Although Satomi is the current guard in the manga version of the story, in both the film and the novel it is Yuka Nakagawa who is on guard. The lighthouse girls had all taken it in turns to keep watch at the top of the lighthouse, each taking one of the long-range weapons with them when it was their turn.

Satomi was the first of the girls to get terrified after Yuka was poisoned, and grabbed her gun while threatening all of the other girls. Her first accusation is thrown at Haruka, because Haruka was one of the girls cooking. Haruka then says that Satomi must be the killer, because she is overreacting so much.

Mitsuru had always been a bully himself, but he made the mistake of messing with a group of guys who were considerably bigger and stronger than he was. Mitsuru is the first of the students to die from Kazuo's machine gun, which is why it is accepted that the gun belonged to Ryuhei Sasagawa - all the students before him were stabbed, but after Ryuhei's death, Kazuo had the machine gun at his disposal.
