Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Many years ago, American rhetoric Martin Luther King, Jr made his famous 'I have a dream' speech. Which farmyard animal also claimed to have had a dream before the rebellion started?

Answer: Old Major

Three days before Old Major died, he called a meeting with the farmyard animals. He discussed the need for rebellion and shared with them a dream he'd had, a dream about how wonderful the Earth would be without 'man' in it. According to Major, it was in this dream that the words of the song "Beast of England" came to him.

The song would become their theme song for some time after Old Major's death.
2. Old Major was quite a character before his death. Which of the following facts about Old Major is INCORRECT?

Answer: He had a horrible death

Three nights after his 'I had a dream' speech, Old Major died peacefully in his sleep. All other facts mentioned here are correct.
3. After three months of studies in reading and writing, the pigs were able to reduce what they called "The Principles of Animalism" to seven commandments. Which of the following was NOT one of the ORIGINAL seven commandments?

Answer: No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets

The seven original commandments were as follows:
1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings is a friend.
3. No animal shall wear clothes.
4. No animal shall sleep in a bed.
5. No animal shall drink alcohol.
6. No animal shall kill another animal.
7. All animals are equal.
Later, as the pigs became established as the dominant force on the farm and deviated from the basic principles of Animalism, they modified the commandments to match their practices. For example, the 5th commandment became 'No animal shall drink alcohol in excess', when the pigs were caught drinking alcohol. The 6th commandment was amended to read 'No animal shall kill another animal without cause', following the mass execution of animals under Napoleon's rule.
4. Initially, sharing the principles of Animalism was met with some resistance. Here's a dialogue between two animals: Animal #1: "Shall I still be allowed to wear ribbons in my mane?" Animal #2: "Comrade, those ribbons that you are so devoted to are the badge of slavery." Which two animals are having this dialogue?

Answer: Mollie and Snowball

Snowball, Napoleon and Squealer were the ones who took the initiative to continue the teachings of Old Major after his death. Sharing their thoughts with some of the animals was not easy in the beginning. Mollie was quite a self centered, vain white mare who wasn't willing to sacrifice her comforts for the struggle.

Other animals made comments such as "If the rebellion is to happen anyway, what difference does it make whether we work for it or not?" Others said, "Mr Jones feeds us."
5. While some of the animals were hard working, a few were lazy. Well seated among the latter group was Moses, the tame raven. Moses informed the animals that there was a special place called 'Sugar Candy Mountain' where animals go when they die. The following statements about Sugar Candy Mountain are true EXCEPT:

Answer: It was situated here on Earth, only a few miles from animal farm

Moses was Mr Jones' pet whom he fed from time to time with bread crust soaked in beer. According to Moses, Sugar Candy Mountain was situated in the sky, a little distance beyond the clouds. Might Moses have been under the influence of alcohol?
6. The tactic of one particular animal was to disappear for hours when there was work to be done and reappear at meal times. Which of these animals did this?

Answer: The cat

The cat was the animal with this pattern of behavior. She always gave excellent excuses when she showed up. Mollie on the other hand was noted for sleeping late and leaving the work site early, claiming there was a stone in her hoof.
Boxer was an ardent worker, while Snowball worked in a supervisory capacity.
7. One animal remained unchanged by the rebellion. While he didn't shirk from work as the custom of some was, he never volunteered to do anything extra. He was the oldest animal on the farm. Which animal was this?

Answer: Benjamin

Old Major died before the rebellion took place. Benjamin continued to work pretty much the same way he did before the rebellion. Boxer worked very hard and his personal motto was "I will work harder". Squealer was more of a public relations person. As he had explained to the animals, the pigs were 'brain workers'.
8. Snowball organized the animals into several committees. Which of the following was not one of these committees?

