Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For the first three seasons of the CBS-TV series M*A*S*H, who was Dr. Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce's sidekick and partner in crime?

Answer: "Trapper" John McIntire

Based on the 1968 novel by Richard Hooker and the 1970 motion picture, the TV series "M*A*S*H" depicted the chaotic life of the doctors, nurses and staff of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital deployed in South Korea during the Korean War. Against Alan Alda's portrayal of Hawkeye Pierce, William Wayne McMillan Rogers III (1933-2105) played "Trapper John," another of the surgeons. Rogers auditioned for the part of Hawkeye but lost out to Alda. Rogers, who normally spoke with a strong Alabama accent, had to suppress it for the role.
2. In the British novels and movies, who was the Lone Wolf's sidekick and butler?

Answer: Jamison (or Jameson)

Michael Lanyard was a fictional jewel thief who went straight and became a private investigator on the right side of the law. In the novels written by Louis Joseph Vance (1879-1933) and the many films based on them (1917-1949), The Lone Wolf's accomplice was also his butler Jamison (or sometimes Jameson), played by Eric Blore.

The stories were also adapted briefly for radio (1948) and television (1954-1955).
3. Truck-driver Bo "Bandit" Darville (Burt Reynolds) is hired to smuggle Coors Beer from Texas to Georgia in "Smokey and the Bandit" (1977). Who is his sidekick, who actually drives the truck with the beer?

Answer: Cledus "Snowman" Snow

Coors Beer was unavailable in Atlanta but Bandit and his pal Cledus "Snowman" Snow (Jerry Reed) agreed to move 400 cases of it for a large fee. They are pursued by Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason) and his son Junior Justice (Mike Henry). This silly movie outsold every film released in 1977 except "Star Wars."
4. In the Old Testament Apocryphal Book of Tobit, Tobias sets out on a journey with someone he believes to be his father's kinsman Azariah. Who is his companion actually?

Answer: The Archangel Raphael

The Book of Tobit is one of those books not included in the Old Testament but preserved by some Christian churches as useful for instruction. It would be fair to call the Book of Tobit a novella, had that form existed in the 2d Century BC. It tells a fascinating and adventuresome story which ends happily, thanks to the intervention of the archangel.
5. In the numerous iterations of the Great Dane Scooby Doo, who is his owner, master, companion and friend?

Answer: Norville "Shaggy" Rogers

It is difficult to say who is whose sidekick, as between Scooby Doo and Shaggy. Both are cowardly. Both are more motivated toward eating than catching bad guys. A trope is found in the many scenes where they try to hide behind one another simultaneously. Since 1969, these pals have entertained, along with Fred, Velma and Daphne, setting out to solve mysteries in "Mystery Machine" van. Scooby's name is a reference to Frank Sinatra's scat in "Strangers in the Night." When Buffy the Vampire Slayer and her pals Xander, Willow, Rupert and Cordelia would refer to themselves as "the Scoobies," this was a reference to this Hanna-Barbera series.
6. In the 1950s American TV series, who was the Pawnee American Indian who was the sidekick of Yancy Derringer in postbellum New Orleans?

Answer: Pahoo-Ka-Ta-Wah

Derringer was an aristocratic Southerner who returned to New Orleans and became involved in other people's trouble. His silent companion was a Pawnee Indian who did not speak except through manual sign. Pahoo-Ka-Ta-Wah carried a sawed-off shotgun under his robe and a throwing knife sheathed to his back.

He was played by Jay X. Brands (1927-2000), a German-American who specialized in Native American roles. His name means "wolf who stands in water."
7. In the original 38-volume "Tom Swift" adventure series (1910-1941), who was Tom's close friend and companion on most of his adventures?

Answer: Ned Newton

Tom is the son of inventor Barton Swift. He inherited his father's gift for invention and his latest invention (which normally figures in the book's title) is involved in the novel's plot. The books were written by a series of ghostwriters, all under the nom de plume Victor Appleton. There have been four more series since the original.
8. Red Ryder, fictional hero of the American West, had a young Native-American sidekick named _______.

Answer: Little Beaver

Red Ryder was created by Stephen Slesinger and Fred Harman as a newspaper comic strip which ran from 1938-1964. It appeared also in comic books, a radio serial, television, motion-picture serials, and movies. Red Ryder lived at the Painted Valley Ranch with his aunt Duchess and his Navajo sidekick Little Beaver.

The Daisy Red Ryder BB Gun was licensed by the franchise and figured in the play/movie "A Christmas Story" by Jean Shepherd. The Pidgin English spoken by Little Beaver, similar to that spoken by Tonto in early "Lone Ranger" products, is now thought by many to be offensive.
9. The first animated series produced for American television was "Crusader Rabbit." Who was Crusader's companion and sidekick in his adventures?

Answer: Ragland T. Tiger

"Crusader Rabbit" was test marketed in 1948 and broadcast in 1949. The series went to syndication with 195 episodes. The rabbit's sidekick was Ragland T. Tiger; the "T" stood for "the." Crusader and Rags often battled Dudley Nightshade and his evil sidekick Bilious Green.
10. Shrek, the ogre, has a four-footed sidekick who cannot stop talking (or singing). Who is it?

Answer: Donkey

While Shrek was slow to warm to Donkey (because he wouldn't shut up), the Eddie Murphy character turns out to be the most faithful of sidekicks in the Shrek movies. Donkey even elevates Shrek's self-image and attitude, which is a lot for a loquacious equine to do.
