Coach Sue dislikes Will with a passion and wants to see him fail. Coach Beiste does not appear until season two. Emma's feelings for Will are a source of tension in the show, for the first season. She is now married to Carl, a dentist. Terri does not like Emma, evident when she calls Emma a "home-wrecker" because Will divorced her.

Tina speaks with a stutter for most of the first season. It is revealed that her stutter is being faked in "Wheels". Tina says that she started speaking with a false stutter because she didn't want to give an oral presentation in her history class. Brittany says this in the episode "Bad Reputation". The episode focuses on the "Glist", a ranking of Glee members. Brittany's off-the-wall comments turn away from the plot, but they entertain, nonetheless.

Kurt is constantly harassed because of his sexuality. One football team member in particular, Dave Karofsky, harasses Kurt on a daily basis. Kurt learns from Blaine, a boy from the competing sectionals team "The Warblers", that his school has a no-tolerance policy on bullying, which keeps Blaine safe. Kurt eventually transfers. Finn gets upset about it because Kurt doesn't discuss it with him first.

In "Auditions", Finn is kicked off of the football team after asking Beiste if Artie can try out, because Beiste assumes that Finn is picking on her. She later appoints Sam as the new quarterback. This is the first episode that features Sam, who ends up joining Glee as well.

Mercedes and Santana sing "The Boy Is Mine" while fighting over Puck in "Laryngitis". They start to push each other around at the end of the song, but Will steps in and stops them. At the end of the episode, Mercedes breaks things off with Puck.

Coach Sue is the head of the Cheerios, the McKinley high cheerleading group. She is often ruthless towards everyone, but seemingly more so towards her Cheerios. If someone complains, she usually says, "you think this is hard?" and then asks them to try something completely ridiculous. Sue has a dislike of Will and wants to bring him, and Glee Club, down.
