Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On television's "The Big Bang Theory", Sheldon Cooper is a Caltech theoretical physicist with an IQ of 187 who is inept in most social interactions, including sarcasm and humor amongst his few friends. When he feels he has succeeded in pulling off a joke, what word will he use as his "gotcha" catchphrase?

Answer: Bazinga!

Cooper is gloriously portrayed by Jim Parsons. Sheldon tends to expound on his many extraordinary accomplishments while he was still a child. Due to his undivided focus on all things scientific and intellectual, he has a total lack of social skills and an almost robotic lack of humility or empathy.

He is not above touting his superior intellect compared to those around him. His many faulted characteristics provide the fuel for his aloof, faltering mannerisms and character's humor.
2. In the 1994 romantic comedy "I.Q.", Albert Einstein helps an auto mechanic, Ed Waters-played by Tim Robbins, catch the eye and heart of his niece, Catherine Boyd-played by Meg Ryan. What Oscar winning actor played the part of genius Albert Einstein?

Answer: Walter Matthau

It is love at first sight when Catherine enters Ed's garage. The only problem is that Catherine is engaged to an uptight professor played by James Moreland, so she won't allow herself to acknowledge the attraction- even to herself. Fortunately, Catherine's uncle, who just happens to be Albert Einstein, likes Ed and with his friends they plot to help Catherine admit her feelings for Ed.
3. In the 2006 film "The Prestige", David Bowie plays a genius. Born in what is now Croatia, who was this Serbian-American inventor, physicist and electrical/mechanical engineer with a photographic memory?

Answer: Nikola Tesla

Without giving too much away in case you haven't seen this movie, Tesla invents a machine that is a plot "device" in more ways than one. There is no evidence, of course that such a thing ever existed. However, he actually did have a laboratory in Colorado Springs and the depiction of the banks of lights shown in the film were indeed a creation of his, powered by electrodynamic induction.
4. Which fictional pulp character originally from the '30s and '40s had the following on his C.V. (resumé): scientist, surgeon, explorer, inventor, physician, musician, researcher and adventurer?

Answer: Doc Savage

Known as The Man of Bronze, with his team The Fabulous Five, operating from the 86th floor of a New York skyscraper, they fought many villains. Doc Savage has spanned all media; pulp magazines, comics, radio, TV and film from the 1930s through 2009 and will probably continue, as long as there is an audience.
5. Which spoof film from 1984 concerned a very talented individual who was a neurosurgeon, physicist, rock musician and test pilot?

Answer: The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension!

A somewhat blatant nod to the Doc Savage stories from the '30s and '40s had Dr. Buckaroo Banzai and his team, The Hong Kong Cavaliers, fighting inter-dimensional aliens. Now regarded as a cult classic it stars; Peter Weller, John Lithgow, Ellen Barkin, Jeff Goldblum and Christopher Lloyd. All the films listed are real films from the 1980s.
6. In 1985, Kurt Vonnegut published a novel in which humans, over time, became aquatic animals instead. For what scientist, botanist, naturalist and geologist was this book written in partial tribute to?

Answer: Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin is the only one of the above who fits all four disciplines. His evolutionary theories were revolutionary during his time and are still discussed and studied today. Perhaps by "natural selection", Vonnegut chose the title "Galapagos" for his novel.
7. During his lifetime Napoleon Bonaparte was considered a military genius. He just had one "minor hiccup" which occurred in modern-day Belgium. Which popular group of the 1970s wrote a song with this location in the title?

Answer: ABBA

"Waterloo" was initially written as an entry for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974. It won and effectively launched ABBA's career. Unfortunately for Napoleon, the Battle of Waterloo effectively ended his. Although he was considered an "average" student in school, he was arguably one of the greatest military strategists of all time, conquering and creating an empire that encompassed most of central and western Europe.
8. What was the name of the conservative character played by Michael J. Fox in the television show "Family Ties"?

Answer: Alex P. Keaton

The part of Alex P. Keaton was originally meant for Matthew Broderick, but he was unavailable. The character was a young Republican and future ruthless businessman. Michael met his future wife Tracy Pollan on the set of the show.

The three wrong answers are all other character played by Michael. He played Marty McFly in the series of "Back to the Future" movies, Dr. Benjamin Stone in "Doc Hollywood" and Mike Flaherty in the TV show "Spin City".
9. This comic book super villain and genius made his first appearance in 1940 and has been a thorn in the side of the Man of Steel ever since. Who is it?

Answer: Lex Luthor

Lex Luthor originally was drawn with red hair, but after an artist's mistake, he was left bald and remained that way. His dislike of Superman began early in life, as they were first friends but when an accident in a teenage Luthor's lab leads to Superboy destroying the lab to put out the fire and chemicals causing Luthor to go bald, Luthor wanted revenge.

Luthor had undergone changes to become a more modern representation of evil, becoming a Corporate Magnate and in another reworking the President of the United States. He is an immortal villain of comic book lore.
10. What genius science-fiction writer wrote the story the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" was based on?

Answer: Arthur C. Clarke

Clarke is best known as a visionary and science-fiction writer of such classic novels as the aforementioned "2001: A Space Odyssey" and many others such as "Rendezvous with Rama". Clarke along with director Stanley Kubrick brought this amazing work to the big screen. Clark also wrote the short story "The Sentinel" off of which the movie was based.

Clarke also contributed to real life science applications like the use of geosynchronous satellites for communications. The honors Clarke earned in his time on this planet, from being born in Minehead, Somerset, England to his death 90 years later in Colombo, Sri Lanka, are too many and illustrious to list and worth looking into further.

Herman Potocnik was an Austro-Hungarian pioneer in rocket science who spent time figuring out how humans could live in space. In a work published in 1929 he laid the groundwork for geostationary satellite use for communications that Clarke would develop further into a working model.
