Andromeda, at approximately 2.5 million light years away, is the nearest galaxy to Earth outside of our own Milky Way. Andromeda was first observed in the year 964 by Persian astronomer Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi. The designation Messier 31 comes from a French astronomer named Charles Messier, who in his search for comets, assigned numbers to objects he had observed that were not considered to be comets. Andromeda is found in the constellation of the same name and it is expected to collide with the Milky Way in about 4.5 billion years.
