Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bilbo's 'second disappearance' was discussed in the Shire for a year and a day. Which of these ideas about his disappearance was not something assumed by the general opinion in Hobbiton?

Answer: Bilbo had taken his wealth and gone into hiding.

Bilbo had gone on a 'very long holiday' in search of new horizons. All the rumours that were circulating after Bilbo's last adventure became popular again and the legend of Mad Baggins and his adventures eventually became a favourite fireside-story in the Shire.
2. Before encountering Gildor on the road to Buckland, Frodo believes that only Gandalf and one other are aware of his secret plan to leave the Shire; who is the other?

Answer: Sam

Frodo is surprised to learn that Gildor the Elf knows his true intentions, and it is later revealed that Frodo's closely guarded secret is known also to Merry, Pippin and even Fredegar Bolger, with Sam emerging as the ringleader.
3. Which of these statements regarding Tom Bombadil is incorrect?

Answer: He has a green hat.

The hobbits are rescued from Old Man Willow's ensnarement by the very merry Tom Bombadil. Tom is a being of many colours but he does not wear a green hat; rather 'his thick, brown hair was crowned with autumn leaves'.
4. A mysterious Ranger called Strider requests a 'quiet talk' with Mr. Underhill (Frodo) at The Prancing Pony in Bree. He claims to have 'some good advice' for Frodo but what is the reward he demands in return?

Answer: Frodo must allow him to join their company.

Strider informs Frodo of the movements of the Black Riders and urges caution. Frodo gradually warms to him as he recognises the stranger's goodwill and eventually grants his reward.
5. The company must cross the Ford of Bruinen to reach Rivendell and save Frodo; by what name does Strider refer to the river Bruinen?

Answer: Loudwater

Hoarwell and Greyflood are adjoining rivers and Silverlode runs through Lórien. The company must reach Rivendell before Frodo succumbs to his mortal wound, but before reaching the Ford, they are assailed once again by Black Riders.
6. 'A great black horseman, a dark shadow under the moon. Wherever he came a madness filled our foes, but fear fell on our boldest, so that horse and man gave way and fled.' - Who is Boromir referring to in this passage?

Answer: Sauron

Boromir is describing the presence of Sauron, whom he calls the Nameless Enemy, in a battle for Ithilien. Boromir confirms that Sauron has returned to near full-strength, as he takes part in the Council of Elrond.
7. The passage of the Misty Mountains is fraught with danger for the Fellowship, no matter which road they take. Opinion in the company is divided as to what way is best; which is Aragorn's contentious preference?

Answer: Redhorn Gate

Aragorn's preference is disputed within the company but is nevertheless attempted by the Fellowship. This passage proves treacherous and the Mountain defeats them, forcing the company to attempt a darker and seemingly more dangerous way, the Mines of Moria (Gandalf's preference).
8. As the Bridge of Khazad-dűm and freedom from Moria nears, the Fellowship is pursued doggedly by orcs and 'some new devilry'. According to Gandalf, haste is necessary but escape will depend on what?

Answer: the sun shining outside.

'Now for the last race!' said Gandalf. 'If the sun is shining outside, we may still escape. After me!' The sun shining means the orcs will not pursue them out of Moria and thankfully, it is. Unfortunately for Gandalf, another obstacle bars his way; a Balrog, and he will fall alongside the 'flame of Udűn' into the abyss.
9. In the golden woods of Lórien, Frodo has at last found someone who might justly relieve him of the One Ring, the virtuous Lady Galadriel. Of these virtues, which is not attributed to Galadriel by Frodo, in justifying offering her the Ring?

Answer: She is noble.

Galadriel admits she has 'greatly desired' the Ring, but after a display of the power she would hold, she declines Frodo's offer and chooses to 'remain Galadriel'. Frodo's fate is sealed; he will depart Lórien the next day and carry on his quest as the Ring-bearer.
10. With the Fellowship broken, Frodo and Sam continue the journey to the Land of Shadow by crossing the river Anduin and landing on the southern slopes of where?

Answer: Amon Lhaw

Sam jumps Frodo trying to leave Amon Hen unseen. Frodo eventually accepts that Sam won't be leaving his side and after Sam grabs 'a spare blanket, and some extra packages of food', the two hobbits begin the next phase of their mission.
