The Borders have had a long and interesting history with England. Indeed there has been so much changes of rule in the border area that the people on this side of the border have most in common with the people on the other side of the border!

Although the border between England and Scotland passes Dumfriesshire, it is not part of the Scottish Borders, instead forming part of Dumfries and Galloway, which covers the old counties of Dumfriesshire, Kircudbrightshire and Wigtownshire.
Berwickshire is a Scottish Border county, even though Berwick is an English town and has been for centuries. Berwick had been the county town, but since its loss to England, Greenlaw, Lauder and Duns have each acted as county town at various times.
