When the comics debuted, Grandmama was Morticia's mother and was only one of three Addamses to have any spoken lines. Whenever Grandmama appears in future adaptations, she is always based on the personality of Grandmama from the original series/comics. In addition, her first name rarely is mentioned, often only appears in scripts and background information and frequently changes from adaptation to adaptation.

In the 1991 film, Grandmama is family's cook and, although she is Morticia's mother and not a servant, she very much acts like one at times. This is more apparent in the original script where deleted scenes featured her cleaning and fixing things around the house.

Her main role in the family is that of cook and she always experimenting with new recipes, ideas for which she gets from reading "Grey's Anatomy".

When the family visits Fester and Debbie to confront the latter over her treatment of Fester, Grandmama takes a skull and curses Debbie. Specifically, the curse ends with "burst and burn" which is the ultimate fate Debbie receives at the end of the film when she disintegrates after being electrocuted. It's the spirits of the deceased Addams ancestors who summon the storm (at Fester's request) to trap the families in the mansion so they can work out their issues rather than run away from them. Grandmama concocts the potion that, when drunk, will reveal a person's true dark nature. Pugsley steals this potion as he intends to slip it to Wednesday but Alice Beineke winds up drinking it by mistake.

Aunt Sloom, as she is referred to, is Grandmama's sister who is stern and unforgiving. Grandmama has a long running feud with her. Sloom is known for being very stern and judgmental, which makes Pugsley nervous since she is the one evaluating his mazurka.

Grandmama in this version is somewhat different than in her other appearances. She does not live in the Addams Mansion with the family like she normally does. Instead, she travels the world. In addition, she is overly critical toward her daughter-in-law Morticia and the way Morticia raises the children. In previous adaptations, Grandmama is never critical toward her child-in-law regardless if that was Morticia or Gomez.
