Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Salt and
Answer: Vinegar
Salt and Vinegar crisps were first made in Ireland in the 1950s by the Tayto crisp company. They were also the first to manufacture Cheese and Onion flavour.
2. Prosecco and
Answer: Elderberry
Supermarket chain Tesco launched this flavour in 2015 as part of their up- market "finest" range of products. They were described as fizzy, sweet crisps with an aroma of elderberry. Not to be outdone, Marks and Spencer brought out crisps in a Winter Berries and Prosecco flavour.
3. Turkey and
Answer: Maple Syrup
As a Christmas accompaniment to their prosecco flavoured crisps, Marks and Spencer brought out this flavour, leaving many consumers asking "why?" Turkey is ok, and maple syrup is fine, but together..? Many reviews noted that although the crisps had a slight turkey aroma, the overwhelming taste was maple syrup and in a crisp it wasn't pleasant.
They did receive good marks for texture and crunch though.
4. Gin and
Answer: Tonic
Budget supermarket Aldi started the ball rolling with this flavour which met with disappointing reviews as consumers noted there was no real taste of gin or tonic, just lime. Other supermarkets followed with Morrison's making a Gin and Tonic with a Twist of Lime flavour leading to a County Durham police officer calling the stores irresponsible for sending out the wrong message to children.
He later tried to clarify his statement after being deluged with correspondence requesting he ban wine gums and beer battered fish.
5. Smoked Pheasant and
Answer: Wild Mushroom
These upper class crisps were made by the Taste of Game company and other flavours in the range included Wild Duck and Plum Sauce, Wild Boar and Apple and Grouse and Whinberry. Personally I have no idea what a whinberry is, let alone how it tastes.
6. Butter and
Answer: Mint
Tyrell's crisps were the company that brought us this flavour in 2015. Although a crisp tasting of butter doesn't sound good to me, reviews were excellent with consumers praising the texture, crunch and subtle flavour. Tyrell's also produce flavours such as Black Truffle and Sea Salt as well as Sour Cream and Serenade Chilli.
7. Worcestershire Sauce and
Answer: Sundried Tomato
Another flavour from Tyrell's crisps, described as "A spirited fusion of sweet yet tangy sundried tomatoes with England's finest export - the universally admired Worcester sauce." Once again to my surprise, a flavour that gained good reviews, with the only repeated complaint seeming to be that there was not enough of the Worcestershire sauce flavouring.
Thanks to tyrellcrisps.co.uk for the quote.
8. Haggis and
Answer: Cracked Black Pepper
Mackies of Scotland are, unsurprisingly, the manufacturer of this flavour and they also produce a Whisky and Haggis flavoured crisp too. Consumers have praised this crisp's "deep, delicious and unusual flavour."
9. White Stilton and
Answer: Cranberry Relish
A Christmas offering from the Kettle Chips company, these attracted some excellent reviews for not being bland or subtle. Described by many as "full on Stilton flavour" accompanied by a sharp tang of cranberry, with others recommending them as a pairing for red wine.
10. Roast Beef and
Answer: Spitfire Ale
Take two well respected local companies and combine their products and voila, you end up with this award winning crisp. Kent Crisps provided the crisps, and Shepherd Neame brewery, also based in Kent, provided their Spitfire ale. The crisps went on to win a Great Taste Award at the Food Producer of the Year show.
