Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In medieval life, a highborn female who served the queen was known as a ______________

Answer: lady in waiting

These ladies were far above the rank of servant. It was an honor to be so closely associated with the queen.
2. Poet e. e. cummings' only well-known prose work is

Answer: The Enormous Room

"The Enormous Room" was Cummings' account of his time in a French prison camp in W. W. I. "Focus" was Arthur Miller's only novel. "Fidelio" was Beethoven's only opera. "The Bell Jar" was a novel by poet Sylvia Plath.
3. Anthony Minghella directed this movie that won the Oscar for Best Picture.

Answer: The English Patient

I thought "Patient" was excellent, but Elaine Benes thought it sucked! Sam Mendes directed Oscar winner "American Beauty". James "King of the World" Cameron directed undeserving Oscar winner "Titanic". James Brooks helmed "As Good as It Gets", for which Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt were deserving winners of lead acting Oscars, but their movie, which did deserve an Oscar, got sunk by that big tub called . . . What was the name of that boat again?
4. Which Bernard Malamud novel concerns an Italian-American named Frank Alpine who goes to work for a Jewish grocer and falls in love with the man's daughter?

Answer: The Assistant

"The Natural" and "A New Life" are both Malamud novels, but I made up "Rebecca and Frank".
5. The word "cathedral" comes from a Latin wording meaning what?

Answer: chair

The cathedral is therefore the headquarters or "seat of power" of the local archbishop.
6. What elite military group is seen early in the movie "A Few Good Men"?

Answer: the U.S. Marine Corps drill team

The pride, dedication, and skill of the marines are showcased. Semper fi!
7. Krypton is a noble ____________. Nothing to do with Superman.

Answer: gas

The other noble gases are neon, argon, radon, helium, and xenon, and exxon, right? Nope, forget that one. Sorry.
8. Ken Follett wrote this suspense novel.

Answer: Eye of the Needle

The "Needle" is a Nazi agent sent on a secret mission against England. "The Odessa File" is by Frederick Forsythe, "The Osterman Weekend" by Robert Ludlum, and "Red Storm Rising" by Tom Clancy.
9. Complete this old-time TV commercial dialogue: First Retired Jock: "Tastes great!" Second Retired Jock: "Less __________".

Answer: filling

Those Lite Beer from Miller spots gave lots of ex-athletes a new income.
10. Which of these plays is by Arthur Miller?

Answer: A View from the Bridge

"A View from the Bridge" is a drama of Italian immigrants in NYC. "Orpheus Descending" is by Tennessee Williams, "The Hairy Ape" by Eugene O'Neill, and "High Tor" by Maxwell Anderson.
11. Who recorded "Down Under"?

Answer: Men at Work

Possibly the only hit song to mention Vegemite.
12. A segment of the old "Late Night with David Letterman" on NBC had audience members telling about the time they met famous people; then the words "Writer's Embellishment" would flash on the screen and the person would add some absurd, hilarious events to the story. This segment was called "_________ with Greatness".

Answer: Brush

The audience members were always telling true stories, but there would be nothing funny about them until the "embellishment", which was aways hilarious. One of the many great things about the old show that Dave can't use any more. Shame.
13. Which of these is a George Eliot novel?

Answer: The Mill on the Floss

"The Castle of Otranto" is a gothic novel by Horace Walpole. "The Modern Prometheus" is the sub-title of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein". "Wuthering Heights" is by Emily Bronte.
14. What early "Saturday Night Live" character was always being tortured and tormented by Sluggo?

Answer: Mr. Bill

The hilarious Mr. Bill films had a claymation man named Mr. Bill whose archenemy Sluggo would brutalize and mutilate the poor little guy in short order. "Ohhhh, nooooooo!"
15. Okay, so, as I was saying, what do all these answers have in common, for Pete's sake? It's a job title, and please don't use an article, just one word.

Answer: dentist

Yes, it's all about our friend the dentist. Now to do a professorjon: When you go to the dentist, you'll probably have to spend some time in the waiting room (q 1, 2); you're the patient (3); the trusty assistant (4) will be on hand; you'll sit in the chair (5) and look nervously at the drill (6); the dentist may use gas (7) or a needle (8); you may get a filling (9) or some bridge work (10,11); the dentist may tell you to brush (12) and floss (13); and of course, inevitably, you will get the bill (14). Well, now! Hope you enjoyed my first commons quiz, and if the reaction is good enough I will do more. Thanks again to professorjon.
