Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While my home bookshelves may be well stocked, I don't seem to have a copy of "Middlemarch", so I need to go buy one. I'm easily distracted though (it's part of my charm). I enter the revolving doors of Behemoth & Noble, Booksellers. The first thing I see is a display of calendars for a year that won't start for many months. What calendar will I need to buy (eventually) since I live in the USA?

Answer: Gregorian

Humans have followed various calendars, but presently in the USA we're using one that's still pretty close to the Gregorian, which was invented to fix a few things that had cropped up with the Julian calendar, like spring arriving before everyone had finished their umbrella shopping.

The French Republic had its own calendar and an odd one it was too, with months called "Mist" and "Flower" and "Heat", among others. Personally, I prefer my NYC Firefighter calendar. ($14.99) (For a really fun discussion of calendars, visit http://www.sizes.com/time/index.htm and learn what AH and AM mean when used after a year. I did.)
2. You know, when I DO buy that book, I'll need to paste a bookplate into it so nobody steals it before I read it. I buy some bookplates ($4.50) that say "Ex Libris" on them. What does that mean?

Answer: From the books

There is probably a reason why I have these stuck onto the inside front cover of all my books. I think it's to deter guys with names like Tiberius and Marcellus from stealing my "Official Scrabble Word Finder".
3. On my way to "Fiction and Classics" (for "Middlemarch", remember?) I pass a display I cannot resist. They have stuffed "Arthur" dolls, and I have a nephew who looks like Arthur! My nephew looks like an...

Answer: Aardvark

(I hope my sister doesn't take this quiz.)
Marc Brown created Arthur the Aardvark. There are actually books about him in this store somewhere, but I bought the plush doll. ($14.95)
4. I'm going to need to send my sister a little apology note, so I'll need these dessert notecards by Ina Garten. By which nickname is Ms. Garten better known?

Answer: Barefoot Contessa

Ina Garten is the Barefoot Contessa, author of wonderful volumes kept over there in the cookbook section. Also recommended: Nigella Lawson as a Domestic Goddess and Julia Child as the French Chef.
(Who's George Eliot, anyway?)
(Dessert notecards, $12)
5. This is getting to be kind of a stressful shopping trip, so I pick up something by Rodney Yee. What would that be?

Answer: A yoga mat and video

Mr. Yee is one of the world's leading yogis. He's also a pleasure to watch on video when you get tired of staring at your NYC Firefighter calendar. (Like THAT will ever happen.)
(Yoga mat and video, $18.73)
6. What on earth and in the heavens am I buying now? (Besides "Middlemarch". I AM buying that.) Wands and chalices and swords and coins bedeck my purchase.

Answer: Tarot cards

The Rider-Waite deck is the most famous, but there are dozens of interpretations.
(Tarot cards, $18. Used to predict bankruptcy in my future.)
7. En route to Mary Ann Evans, I can't resist Hildegarde von Bingen. What am I buying now?

Answer: A CD of ecclesiastical plainchants

A truly remarkable woman, Hildegarde was a nun, composer, author, scientist, and healer. She should be far, far more famous than Britney.

(Hildegarde von Bingen CD, $17.98)
8. I've bought a lot of things thus far in my trip to the bookstore. I think I need a "palmier" now. What's that?

Answer: A pastry in the bookstore café

Yes, my bookstore includes a restaurant. Palmiers look sort of like hands. Really.
9. I never realized just how many periodicals my "book"store carries. If for some reason I'm ever hired to write a screenplay based on "Middlemarch" and have to move to California, what magazine had I better buy to get ready?

Answer: Sunset

It's predictably glossy, isn't it?
(Copy of "Sunset" magazine, $4.50)
10. I know there are books in here somewhere, but I don't think I have any money left. Except, of course, for the 20th anniversary edition of a certain board game. I HAVE to have THIS! (And so do you, or you wouldn't be at this site. So there.)

Answer: Trivial Pursuit

So here I am...I've spent $149.82 (plus tax) at Behemoth & Noble and not bought a single book. I AM going to read "Middlemarch" eventually...maybe it's available online?

I hope you have enjoyed this quiz, but if you haven't, please blame its inspiration, Gatsby722, who thinks the rest of mine are too difficult.
