Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Johnny Cage
Answer: 'Mortal Kombat' (video game series)
Johnny Cage is an American actor and one of the seven original playable 'Mortal Kombat' characters. His signature moves were the shadow uppercut and a high-speed kick. He entered the first tournament to prove that he could do his own stunts, and ended up being dragged into the war between realms.
He has appeared in most of the 'Mortal Kombat' games, and replaced Liu Kang as the main heroic character in 'Mortal Kombat X'. In the timeline of 'Mortal Kombat 9', he and Sonya Blade - another of the original cast - survived a massacre of the heroes, and later marred and had a daughter, Cassie Cage, who made her debut in 'Mortal Kombat X'.
2. Johnny 5
Answer: 'Short Circuit' (film)
Johnny 5 (voiced by Tim Blaney) is a robot developed by NOVA Laboratory, known as SAINT Unit 5. It becomes sentient when it is struck by lightning and its circuits get scrambled. Stephanie, an animal caregiver, finds the robot and helps it to learn to talk.
It learns about the concept of death when it squashes a grasshopper, and is frightened that NOVA are going to kill it. It outwits a group of SAINT robots by programming them to act like the Three Stooges, and fakes its own death by assembling a decoy Unit 5 out of spare parts.
It changes its name to Johnny 5 after hearing El DeBarge's 'Who's Johnny' playing on the radio in Stephanie's van.
3. Johnny Lightfoot
Answer: 'Sonic the Comic' (comic)
Johnny Lightfoot was a character from 'Sonic the Comic', a British comic published by Fleetway and featuring strips based on the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' series and other Sega games, such as 'Golden Axe', 'Kid Chameleon' and 'Ecco the Dolphin'. He was a rabbit, named after the biologist John Lightfoot, fought with a staff and was part of a group of freedom fighters, which also included Sonic, Tails, Amy Rose (to tie in with 'Sonic CD'), Knuckles the Echidna (after 'Sonic 3' came out), and original characters Porker Lewis, Ebony the Cat and Tekno the Canary.
He was the only heroic character to be killed off, electrocuted by Chaos late in the comic's run. Nigel Kitching, one of the comic's writers, stated that Johnny was 'dull' and had to be killed off for that reason.
4. Johnny C
Answer: 'Johnny the Homicidal Maniac' (comic)
The serial killer Johnny C, aka Nny, is the main character in Jhonen Vasquez's 'Johnny the Homicidal Maniac'. As the name suggests, much of the comic involves Johnny murdering people in various nasty ways; he is compelled to do so by psychological urges and supernatural forces, and paints his house in his victims' blood. He hates copycat killers and the word 'wacky'. He draws his own comic, 'Happy Noodle Boy', about an angry incoherent stick figure. Johnny befriends Todd Casil, aka Squee, a timid little boy who lives next door and features in his own spin-off series, and treats him as a surrogate brother.
The comic also features other strips such as 'Anne Gwish', a strip about a teen goth girl which makes fun of goth culture; 'Wobbly-Headed Bob', which features a depressed creature with a giant head; and 'Meanwhile...', which features various one-off stories.
5. Johnnie Carr
Answer: 'What Katy Did' (book)
Johnnie Carr - Joanna, to give her her proper name - is one of Katy Carr's younger sisters in Susan Coolidge's 'Katy' series. She is the fifth of the Carr children, and a tomboy, hence her boyish-sounding name. She is very close to her older brother Dorry, who loves machines.
The Carr children live with their father, a doctor, and their Aunt Izzie, who dies during 'What Katy Did' (in 'Katy', Jacqueline Wilson's 21st century update of the book, she is their stepmother). In 'What Katy Did at School', she and Elsie go to stay with Mrs Worrett, a family friend who lives at Conic Section, who gets it into her head that Johnnie loves chasing chickens after seeing Johnnie chasing her brother Phil's hen. Both Johnnie and Elsie are miserable and cannot wait to get home.
6. Johnny (no surname given)
Answer: 'The Room' (film)
The surnameless Johnny is the main character of the notoriously bad cult film 'The Room', played by Tommy Wiseau. He works in a bank and is engaged to Lisa, who is cheating on him with his friend Mark. He overhears Lisa talking about her affair to her mother and starts taping her phone calls. At a party, Lisa and Mark are caught together, and Johnny announces that he and Lisa are expecting a child, but Lisa reveals she was lying, and admits to the affair. Johnny has a mental breakdown and shoots himself in the head.
A 2017 film, 'The Disaster Artist' was made about the making of 'The Room' and was based on the book of the same name by Greg Sestero, who played Mark in 'The Room', and Tom Bissell.
7. Johnny Joestar
Answer: 'JoJo's Bizarre Adventure' (manga)
Johnny Joestar - not to be confused with Jonathan Joestar, the original JoJo - is the star of 'Steel Ball Run'. Each series of 'JoJo's Bizarre Adventure' features a different protagonist called JoJo, all of whom have 'Jo' in their first names and surnames, and are descended from the Joestar family. Johnny is the seventh JoJo, and a former jockey who has lost the use of his legs.
His Stand - a manifestation of his fighting spirit - is a cute little pink creature called 'Tusk' (after the Fleetwood Mac album of the same name; both Stands and characters in 'JoJo's Bizarre Adventure' are named after musicians, songs and albums). Tusk gives Johnny the ability to make his fingernails spin rapidly and act like drills.
8. Johnny Storm
Answer: 'The Fantastic Four' (comic/media franchise)
Comic fans will know Johnny Storm as the Human Torch; there was an earlier Marvel character with the same nickname, an android called Jim Hammond, and his name and powers were essentially repurposed for the Fantastic Four. Johnny Storm has the ability to fly and manipulate fire, and is the youngest and most impulsive of the Fantastic Four.
He is also the younger brother of Sue Richards née Storm, aka the Invisible Woman. His catchphrase is 'flame on!' He was temporarily killed off in the comics and replaced by Spider-Man, a close friend of his, but was later resurrected.
He was played by Chris Evans in the 2005 'Fantastic Four' film and its sequel, 'Rise of the Silver Surfer', and by Michael B Jordan in the 2015 'Fantastic Four' film.
9. Johnny Fiama
Answer: 'The Muppets' (TV show)
Johnny Fiama is a Muppet, played by Bill Barretta. He is an Italian-American Rat Pack-style crooner from New Jersey, with an angry monkey bodyguard called Sal Minella. His surname is an anagram of 'mafia', though 'fiamma' (correct spelling) means 'flame' in Italian. Johnny and Sal had their own segment on 'Muppets Tonight', a talk show called 'The Johnny Fiama Show'.
He is also a massive fan of Tony Bennett. Barretta based Johnny on his father and grandfather, and played a character of the same name in 'The Last Swing', a mockumentary.
10. Johnny Maxwell
Answer: 'Only You Can Save Mankind' (book)
Johnny Maxwell is the main character of Terry Pratchett's 'Johnny Maxwell' series, which is set in the fictional town of Blackbury and involves supernatural happenings. Johnny lives with his grandfather and spends his time hanging out with his friends Wobbler, a fat computer enthusiast; Bigmac, a wannabe skinhead; and Yo-Less, a black nerd and Morris dancing enthusiast (nicknamed because he doesn't say 'yo' or conform to any other stereotypes Johnny has of black people).
They are later joined by Kirsty, a child prodigy who Johnny encounters in 'Only You Can Save Mankind'. Johnny gets sucked into a pirate copy of a game called 'Only You Can Save Mankind' and finds himself trying to help the ScreeWee, a race of lizard-like aliens.
