Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The city of Vaitape is found on which island group, part of the Society Islands in the South Pacific?

Answer: Bora Bora

Known for its high-end luxury resorts, the islands and lagoon of Bora Bora are surrounded by a reef and take up a minuscule thirty square kilometres in the South Pacific. With resorts and residences built around an extinct volcano, Bora Bora is known for sun and warm climates and is one of the most famous destinations in all of French Polynesia (along with Tahiti). Bora Bora is so remote that you would need to travel nearly six thousand killometers west to get to the nearest continent (that's to Brisbane, Australia); it's eight thousand in the other direction (to Lima, Peru).
2. Mount Hutt overlooks which of these regions on the South Island of New Zealand?

Answer: Canterbury Plains

Te Waipounamu, the South Island of New Zealand, is an outdoor wonderland. From north to south, the island is spined by the Southern Alps on its west side. The east side, at least the central portion, is home to the Canterbury Plains, just south of Christchurch.

The picturesque Canterbury Plains are dual purpose. Besides the heavy tourism intake, the plains also serve as the agricultural hub for the country. Mount Hutt sitting on the edge of the plains, tops off over two kilometers above sea level and is one of the country's premier ski resorts. Mount Cook, the country's tallest peak, is nearly double the height.
3. The Ubud Monkey Forest, also known as Mandala Suci Wenara Wana, is found on which Indonesian island?

Answer: Bali

To visit the Ubud Monkey Forest you would need to take a trip to the beautiful island of Bali, known for its natural beauty and cultural and religious touchstones. These forests are specifically known for being the main home of more than a thousand Balinese long-tailed monkeys, a good number of whom are used to the normalized tourists that frequent the area.

The forests here are found in the village of Padangtegal in the central region of the island.
4. What Vietnamese city, home to the Confucian Temple of Literature, was originally a settlement on the Red River?

Answer: Hanoi

Vietnam's capital city, Hanoi sits in the north side of the nation (while Ho Chi Minh is in the south). One of the nation's historical Imperial Capitals (before it shifted southward), it has since grown to become a peaceful city of monuments, lakes, temples, and busy streets.

The Temple of Literature is found south of the Imperial Citadel in Hanoi's core. The complex was constructed in the eleventh century, but that date doesn't seem so far back when you consider that the Hanoi region has been occupied for more than five thousand years.
5. The Makgadikgadi Pans of Botswana sit in the middle of what desert?

Answer: Kalahari

Formerly the site of a massive lake spanning a stretch of land that would equal the size of Switzerland, the Makgadikgadi Pans were once fertile, lush, and rich in endemic species who, since, have grazed in the nearby Okavango Delta. The region is relatively inhospitable at the best of times. With only salt water where any water exists and horrible heat, it's not a place most people in Botswana would reside.

The Kalahari, which surrounds it, is named as such because the word 'Kalahari' translates to 'a waterless place'.
6. Depicted is what Swiss peak found in the Bernese Oberland?

Answer: Eiger

Reaching nearly four kilometers of elevation, the Eiger stands around the Central Swiss towns of Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen and acts as one of the largest glacial regions of Switzerland. The mountain's north face, the Eigerwand, is a near sheer cliff and is known for being one of the toughest ascents in the world.

It was first fully climbed in three days in 1938 (though it wasn't the first attempt). In modern times, it takes a few hours for expert, skilled climbers.
7. This nighttime image depicts the skyline of what European capital on the River Spree?

Answer: Berlin

Characterized by the Fernsehturm Berlin (the Berlin TV Tower) in this shot, this national capital is the largest city in Germany. The River Spree, which flows through Berlin, reaches as far west as the Czech Republic; in the opposite direction it becomes the Elbe before joining the North Sea.

Historically, the borders of Berlin have been fraught with tension and strife. After World War II, Berlin was split into West Berlin and East Berlin by the Berlin Wall. The wall came down (for the most part) in 1989, symbolizing reunification.

It has since grown to be one of the most important cities in the European Union.
8. The Firth of Forth is commonly associated with what United Kingdom city?

Answer: Edinburgh

Essentially the 'river of the fjord', the Firth of Forth cuts into the eastern side of Scotland and serves as a drainage basin for the central and southeast regions of the country. Amongst the settlements on its shores is the capital city of Edinburgh, the second-largest city of Scotland.

The image here depicts the Forth Bridge over the River Forth. Further upstream from here, the river heads onward to Loch Ard, part of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.
9. Peatlands Park can be visited in County Armagh, part of which country?

Answer: Northern Ireland

Peatlands Park is a stretch of protected bogland in Northern Ireland and one of the many wetlands in the nation. To get there you'd need to travel out of Belfast to County Armagh, one of Northern Ireland's six counties. Known for its orchards and green, rural countrysides, this region rests on Lough Neagh.

The city of Armagh proper has a history dating back to pre-medieval pagan roots, and it's because of this that it's one of the smallest official cities anywhere on the isles of the United Kingdom.
10. Mount Vernon, George Washington's plantation house, can be found on the banks of what river?

Answer: Potomac

Found on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, Mount Vernon was the home resided in by George Washington for a portion of his life. Built by his father on the Potomac River (which also runs through Washington D.C.), Mount Vernon now acts as a museum and the site of the Washington family tomb. Though the name may evoke the idea of a hillside, Mount Vernon isn't on a significant peak.

In fact, Fairfax County and the outer D.C. area doesn't get higher than rolling hills as they make their way closer to the coast. Fairfax County is considered one of the richest counties in the United States.
