Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1940 Walt Disney animated version of "Pinocchio," who was the wooden boy's companion and conscience?

Answer: Jiminy Cricket

Geppetto makes a little-boy puppet named Pinocchio (for the wood from which he is carved). He wishes it would become a real boy. The Blue Fairy grants his wish but the puppet will not become fully human until he can demonstrate exemplary human character. Because the puppet has no conscience, the Blue Fairy appoints Jiminy Cricket to serve that role.

The story was not new when Disney filmed it; it is based on a much older story "Le avventure di Pinocchio" by Carlo Collodi.
2. A Los Angeles Superior Court judge retires and teams up with an ex-con race-car driver to bring bad guys who got off on a technicality to justice. Milton C. "Hardcase" Hardcastle, played by Brian Keith, was the judge in this ABC TV series; who was the con?

Answer: "Skid" Mark McCormick

Daniel Hugh Kelly played Mark McCormick who was given the choice of returning to prison or working for the judge going after bad guys. The premise might have been silly but the ratings carried "Hardcastle and McCormick" three years (1983-1986). In the last episode, McCormick goes to law school.
3. In a series of movies beginning with "Clerks" (1994) and "Mallrats" (1995), Jason Mews ("Jay") plays opposite an unspeaking sidekick named __________.

Answer: Silent Bob

Kevin Smith, who also writes, directs and produces movies, comic books and TV programmes, plays "Silent Bob." Jay and Silent Bob have appeared in the following films: "Clerks", "Mallrats", "Chasing Amy", "Dogma", "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back", "Clerks II", "Jay & Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie", "Clerks III", "Moose Jaws", and "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot".
4. In Shakespeare's "The Tempest," Stephano plots to overthrow Prospero and become himself the ruler of the island on which they are shipwrecked and marooned. Who is his fellow drunken plotter and sidekick?

Answer: Trinculo

Trinculo is jester to King Alonso of Naples. He, like Stephano, drinks constantly. Trinculo hopes, by participating in Stephano's plot with Caliban to kill Duke Prospero, to become a viceroy of the island. Stephano and Trinculo's machinations are often comic in their ineptitude but stand for the depravity in men's hearts in this play.
5. Super Snooper and his partner appeared as shorts on the "Quick Draw McGraw" Show from 1959 to 1962. Who was Snooper's detective partner?

Answer: Blabber Mouse

Cats and mice are rarely paired as friends and coworkers but the pair of Super Snooper and Blabber Mouse worked well for Hanna-Barbera. Snooper was voiced by Daws Butler who drew upon the character Archie from the radio programme "Duffy's Tavern." Blabber, also voiced by Daws Butler, spoke with a lisp.

The cartoon aired in Portugal as "Olho-Vivo & Faro Fino" and in France as "Fouinard et Babillard" and in Germany as "Schnüffler und Plappermaul."
6. The star of ABC's "Fantasy Island" was Mister Roarke (played by Ricardo Montalbán) who was weirdly assisted by a diminutive sidekick with a French accent. Who was this bantam fellow?

Answer: Tattoo

In the original opening of the show, Tattoo (played by Hervé Villechaize) would race up a tower to announce the arrival of new guests by shouting "Ze plane! Ze plane!" His role on the show was somewhat mysterious, as was his relationship with Roarke.

The show ran 1977-1984 and returned 1988-89. Villechaize was dismissed from this cast for his disagreements with producers and his alleged harassment of females on set.
7. In the Dr. Seuss book "Fox in Socks," to whom is the Fox in Socks trying to teach his tongue twisters?

Answer: Mr. Knox

A big part of the amusement provided by this book is in the attempts of parents to master all of the tongue twisters while reading aloud to their children. Mr. Fox offers rhymes of increasing complexity as the book progresses. Mr. Knox has difficulty following along. You would, too, trying to describe a "muddle puddle tweetle poodle beetle noodle bottle paddle battle."
8. Mandrake the Magician is always accompanied by his faithful African companion. What is this loyal strong man's name?

Answer: Lothar

Mandrake the Magician first appeared in a daily newspaper strip in 1934. He was, from the beginning, accompanied by Lothar, Prince of the Seven Nations. Black heroes were rare in American comics pages of the 30s and 40s. Lothar wore short pants, a leopard skin shirt and a fez and was "the strongest man in the world." The strip ended in 2013 but continues in reprints in some newspapers.
9. In the original (1960s) Hanna-Barbera animated TV show "Birdman and the Galaxy Trio," who was Birdman's sidekick?

Answer: Avenger

In the first iteration, Birdman was Raymond "Ray" Randall, a fellow who was able to fly, deriving his power from Ra and the sun's rays. He was accompanied by an eagle named Avenger. He later appeared in "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" and later still as "Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law."
10. Jack Benny had a valet on his radio show "The Jack Benny Program." The valet was played by the first African-American to have a regular role on a national network show. Who was he?

Answer: Eddie "Rochester" Anderson

The character's actual name on the series was Rochester van Jones but he was known universally as Rochester. Anderson (1905-1977) carried his role over to television with the Benny ensemble (1950-1965). In addition to his work as an actor and comedian, Anderson owned and trained several race horses.
