Plantations and farms were often very spread out and far away from each other. But in New England, most small towns consisted of houses and shops built around one large meeting house. Town meetings would be held in the meeting house, and were open to inhabitants of the town.

Both men and women could be indentured servants; people who worked for 5-7 years in turn for a passage to America. Sadly, many were worked so hard that they died before becoming free citizens.
