Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the design on the standard on Corsairs of Umbar when they were seen by the Riders of Rohan, and many others during the battle of Pelennor Fields?

Answer: All of these

The Riders, soldiers of Gondor, and their allies despaired when they saw the Corsairs approaching. They did not know, though, that it was Aragorn come from from the Paths of the Dead until he raised the standard with the White Tree of Gondor, seven stars wrought by Arwen Evenstar, and the crown of Elendil, made from gold and mithril.
2. Who brought Aragorn a message concerning the Paths of the Dead from Elrond?

Answer: Elrohir

Halbarad and Elrohir rode in the same company seeking Aragorn, but Elrohir relayed his father's words. At this time Gandalf took Pippin to Minas Tirith on Shadowfax, after Pippin looked into the palantír. The message from Elrond was this: "The days are short. If thou art in haste, remember the Paths of the Dead." To which Aragorn replied, "Great indeed will be my haste ere I take that road."
3. Had Frodo ever seen Arwen before the Ring was destroyed and the hobbits witnessed Arwen's wedding to King Elessar?

Answer: Yes, in Rivendell

After being stabbed by a Morgul-blade on Weathertop, Frodo recovers at Rivendell, where he sees Arwen Evenstar, whom few mortals had ever seen, for the first time. Arwen was the daughter of Elrond and Celebrían, granddaughter of Celeborn and Galadriel, Lord and Lady of the Wood. (Lothlórien)
4. What incident made Éomer cry: "What madness or devilry is this? Death, death, death! Death take us all!"

Answer: Finding Éowyn wounded at Pelennor Fields and thinking her dead

The Lady Éowyn, Éomer's sister, was taken for dead after killing the Nazgul-Lord, with aid from Merry, until the Prince of Dol Amroth proved them wrong by showing them them the vambrace on his arm which had barely misted with her breath. She was taken to the Houses of Healing; her shield-arm was broken, but the real damage was to the sword-arm, lifeless after contact with an enemy beyond her strength.
5. What was Éowyn's objection when Faramir actually said he would marry her if she was willing?

Answer: She was afraid of what his people would say

She was in love with Aragorn, but her heart changed and she only was concerned with Faramir's reputation later, and after Faramir reassured her it did not matter, she readily consented. Éowyn did not want anyone's pity, and Faramir told her that, even though he once pitied her sorrow, he would still love her even if she was queen of Gondor.
6. The 'cruel' mountain Caradhras forced the Fellowship to turn back after:

Answer: Their fire died and a raging blizzard conquered them

The snow was so heavy and fierce that even Aragorn and Boromir, two strong Men, had difficulty forcing a path through it. And so since they could not pass over the Redhorn (Caradhras) they had to go through the Mines of Moria, where they found out that Balin, one of the dwarves from 'the Hobbit', had died attempting to re-take the Mines. It was here they encountered the Balrog.
7. Traveling down the Great River Anduin, the Fellowship saw the likeness of two great men, in the shape of huge statues. What country were these men born in?

Answer: Númenor

The likenesses of Isildur and Anárion were still intimidating and awesome after hundreds of years. These were the Argonath, Pillars of Kings, carved of stone along the River Anduin.
8. Why did Frodo warn Gollum about swearing on the One Ring?

Answer: It would try to twist the meaning of his words

The truth of Frodo's words was revealed before long when Sam, unknown to Gollum, listened to Gollum's debate with himself, when he tried to justify the action of taking the Ring. In the end, Gollum's lust for the Ring would be his death.
9. Why couldn't Iarwain take the Ring?

Answer: The Ring had no power over him and he would forget its importance and throw it away

Iarwain, commonly known as Tom Bombadil, had a certain power over the Ring - or at least It had no power over him. He even failed to become invisible after he set the Ring on his finger. He was called Forn by the Dwarves, Orald by Northern Men, Iarwain Ben-adar by the Elves, oldest and fatherless.
10. Who bore the greatest of the Elven-rings, Vilya, out of Middle-earth?

Answer: Elrond

The three elven-rings were taken out of Middle-earth by Gandalf (Narya), Elrond (Vilya), and Galadriel (Nenya). Vilya was greatest and had a blue stone; Galadriel's ring Nenya, the Ring of Adamant, was wrought of mithril and bore one frosty white stone. Gandalf wore Narya the Great, and the stone upon it was like red fire.
