Answer: Buffy from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"

In the season finale of the fifth series of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", viewers were shocked to core by the unexpected death of the title character. The episode, entitled "The Gift", saw Buffy and the rest of the Scoobies battle hell-god, Glory, in an attempt to stop her from returning to her home dimension. For in order to go home, Glory needed to open the gate to various dimensions, and she needed the blood of Buffy's sister, Dawn, to do so. Despite a fierce battle, in which Glory was defeated, Dawn had already been cut, and her blood had sparked the opening of the gate. This would not stop until the blood ceased to flow, indicating that Dawn herself would have to die after all.

However Buffy had other ideas, and suddenly all of the previously meaningless "clues" from earlier episodes began to make sense. Through the use of a flashback, it became clear to viewers that Buffy would be able to take Dawn's place, and stop the gate from opening. Hurling herself off the top of the tower, Buffy sacrificed her life for the world and her sister, bringing an end to Armageddon. However, she did not stay dead long, and was resurrected in time for the beginning of the next season.

2. (Film) In my wildest dreams, I never imagined that a wager with my step-sister, Kathryn, would alter the course of my life completely. When it began, I was a callous, unscrupulous and cruel womanizer; any meeting with me had the potential to be a dangerous liaison. That is, until I fell in love with one of my conquests, a pure angel, called Annette. So in love was I, that I never thought twice about saving her from being mowed down by a taxi. But who am I?

Answer: Sebastian Valmont from "Cruel Intentions"

The 1999 film, "Cruel Intentions", is a modern adaptation of the French novel, "Les Liaisons Dangereuses", by Pierre de Laclos'. Centering on two wealthy teenagers, Kathryn Merteuil and Sebastian Valmont, (who also happen to be step-brother and step-sister), the plot focuses on a wager made between the two. For Kathryn challenges Sebastian to de-flower the angelic Annette Hargrove, and if he is successful, she (Kathryn) will offer herself up to him.

However the devious duo's plans go awry when Sebastian finds himself falling in love with Annette.

Despite winning the bet, Sebastian no longer has any interest in Kathryn, and only has eyes for Annette. A jealous Kathryn then tries to ruin the budding relationship, culminating in Annette being accidentally knocked into the path of an oncoming taxi. Sebastian saves her from being hit, but loses his own life in the process.

3. (Literature) Although I died many years before my son's series officially began, my tale was revisited regularly. With the help of dreams, flashbacks, word of mouth and memory, my story was passed on. I sacrificed myself in an attempt to save my son, hurting the dreaded "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" in the process. For my love protected my boy, causing "You-Know-Who's" killing curse to rebound, which nearly destroyed him. But who am I?

Answer: Lily Potter

Although the "Harry Potter" books began many years after the death of Lily Potter, (Harry's mother), her sacrifice is mentioned throughout the whole series. Refusing to save herself, and thus allow her son to die, Lily Potter blocked Voldemort's path to baby Harry.

She died as a direct result of this, but her love for her son left its mark on him, meaning that Voldemort could not touch him. Indeed when Voldemort directed the killing curse at baby Harry, it rebounded, ripping the former's soul from his body, nearly killing him.

4. (Television) Due to being dead, my body was not a life-giving machine, and after the shock of finding out I was pregnant, I tried everything to destroy the life growing inside of me. But no guardian angel answered my plea, although one did try to protect my son and me. In the end, however, it all lay in my hands. Against all odds, including centuries of inhumanity, I found that I loved my child. But my defunct body was slowly killing him. And so, for the first time in my life, I performed a selfless act. With one stab to the heart, I turned to dust, leaving a healthy baby boy behind, in the care of the one person in the world I could truly trust. Who am I?

