of Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown's "No Air".

By the time they're actually ready to perform, Brittany and Puck have defected sides (Dutch and Jewish backgrounds made them eligible) and Quinn pretends that she is angry with the lack of leading roles to split them up for Sue's sake. "No Air" appeared on the "Glee: The Music, Vol. 1" set and was released as a single in the US, peaking at #65 on the Billboard Charts.

It is mainly sung by Finn and Rachel.
4. "You Keep Me Hangin' On", a song appearing in "Throwdown", was performed by which Glee Club member?

Answer: Quinn

Frustrated with her still-hidden pregnancy and Finn's attraction to Rachel, Quinn breaks free and sings this song with the Cheerios squad on the main field (taking to the stage as well for some choreographed dance moves). This was one of Quinn's first major musical numbers in the show, the first being "I Say A Little Prayer" in "Showmance", the second episode.
"You Keep Me Hangin' On" was released as a single from "Glee: The Music, Vol. 1" but failed to chart in the US. It was originally performed by The Supremes in 1966, reaching #1 on the charts in North America.
5. "Keep Holding On" is performed by the entire Glee Club in "Throwdown".

Answer: True

This Avril Lavigne song peaked at #56 on the Billboard charts (becoming the most popular from the episode) after its release as a single from "Glee: The Music, Vol. 1". The original hit #17 on the same chart merely years before.
At the end of "Throwdown", Sue steps down as co-head of New Directions and lets the story of Quinn's pregnancy run through the school newspaper. Although shaken and distraught, Quinn performs alongside the rest of the Glee Club for a rendition of "Keep Holding On". As the song (and episode) ends, Quinn fights to hold back her tears.
6. What Neil Diamond song was performed by Puck in "Mash-Up"?

Answer: Sweet Caroline

Dating Rachel in this episode, Puck tries to find a way to prove his leading role persona by performing a solo on his own. He selects Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" due to Diamond's Jewish background and plays his guitar for the Glee Club. While Rachel is impressed by his rendition, he also attracts the attention of Quinn during the song.

This was Puck's first solo performance on the show. "Sweet Caroline" was released as a single from "Glee: The Music Vol. 1" becoming the episode's highest-charting single (hitting #34 on the Billboard charts).

The original "Sweet Caroline" peaked at #4 on the Billboard charts and went platinum upon its release in 1969.
7. In "Mash-Up", Will is supposed to find a way to mash-up Ken and Emma's wedding song. Emma's choice is "I Could've Danced All Night". What is Ken's?

Answer: The Thong Song

While both songs are hideously different from one another, Will sets out to find a way to combine the two and he offers Emma dance lessons as his gift for their wedding. While Will does a performance of Sisqo's "The Thong Song" for Emma during their lesson, Emma has her first solo performance of the show with "I Could've Danced All Night" (from "My Fair Lady") when she tries on her wedding dress with Will.

By the end of the episode, they find that there is no way to put the songs together and make them sound good. "The Thong Song" was released as a single, but never charted in the U.S.

The original, by Sisqo, reached #2 on the Billboard R&B chart and #3 on the Hot 100 respectively upon its release in 1999.
8. In "Wheels", Artie sings "Dancing With Myself". Does he sing it alone?

Answer: Yes

"Wheels", while dealing with many issues, deals with the problems that Artie faces being confined to his wheelchair. The first song of the episode is his solo performance of Billy Idol (and Generation X's) "Dancing With Myself" which he performs in the school hallways, the cafeteria, and the auditorium.

This marks Artie's first solo performance of the show. "Dancing With Myself", while released as a single from "Glee: The Music, Vol. 1", did not appear on the Billboard charts. The original, by Generation X, first appeared in 1980 and reached #2 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Singles chart.
9. Which character won the "Defying Gravity" 'Diva-Off' in the "Wheels" episode?

Answer: Rachel

In "Wheels", Will discovers that the Regionals judges have always swayed to giving the grand prize to a school that performs showtunes. The plan? Use "Defying Gravity" from Broadway's "Wicked". While it's one of Kurt's favourite songs, he gives the lead vocals role to Rachel.

When Kurt's dad complains to Principal Figgins that his son be given a chance, Will agrees and the two of them must audition for the spot. Kurt, unfortunately, doesn't hit the high note in the song's final moments and Rachel wins the role. Kurt later reveals he botched the note for his Dad. "Defying Gravity" was the last single released from "Glee: The Music, Vol. 1". Peaking at #31 on the Billboard charts and becoming the most successful single on the album since episode 5 ("The Rhodes Less Taken") when the kids sang Queen's "Somebody to Love".
10. In "Wheels", "Proud Mary" ends the episode. What is significant about the number?

Answer: All of the Glee Club performs in wheelchairs

Originally a song by Creedence Clearwater Revival, "Proud Mary" originally charted at #1 in 1969 on American charts. The Tina Turner version of the song reached #4 on the same chart in 1993. The "Glee" version (the first song to be released on "Glee: The Music, Vol. 2") reached #76 on the charts. In the show, the entire number is used to close the "Wheels" episode. Having informed the club that they would be performing a wheelchair-based number to show their support for Artie, they chose this song and planned to use it for their Sectionals line-up. According to creators, the "Proud Mary" number caused the most injuries of any number in the show to date.