Answer: The Homeless Comrades Committee

The Egg Production Committee was for the hens, the Clean Tails Committee for the cows and the Wild Comrades' Re-education Committee for the rats and rabbits. It was hoped that the latter would tame the rats and rabbits. There was also the Whiter Wool Movement for the sheep and other projects, all of which were failures.
9. In addition to forming committees for the smooth running of the operations on the farm, there was also a drive to promote literacy. Which animal refused to learn more than the letters that spelt her name?

Answer: Mollie

Though she couldn't put words together, Clover knew all the letters of the alphabet. Muriel was able to read to the other animals from scraps of newspaper found in the rubbish. Jessie was a dog. The dogs read fairly well. Miss Mollie was content to learn only the letters in her own name.
10. The less literate animals on the farm couldn't recall more than the letter A in the alphabet, let alone remember the seven commandments. Snowball taught them a maxim which he claimed embodied the seven commandments. What was it?

Answer: Four legs good, two legs bad

The "stupidier" animals included the sheep, hens and ducks. Snowball believed that all they needed to know in order to protect themselves from humans was "four legs good, two legs bad". It was Squealer who later taught the sheep to recite "four legs good, two legs better" under the Napoleon rule when the pigs themselves started walking on hind legs.
11. Who was responsible for spreading rumors that the animals on Animal Farm were rapidly starving to death, practicing cannibalism and torturing each other with red-hot horseshoes?

Answer: Frederick and Pilkington

Frederick and Pilkington were owners of the nearby farms Pinchfield and Foxwood. When they heard of Mr Jones' misfortune, they were worried that their own animals would hear about the rebellion on Animal Farm and try to do likewise. They resorted to spreading rumors.
12. The pigs kept the cow's milk and apples for themselves instead of sharing equally. This blatant disregard for equality caused some murmuring. Which pig started his address to the murmurers with these words? "Comrades!, you don't imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples...."

Answer: Squealer

Squealer claimed that he personally hated milk and apples but science has proven that they help to preserve health. The pigs were taking the milk and apples so they could enhance their ability to watch over the welfare of the animals on the farm. He always ended these speeches by giving the impression that if the pigs didn't do certain things, Jones would come back. None of the animals wanted that to happen.
13. During Napoleon's rule, he decided that the hens' eggs had to be sold to pay for grain and meal. The hens staged a rebellion. What did they do to prevent the marketing of their eggs?

Answer: Flew up in the rafters and laid their eggs there so that they smashed on the ground

Napoleon, who wasn't one for debating and negotiations, responded by forbidding any animal to give food to the hens. The rebellion lasted five days during which nine hens died. The hens went back to laying eggs in the proper places. The leaders of the hens' rebellion were later slaughtered by Napoleons' guard dogs.
14. Mr. Jones and others attempted to re-claim the farm but the animals fought bravely and prevailed. All of the humans fled, save one which was left lying face down in the mud. Which animals are having this dialogue about the lad? Animal #1: "He's dead, I had no intention of doing that...who would believe that I did not do this on purpose?" Animal #2: "No sentimentality, comrade! War is war, The only good human being is a dead one."

Answer: Boxer and Snowball

Snowball was in charge of this battle which was later referred to as the Battle of Cowshed. The attack by the humans was long anticipated so Snowball had a plan which he executed to the admiration of all the animals. He was even grazed by a bullet and was bleeding. Boxer was wearing iron shoes.

He hit one of Jones' men and thought the lad had died when he stretched out face down in the mud. It turned out that the lad was just stunned. He too ran away when the coast was clear.
15. There came a time when food was indeed scarce on the farm. The animals didn't want this information to become public. Whom did they use to convey to the outside world that there was enough food on the farm?

Answer: Whymper

One tactic used was to have the sheep make remarks about the adequacy of food in Whympers' earshot. Another more elaborate scheme was to fill the food bins with sand then spread grain and meal above the sand to convey the impression that the bins were overflowing with food.

When Whymper visited they found reason for him to pass through the store shed. He reported to the outside world that there was no shortage of food on Animal Farm.