Answer: Darla from "Angel"

In season three of the television series, "Angel", vampire, Darla, gave birth to a son in the most unusual fashion. After initially spending her time trying to kill the child growing inside her, she eventually admitted to Angel that for the first time in 400 years, she felt pure love. Of course the reason for this was that the child inside her was sharing its soul with Darla, enabling her to feel love for the first time since she became a vampire. Darla then begged Angel to protect the baby from her, as she knew that after the birth she would revert back to being a savage, soulless vessel, unable to remember the love she once felt for her son. Before this could happen, however, Darla became aware of the fact that her body was unable to nurture her baby, and was slowly killing him, leading her to make the ultimate sacrifice. Out of love for her child, Darla staked herself, so that her baby, Connor, would live.

5. (Film) I was a poor man, using only natural talent to keep me afloat, while she was an upper class beauty, with the world at her feet. We should never have met, but fate conspired to bring us together in a most dramatic fashion. The first time I saved her life, I received a frosty reception from her side of the fence. Yet she and I still went on to develop an everlasting bond. Unfortunately for me however, disaster struck, and I was forced to let her go rather earlier than I had expected. Still, I died after doing all I could to save my sweetheart, and make sure that her bloom was not extinguished. I left her floating on a board in rather wintry conditions. But who am I?

Answer: Jack Dawson from "Titanic"

The 1997 film, "Titanic", mixes fact with fiction, by fusing a fictional romantic storyline with the real life events of the 1912 sinking of the Titanic. In the film, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, play Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater, a couple who fall in love, despite belonging to different social classes.

Despite all her riches, and her upcoming marriage to "Cal" Hockley, (played by Billy Zane), Rose is desperately unhappy, and attempts to commit suicide by jumping overboard. She is, however, saved by Jack, a third-class passenger, who saw her climb onto the railings of the ship.

After saving Rose's life, Jack bumps into her more frequently, and they eventually begin a short-lived affair, which ends with Jack's death at the end of the film.

6. (Literature) A cruel mishap set the jaws of fate in motion, and t'was indeed a plague which brought about my demise, which in turn claimed the life of my lady. Though our houses were in conflict, twas a wayward letter which thwarted our plans. In the end, despite everything we had overcome, a simple illusion shattered my heart, and thus led me to hunt down a desperate apothecary. For I could not live without my lady, my wife, and in order to stay with her, I drank a deadly toxin, which did indeed end my life. Who am I?

Answer: Romeo Montague

William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" tells the tragic tale of two "star-cross'd lovers", who marry in secret, without the knowledge of their warring families. However when Romeo kills Tybalt, his wife's cousin, and is banished from his hometown, Verona, a chain of events is set in motion, which results in the tragic death of these two newlyweds. Following the death of her cousin, and the banishment of her husband, Juliet then discovers that her father, Capulet, intends to force her to marry the County Paris. Distraught, she enlists the help of Romeo's spiritual advisor, Friar Lawrence, who gives her a "distilled liquor drink" with the power to mimic death.

With Juliet "dead", Friar Lawrence sends a letter to Romeo, outlining his plan, explaining that when Juliet woke in her crypt, Romeo must take her away. However Romeo never received this letter, due to an outbreak of the plague, which delayed the friar in charge of delivering it. Therefore Romeo hears about Juliet's "death" before Friar Lawrence has a chance to explain the truth. Believing his wife to be truly dead, Romeo loses the will to live, and seeks out a poor apothecary, who gives him "a dram of poison". A distraught Romeo then makes his way to Juliet's tomb, and after slaying the County Paris, (who was also at the crypt, mourning Juliet), he drinks the poison and dies. Moments later, Friar Lawrence enters the tomb, and Juliet wakes from her drug-induced sleep. Fearful of the watch, Friar Lawrence begs Juliet to go with him, so that he can conceal her, but she refuses. The friar then runs away, leaving Juliet with her dead love, Romeo. Beside herself with grief, an impulsive Juliet grabs Romeo's dagger and stabs herself with it.

7. (Television) I was the first in a long line of witches, and a powerful witch in my own right. But like so many after me, I fell in love, only to be betrayed by a warlock in one of his guises. After this deception, he copied my powers, before revealing to all of Salem that I was a witch. Though I had the power to save myself, I was burnt at the stake, so that my precious daughter, Prudence, would never be subjected to the same fate. Who am I?

