Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A very principal character in the book is also known by the names of Annatar (Lord of Gifts), Artano (High-Smith) and Gorthaur. What is his real name?

Answer: Sauron

Sauron conferred these titles upon himself. During the making of Arda he lived on the island of Almaren as one of the Maia of Aule called Gorthaur. When he returned from the drowning of Numenor and tried to buy the loyalty of the Elves with gifts he was known as Annatar. When he forged the Rings of Power he was called Artano.
2. She was the wife of Dior, mother of Elwing and grandmother of Elrond and Elros. Her name is the same as that of the white tree of Numenor which was created in the likeness of Telperion and first given to the Elves of Tol Eressea by Yavanna. Who am I talking about?

Answer: Nimloth

Nimloth was an elf-maid of Doriath who married Dior, Thingol's heir, and was the mother of Elwing. She was the daughter of Galathil and great-grand daughter of Elmo who was a relatively unknown brother of Elwe and Olwe.
3. The story of Beren and Luthien is the most well known of all in the First Age of the world. Together they managed to lay their hands on one of the Silmarils of Morgoth, but it was swallowed by the great wolf Carcharoth. He was the most powerful wolf in the world and he fulfilled the Doom that lay upon Huan, Hound of Valinor though he himself was vanquished in their great fight. Huan was actually gifted to Celegorm by one of the Valar. Which of the Valar gave Huan to the son of Feanor?

Answer: Orome

Orome of the Valar was a great warrior and he was known as 'Lord of the Forest'. His own dog of War was Huan, the strongest wolfhound in the world. A Doom lay upon Huan that he would be vanquished only by the most powerful wolf that had ever walked the earth. Huan slew the great wolf but was himself killed in the fight. The Silmaril was reclaimed from the belly of Carcaroth, thus fulfilling Beren's promise to Thingol.
4. What was the name of the 'Star of the North Kingdom' which descended to Elendil from Silmarien and was lost in 'The Disaster of the Gladden Fields' when Isildur perished? It was made of Elvish crystal and could not be quenched by the One Ring.

Answer: Elendilmir

The Elendilmir was borne by Elendil when he was waging the battle against Sauron. After Isildur inherited it and was going to Imladris to meet Elrond, it was seemingly lost along with his body after he perished by the arrow of an orc. It was found again at the end of the Third Age in the Tower of Orthanc where 'Saruman had kept it along with a small case attached to a fine chain which had once been around Isildur's neck and was used without doubt to contain the One Ring'.
5. The band of Wizards that were sent by the Valar to protect the people of Middle-Earth from Sauron without vying for his power consisted of Five Istari. Curomo (Saruman) was chosen by Aule, Aiwendil (Radagast) was sent by Yavanna and Alatar and Pallando were sent by Orome. Who chose Olorin (Gandalf)?

Answer: Manwe and Varda

Gandalf was summoned by Manwe to go to Middle-earth and help the people against Sauron. At first Gandalf said that he was afraid of Sauron but finally heeded the words of Manwe and Varda. Saruman and Radagast were already chosen and Manwe wanted to send Olorin as the third wizard.

But Varda intervened and said that he should not go as the third. Saruman who was supposed to be the first to go, remembered these words and this seems to be the cause of his fear and hostility towards Gandalf in later years.
6. Gandalf carried a flask of Miruvor with him to help the 'Fellowship of the Ring' on their southward journey.

Answer: Yes

'The reviving cordial of the Elves, Miruvor, was a clear and cloudless liquor with a pleasant fragrance and the power to grant renewed vigour and strength'. The Dunedain and the orcs had their own versions but this was the most powerful of the lot.
7. During the sack of Menegroth by the sons of Feanor, the two older sons of Dior were seized by the servants of Celegorm and abandoned in the forest to fend for themselves. Maedhros, the oldest son of Feanor, repented this bitterly and combed the forest for them, but they were never found. Who were they?

Answer: Elured and Elurin

Of the brothers of Elwing no tale tells except that they were lost in the forest and never found again. 'But tradition among the Nandor of Ossiriand held that Elured and Elurin were led to the safety of the woodlands by birds and beasts, and survived'.
8. Gondolin, the Hidden City of Turgon was protected by seven gates. What are they in order of entering Gondolin?

Answer: Wooden, Stone, Bronze, Iron, Silver, Gold, Steel

These gates to the Hidden City were intricately decorated and embellished. At each gate there wre guards in different costumes. Due to the intricacy of this security Gondolin was the only city which stayed the longest against the might of Morgoth but was finally destroyed due to the treachery of Maeglin.
9. The chief of the Balrogs was the most trusted servant of Morgoth after Sauron. He killed Feanor in the Dagor-nuin-Giliath and slew Ecthelion of the Fountain in the sack of Gondolin. Who was he?

Answer: Gothmog

Gothmog's personal weapon was a great black axe. He was responsible for slaying many Elvish heroes such as Feanor, Fingon and Ecthelion. In the great battle between Gothmog and Ecthelion they were both slain.
10. There were only three known unions of Man and Elf in all the Ages of Arda. The one between Beren and Luthien produced Dior, Thingol's heir. Tuor and Idril's wedlock led to the birth of Earendil the Mariner. Aragorn and Arwen had a son. What was his name?

Answer: Eldarion

Eldarion was the only son of Aragorn and Arwen, but he had many sisters. 'Eldarion means 'Son of the Eldar'. In the year 120 of the Fourth Age, Aragorn perceived that his life was coming to an end and that his son was ready to assume kingship of Gondor and Arnor. Eldarion accompanied his father to the House of Kings in the Silent Street and received the Winged Crown of Gondor and the Sceptre of Arnor from him.

Then Eldarion said goodbye to his father and Aragorn died. Eldarion's mother Arwen then bid him farewell and went to Lothlorien where she died a year later'. Eldarion was the second King of the Reunited Kingdom'.
