Shirley Jackson is well known for her dark stories such as "The Lottery" and "The Haunting of Hill House". In "We Have Always Lived in the Castle", Jackson writes about sisters Merricat and Constance Blackwood and their uncle Julian. The three live in isolation because of the mysterious murders of a few family members via poisoned blackberries years prior. Constance was blamed for the crime but was acquitted.

As a result, the family is ostracized by the town and only Merricat goes out in public. Merricat is also a believer in magic and senses something awry is on its way with the sudden arrival of a distant, greedy cousin.
