Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which kind of local establishment was undergoing renovations at the start of the book?

Answer: Hotel

It was the decades-long closed Rio Roca Fria Hotel, that sat at the intersection of Davy Highway and Witch Light Road. A bunch of trucks rolled into town carrying supplies, and Manfred noticed a woman (Eva Culhane) who appeared to be in charge getting out of a Lexus. They began removing the boards from the hotel's doors and windows. Manfred narrated that it reminded him of "a giant boot kicking a dormant anthill".

The former name of the hotel translates into Cold River Rock Hotel. It reopened as Midnight Hotel, and catered to old folks "waiting" to get a permanent placement elsewhere, long term visitors, and had a few rooms left for short stays as well.
2. Which Texas city did Manfred travel to, to do private readings, where he also ran into his fellow Midnighter Olivia?

Answer: Dallas

It was five months after the beginning of the book, when everyone found out the local hotel would be reopened. He'd booked several private readings, so he checked into a fancier hotel than he normally would. He spotted Olivia as he was checking in, but she indicated silently that she did not want any obvious recognition from him. So, he said nothing, but spotted her later inside the hotel dining room.

She was eating with two other people, who later died. The next day she talked with him briefly before going about her business. Manfred was now even more confused as to why Olivia's job left her frequently battered and bruised, and suspected she had killed the couple with whom she'd dined.
3. While Manfred was reading a long time customer named Rachel Goldthorpe, she died right in front of him.

Answer: True

Rachel was in her sixties, and he hadn't seen her since moving to Midnight. Her husband Morton had died about a year earlier, and she liked to communicate with him through Manfred. Manfred enjoyed the ease at which Morton was able to "come through", and liked Rachel as well. Rachel was worried about their third (and youngest) child Lewis, who had been obsessed with her money as of late. Morton came through very fast and took Rachel's spirit away with him.
4. A young boy named Diederik was dropped off in Midnight by his father, a large mysterious bald man. Who was the rapidly growing child staying with while in town?

Answer: Rev

No one knew who the man was, but they did know he was the boy's father. Diederik appeared to be about four years old when he first arrived, but several days later had already grown to the size of a teen boy. He had purple eyes and a special quality, and said he felt like there were two beings living inside him.

The Midnight townsfolk liked the boy and helped him out with clothes as he continually outgrew them overnight.
5. In book one, Fiji met a bouncer named Travis McNamara at the Cartoon Saloon. In this book, she was dating him. She told Manfred and Olivia that he was a bouncer on the weekends, but was what during the weekdays?

Answer: An EMT

Everyone seemed to know Fiji was interested in Bobo, and she'd waited on him to notice it. She'd been waiting before and after the death of his girlfriend from book one. She took a call from her new boyfriend while Manfred and Olivia were at her house. They planned a date for the next evening, and Fiji filled them on how it was going with Travis. It was Manfred who told Bobo that Fiji needed a companion, and Bobo thought of Travis as "too rough" for Fiji. It turned out Fiji hated her second real date with Travis, and explained to Manfred they had nothing in common.

A soil conservationist is a real job. A person in this field consults and advises on how to use specific types of land areas, and how to prevent problems like erosion. A farrier is a person who takes care of hooves for a living.
6. Joe and Chuy, proprietors of the Antique Gallery & Nail Salon, could see ghosts.

Answer: True

In the first book, "Midnight Crossroad", we didn't learn much in the way of what kind of extra (or non) human powers the citizens of Midnight might have. Midnight, Texas (population 261) was super mysterious, much like Bon Temps in the "Southern Vampire Series". Manfred had come to town after spending time in the world of corpse finder Harper Connelly, and as a newbie, we saw the town through his eyes.

This time around we found out a world of new stuff. We knew Lem was a rare kind of vampire who could take blood or energy from people to survive. But, we did not know that Joe and Chuy could see dead people until midway through this book.

In Joe's narration, we could gather they were also very old, despite looking like young men. When Manfred asked Joe to accompany him and Olivia back to Dallas with some senior citizens, Joe flatly refused.

He said he couldn't spend time with old people. Later on in the book, Fiji speculated that they were probably angels. Since Joe could unfurl wings and fly, and shared a glimpse of a thousands year old memory, I'd say I agree with her.
7. Which of these people did *not* accompany Manfred and Olivia back to Dallas in order to find out the location of the Goldthorpe jewels?

Answer: Shorty

I never did get a last name for Suzie or Mamie, part of the senior citizen foursome scooped up from Las Vegas by Eva Culhane. Mamie "the knitter" was going to come along on the adventure, but the morning of the outing her hip was hurting too badly to endure the car ride to Dallas. Shorty Horowitz was the grandfather of "Rick", who turned out to be Barry the bellboy from the Sookie Stackhouse world of the "Southern Vampire Series". Manfred and Olivia needed the older people to help with a ruse to bypass Lewis Goldthorpe and find the jewels he'd accused Manfred of taking off of Rachel after she died. Shorty was suffering from dementia and was not a candidate for the excursion, but Barry the telepath was free. All of the people helping negotiated a fee from Olivia.

The whole "Manfred stole my mom's jewels" issue had became a media nightmare, bringing unwanted attention to Midnight, and the Rev needed a stop put to it, for many reasons. Shorty's dementia also caused unwanted attention to Barry, who was continuously on the run from vampires. Anyone who's read the Sookie books would know why.
8. Inside which item were the Goldthorpe jewels hidden?

Answer: Globe

When Rachel's spirit came through Manfred during the seance, she said the jewels were in Morton's study. Then she trailed off with "I can see the world" and was gone for good. I instantly thought "oh, they're inside a globe". Sure enough, when Olivia was able to get back inside the house (with Barry and the seniors' help) she saw the globe.

She recognized it as a special kind of safe, so if you spun the globe around, the object hidden inside would make no sound. Manfred's lawyer agreed to have one of her shadier clients make an anonymous phone call to the Bonnet Park police to direct them on where to look.

They found the jewels and Manfred was cleared, but they also revealed Rachel had been murdered.
9. Who was killed by Diederik, in his were-tiger form?

Answer: Bertha the maid

Diederik had his first change/shift during the first night of the full moon. There are three nights of a full moon cycle, and apparently the final night was the one where shifters had the hardest time controlling their impulses. Since Diederik was so young, he had a harder time of it. So, when Lewis came to Midnight to harass Manfred (thanks to Olivia), Bertha the maid followed him there (also thanks to Olivia). Manfred snatched Lewis out of harm's way, but Bertha wasn't as lucky. Diederik killed her.

His father Quinn, who first appeared in the universe of Sookie Stackhouse, was back in town and in his tiger form wouldn't allow Diederik to eat Bertha. Her body was taken away before Olivia could dispose of it.
10. Alongside Diederik and Quinn, was the Rev also a were-tiger?

Answer: Yes

Quinn thought he was the last of his kind, until he met Diederik's mother. She died after giving birth, and Quinn needed someone to help with Diederik while he had a job to finish. He found out about the Rev, and was grateful that another tiger existed. The Rev used the pet cemetery to hide the bodies of people accidentally killed, or those who'd needed to be killed (in book one Lem had to kill Connor Lovell). Rev thought he was the only tiger left as well, until Quinn showed up in town. Quinn told Fiji that Diederik would need to stay in Midnight and be trained by the Rev while he finished up some jobs. But, someone else would need to house the boy, as the Rev's place was just not a good home for someone so young.

Now that Barry and Quinn have come to Midnight, and Manfred confessed that he knew Sookie, maybe Sookie and Sam could make a visit in the next book? I hope so.
