Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This famous TV Dad was an ordained minister, and continued to practice teaching the gospel for many years after the much-loved show in which he appeared was off the air. Who was this clergyman and actor?

Answer: Hugh Beaumont (Leave It To Beaver)

Beaumont held an M.S. in Theology and was ordained in 1946. He continued to both study and practice divinity until his death in 1982 while on a trip to Munich.
2. This famous 'Uncle' from this somewhat 'rural' sitcom of the Sixties was also a fully accredited oral surgeon in real life. Which uncle is it?

Answer: Edgar Buchanan (Uncle Joe, 'Petticoat Junction')

Buchanan was the Head of the Dentistry Department at University of Oregon at Eugene for 5 years during the 1930's. Ebsen was an actor and a dancer, Demarest came from Vaudeville and numerous movies, and Pyle was no uncle at all. He was the patriarch of the entire musical and comical Darling family on the 'Griffith' show. He finally played 'Uncle Jesse' on the 'Dukes of Hazzard'.
3. She worked as an oyster shucker and as a house painter before 'coming out' to L.A. for television. Who is this funny gal?

Answer: Ellen DeGeneres

Her show 'Ellen' showed the first Network (ABC) 'out of the closet' scenes in 1994. They were extremely tame compared to present genres of this {type;} nevertheless, the show did cause a small uproar at the time.
4. This frequent Academy Award emcee worked as both a bricklayer and a funeral home cosmetician before making it big in Tinseltown. Who is the correct emcee?

Answer: Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi also holds a Ph.D. in literature from NYU. Although TV is not her largest forte, she does stand out as one of the most flamboyant Oscar emcees. She also won an Oscar herself for her performance in 'Ghost' (1990).
5. He was a master of odd jobs, such so that he was fired from 17 of them in one year before landing a home on NBC's long-running 'Cheers'. Can you name him?

Answer: Woody Harrelson

He did everything from cleaning motel rooms to valet parking. He says his temper was his major downfall.
6. This former 'Taxi' star trained to be a hairdresser at the Wilfred Academy of Hair and Beauty Academy in NYC before snagging the role he played. Which cast member is he?

Answer: Danny DeVito

It's true, even though now DeVito is practically bald!
7. A rough and tumble guy all his life, this comedian and sitcom star was a semi-pro hockey player, earning as much as {$1,000} per week on the AA circuit. Who is he?

Answer: Denis Leary

It's hard to believe he could last more than one period out there on the ice without a cigarette, but Leary did (and still does) play whenever he gets a chance. Belushi plays as well, along with Mike Myers, Matthew Perry, Dana Carvey, Jason Priestly and (before he fell ill) Michael J. Fox. No one mentioned but Leary was ever paid to skate, however.
8. Which 'Friend' began her TV career as a spokesperson for Tampax, becoming the first person to say 'period' on television?

Answer: Courteney Cox-Arquette

Before that she was 'Dancing in the Dark' with Bruce Springsteen on {MTV;} Laura Innes portrays 'Dr. Kerry Weaver' on 'E.R.'
9. Which SNL cast member had jobs as a furniture mover and a department store Santa before permanently joining the show in 1986, remaining there for nine more years?

Answer: Kevin Nealon

Key terms are 'year joined' and 'permanently'. Farley would seem the natural choice due to his bulk, but not here. His years on the show also do not correspond. Kevin Nealon actually spent nine years on the {show;} he ties with Tim Meadows in being the longest tenured 'Not Ready for Prime Time Player'.
10. This miserly game show host and ex-'Wonder Years' science teacher received his law degree from Yale and wrote speeches for both Presidents Nixon and Ford. Who is he?

Answer: Ben Stein

An extremely intelligent man, Stein has passed the bar in three states and in The District of Columbia. His smugness and off the cuff intellectual humor has kept 'Win Ben Stein's Money' a top show on Comedy Central for several years now.