Answer: Melinda Warren from "Charmed"

Viewers were first introduced to Melinda Warren in the very first season of "Charmed", in the episode entitled, "The Witch is Back". Although Melinda had been mentioned in earlier episodes, this was the first time that she was seen in person. Back in the seventeenth century, Melinda was the first of her family to have powers, and was also responsible for the Charmed Ones' prophecy. Despite falling in love with Matthew Tate, who turned out to be a warlock and got Melinda burnt at the stake, Melinda cursed him into a locket before she died.

In the ninth episode of the first season of "Charmed" ("The Witch is Back"), Prue Halliwell inadvertently frees Matthew from the locket, forcing the sisters to bring Melinda to the present day, in order to help them curse him back into the locket. During this episode, Melinda revealed that she did not use her powers to escape death, in order to safeguard her daughter's future.

8. (Film) It took only a split second encounter with a mugger for my life to end. So intent was I on protecting my girlfriend, that I didn't even realise I had been shot. But suddenly she was crying, and I was looking down at myself. Life as I knew it had changed, and I was no longer a part of it. But then I discovered that the real world was not all it had seemed. As the plot thickened, I worried for the safety of my heartbroken girlfriend. No matter what, I could not leave until I knew she was safe. Who am I?

Answer: Sam from "Ghost"

The 1990 film, "Ghost", tells the story of a devoted man's quest to protect his girlfriend, from beyond the grave. After being fatally wounded during a mugging, (which turns out to be planned), Sam Wheat, (played by Patrick Swayze), becomes a ghost. As a ghost, he discovers that his death was no accident, and his girlfriend, Molly, (played by Demi Moore) is in danger. Vowing to protect her, Sam visits a psychic, in an attempt to communicate with Molly, who refuses to believe the woman at first. Nevertheless, the message does get through to Molly, and after some touching, as well as frightening scenes, Sam is free to move on.

9. (Literature) After an experiment with some Dream Topping went awry, threatening my daughter's life, along with the rest of the world, I finally realized my purpose in life. Oh, Aornis Hades was so sure she would have her revenge, but she was no match for my "several million years of existence". You see, I was not going to allow my daughter to die, so at the last moment, I took her place. I sacrificed myself for her, although technically, I died much later on. Who am I?

Answer: Colonel Next from "Lost in a Good Book"

In the second book of the Thursday Next series, "Lost in a Good Book", literary detective, Thursday, finds herself up against Aornis, sister of the deceased Acheron Hades, principal villain of the first book. As Aornis' brother died at the hands of Thursday, she vows to take her revenge, and tries everything to kill the latter.

As Aornis has the ability to alter entropy, she threatens to kill the world, using Dream Topping, unless Thursday takes her own life. However, Thursday's father, Colonel Next, a rogue member of the ChronoGuard, takes her place, dying in the process.

Although Colonel Next did die, due to his role as a time traveler, and his expert manipulation and understanding of time, he later returns. Although initially confused, Thursday eventually realizes that for her, her father died a short while ago, but for him, it would occur a great deal further in his timeline.

10. (Television) Although I feared the end of time, it was my time which ultimately came to an end. Unable to stop myself from protecting the human race, I expected to die battling a most masterful enemy. But fate conspired against me, even though the battle was eventually won. In the end an old soldier and a box sealed my fate. I died to prevent radiation from killing a most noble man. Who am I?

Answer: The Tenth Doctor from "Dr. Who"

The 2009 two part Christmas special of "Dr. Who" saw the death of the tenth doctor, as well as the re-introduction of the Time Lords. These episodes saw the Doctor and the Master pitted against one and other, as the Time Lords were brought back, threatening the rest of time in the process.

After receiving a message from the Ood, the Doctor expected to die, after hearing four knocks. In a cruel twist however, he survived the confrontation with both the Master and the Time Lords, only to discover that his temporary companion, Wilf, had been placed in a harmful position. Trapped in a sealed, radioactive environment, Wilf seemed destined to die.

However the Doctor refused to let this happen, and sacrificed himself to save his friend.
