Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Tom's real name?

Answer: Lucinda Muriel

Tom's father, a vicar, wanted a boy, but as he had a daughter instead, he raised her like a boy and encouraged her to be a 'gentleman'. Although she was christened Lucinda Muriel after her grandmothers, her parents call her Tom at home, and the teachers do as well.

She is embarrassed to tell Bride Bettany her real name, but gives in when Bride notices her initials are 'LM Gay', and asks Bride to keep it a secret.
2. In a prep session, Anne Webster signals to Tom that she needs an eraser for her map. How does Tom react?

Answer: She says, "Oh, bunjy! Right you are!" and passes Anne an eraser.

Tom has a very strict code of honour and believes that girls are sneaky, sentimental and underhanded. When Anne makes signs at her to ask for an eraser, Tom speaks out loud rather than signing back, as she believes signing is a 'cad's trick' and an underhanded way of breaking rules. Daisy Venables, who is taking prep, hears her and tells both her and Anne off after Anne owns up.

The other girls in the class are angry with Tom for getting Anne into trouble, and Elfie Woodward points out that according to their code, there's nothing wrong with making signs if you need something, and that it's better to keep quiet and not put people off their work.
3. Daisy Venables and Miss Wilson write to Robin Humphries and Miss Annersley for advice about Tom, as her work and behaviour are deteriorating and in Daisy's case, Tom makes a point of being rude to her. What is the reason for Tom's grudge against Daisy?

Answer: She thinks Daisy reported her to Miss Linton.

Through the medium of several letters between characters, we discover that Tom isn't eating properly, her work is poorer than usual and she has been rude to Daisy on several occasions. Daisy can't understand why Tom is targeting her. The reason for this turns out to be that Miss Linton has made a very pointed comment about girls talking and making signs in prep and their work being mediocre as a result, and Tom assumes that Daisy told on her.

As Tom admired Daisy and thought she was a 'sport', she feels that Daisy has let her down.

She starts to question her own feelings when she reads one of Joey Maynard's adventure stories and notices that it's dedicated to Daisy, as Daisy doesn't seem like the kind of person to tell tales.
4. What happens when Tom, Daisy and Elfie walk back to the school in the snow?

Answer: Elfie sprains her ankle.

Daisy supervises a group of girls on a walk to her aunt Madge Russell's house, which includes Bride, Elfie and Tom. Madge warns them that they need to leave in a timely manner as snow is coming. While the other girls stay behind and wait for Jem Russell to give them a lift, Tom, Daisy and Elfie walk back to the school, but Elfie slips and sprains her ankle, and accidentally hurts Daisy as well by pulling on her arm. Elfie is in too much pain to walk, so Daisy has to carry her on her back, with Tom holding Elfie's leg up.

They get lost and are unable to find anyone at home on the way, but luckily Jem is driving past and gives them a lift back. Tom later confesses to Daisy that she thought Daisy had told Miss Linton about her, but Daisy explains to Tom that Miss Linton, being a former pupil herself and having a naughty little sister, is well aware of how girls behave in prep, and that she wouldn't report anyone over something so minor anyway.
5. Why does Tom volunteer to glue Nella Ozanne's dolls' house furniture together?

Answer: Nella fell out of her chair and banged her head.

Nella Ozanne is tilting her chair and bangs her head on the floor, and Claire Danvers, the prefect in charge, has to take her to Matron. Her twin sister Vanna is upset because Nella was making dolls' furniture and was supposed to be glueing it together at that night's Hobbies Club. Vanna can't do the job herself as she is too clumsy and she is also focusing on making some woollen reins. Tom has made a dolls' house and is working on a box, but decides to glue Nella's furniture together for her and sand it as well. Beth Chester, the Head Girl and the Ozanne twins' cousin, is impressed at the quality of the furniture.
6. What type of stuffed animal is Bride Bettany making in Hobbies Club?

Answer: Cat

Bride is making a pink stuffed toy cat, but is having trouble making it stand. Daisy helps her by giving her wire for the legs and pasteboard to act as bases for its feet. She also gets some cotton wool for stuffing. Bride has previously made a sitting blue rabbit and a squatting brown dog, but wanted to try making a standing stuffed animal.
7. Which of these members of staff does Tom NOT accidentally lock in a cupboard at night?

Answer: Miss Burn

Tom has trouble sleeping due to eating too much cake and hears noises. She goes out of her dormitory to investigate, sees a light coming out of the school stockroom and assumes it's burglars, and locks the door. Unfortunately, what she doesn't realise is that Matron, Miss Wilson, Mlle de Lachenais AND Madge are all in there, pricing goods for the sale. Miss Burn comes back from a visit to the Maynards, hears noises coming from the room and lets the staff members out, and Miss Wilson assumes one of the girls must have played a prank. Tom goes to her the next day to say that she heard burglars and locked them in the stockroom, and Miss Wilson narrowly avoids breaking out in laughter.

Instead, she tells Tom not to say anything and that the staff will deal with the problem.
8. Which book provides the theme for the Sale of Work?

Answer: Alice in Wonderland

The sale is based on 'Alice in Wonderland' and each stall has a theme based around the book. The Sixth forms have a handcrafts stall, based on the White Rabbit's House. The Upper Fifth's needlework stall is based on the seashore where Alice meets the Griffin and the Mock Turtle, and they use packing bases covered with brown cloth as rocks.

The Lower Fifth, who are selling produce such as cakes and jams, base their stall on the courtroom near the end of the book. The Fourth forms have a white elephant stall based on the Queen of Hearts' garden party, with various items wrapped up in paper balls.

The Third forms, which includes Tom's form, are selling toys and their stall is based on the Mad Hatter's tea party. The Second and First forms team up to create a rose garden for their stall, which is selling raffia and canework.

The Kindergarten have the lucky dip, which is based on the Old Sheep's Shop, and Miss Phipps runs the stall as the Old Sheep. Finally, the Special Sixth girls serve refreshments while dressed in period costume.
9. One of the competitions at the sale is a draw to choose the name of Tom's dolls' house. Which name wins?

Answer: Tomadit

'Tomadit' ('Tom made it') is Joey's idea, and the name Tom selects for her dolls' house. The house is the subject of a competition where entrants have to choose names from a list, and the winner is the person who chooses 'Tomadit'. Lady Erroll, a countess who opens the sale, takes a fancy to Tom and is impressed with her work, and wins the dolls' house.

She intends to give the house to the Sanatorium affiliated with the school, for younger patients to play with. Bride is happy as this was what Joey would have done if she'd won it, as the triplets already have their own dolls' house, La Maison des Poupées.
10. Which sisters are reunited with their parents at the end of the book?

Answer: Peggy and Bride Bettany

Mollie and Dick Bettany have been living in India for years with their two youngest children, Maeve and Maurice, and have only seen photos of them, so Mollie gets a shock when she sees how much her teenage daughters have grown. As Dick's great-uncle has left him a house in Devon, the Quadrant, the Bettany family will be settled in England and they will all be moving in together. Peggy and Bride also meet Maurice and Maeve for the first time, as do Jo and Madge, and Mollie talks Miss Wilson into letting the girls have the afternoon off so she and Dick can meet Bride's friends.
