Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He was a sidekick to a number of screen cowboys but he was most closely associated with Gene Autry. He was also a song-writer and could play over 100 instruments. His horse was named Ringeye. Who was he?

Answer: Smiley Burnette

Burnette was never west of Illinois or rode a horse until called to Hollywood along with his lifetime friend Gene Autry. Gene and Smiley made 64 movies together. Smiley appeared with several other western stars when Gene was away during WWII. Late in life he had minor parts in two popular TV sitcoms: "Petticoat Junction" (1963-1970) and "Green Acres" (1965-1971).
2. He spent much time in the company of Samuel Johnson who is given credit for the first English dictionary "Dictionary of the English Language" (1775). His biography "Life of Johnson" (1791) is considered a literary classic. What is his name?

Answer: James Boswell

In his personal life Boswell was a failed lawyer and womanizer, the latter causing him to contract gonorrhea seventeen times. He had a natural skill in writing and had a phenomenal memory. He kept notes about interactions and travels with Johnson and molded them into a biography that portrays the human side of that literary giant.
3. "Shrek" is an ogre who appears in a series of animated movies. Michael Myers voices Shrek, but who voices his sidekick Donkey?

Answer: Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy was the voice of Donkey but Puss-n-Boots, voiced by Antonio Banderas, is also a sidekick.
4. Wild Bill Elliot starred as Red Ryder in a series of western movies. His sidekick was an Indian boy named Little Beaver. What actor played this role?

Answer: Robert Blake

Blake went on the star in the movie "In Cold Blood"(1967) and the 1970s television series "Baretta" (1975-1978)
5. As Don Quixote goes on his quest for the impossible dream by tilting windmills, he is accompanied by his faithful servant. What is that character's name?

Answer: Sancho Panza

Sancho Panza from Cervantes' novel "Don Quixote"(1604?) is considered the prototype of sidekick characters. Panza is faithful and a steading influence on his master who is sinking into madness.
6. Joey Bishop once had a late-night talk show during the 1960s. Who was his sidekick on that program?

Answer: Regis Philbin

Bishop was a member of the noted "Rat Pack" and aired a talk show on ABC. The program suffered from poor ratings. Philbin tried to resign as he took too much responsibility for the lack of success. Some sources say that Philbin got tired as well about the teasing that Bishop constantly provided about him on air.

Although there is no accurate count, Philbin perhaps has spent more time in front of a live television camera than anyone else. Bishop walked off the program after making an announcement of his firing leaving Regis to host the rest of program.
7. Roy Rogers had several actors who portrayed his sidekicks during his career. Which one did not ride a horse but followed Roy around in his jeep?

Answer: Pat Brady

Brady did indeed follow Roy around in a jeep with Roy's dog Bullet generally running beside.
8. Sherlock Holmes had a roommate who also functioned as his investigative sidekick. What was his name?

Answer: Dr. Watson

Watson had many functions. At times he was a co-investigator, friend, foil, and biographer to Holmes.
9. The "Green Hornet" had many incarnations. The Hornet appeared in serials in the 1930s, comic books, radio, movies, and television. His sidekick was Kato, his chauffeur. What was used as theme song for the "Green Hornet"?

Answer: Flight of the Bumblebee

Kato seemed to have a different background in each of the Hornet versions. In the 1930s he was described as Japanese, but after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941 he became a Filipino. On the television series, Bruce Lee was one of the actors who played Kato.
10. Harry Potter starred in seven novels between 1997 and 2007. Harry was not without his sidekicks. One was Ron Weasley. Who was the other?

Answer: Hermione Granger

Hermione is Muggle-born. That is, neither of her parents are of the magic world, as Harry and Ron are, which feeds into a bias of the magic community. She is studious, a good researcher, but sometimes is not reliable at the beginning of a crisis.
