Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which of the following films featured a story called 'The Wurdalak'?

Answer: Black Sabbath

Boris Karloff played the role of a father who comes back home to suck the blood of those he loves after being turned into a vampire by the wurdalak he went off to hunt.
2. Which film starred Barbara Steele as a witch who returns for revenge after being burned at the stake?

Answer: Black Sunday

Also known as 'La Maschera Del Demonio', 'Black Sunday' is probably one of the best known Italian horror films. Directed by Mario Bava and released in 1961, it brought gothic horror to a new level with its moody lighting and horrific imagery.
3. The following is a list of legendary actors and films they appeared in. Which of the following was not directed by an Italian director?

Answer: Oliver Reed, 'The Devils'

Directed by Ken Russell, 'The Devils' has been censored in many countries and is hard to find. It features a staggering performance by Vanessa Redgrave as a vengeful nun who aids in having Reed's character wrongfully burned at the stake.
4. Mario Bava was the son of Lamberto Bava and the two would go on to work together on movies such as 'Shock' and 'Demons'.

Answer: False

It is the other way around. Lamberto was the son of Mario and first worked together on the set of the sci-fi classic, 'Planet of the Vampires'. They also worked together on 'Shock' where Mario gave Lamberto his first chance at directing a scene by himself.
5. Monica Ranieri was the name of a character and killer in what classic Dario Argento film?

Answer: The Bird With the Crystal Plumage

Filmed in 1970, it shows a hint of lesbianism coupled with a unique sculptural aesthetic style typical of the genre making it one of the most innovative of the period.
6. A mysterious masked killer stalks and kills his prey in a black trenchcoat, fedora hat and leather gloves leaving brutal murders all over the city. What category do Italians typically label this type of story?

Answer: giallo

Meaning 'yellow' in Italian, giallo is a type of mystery and suspense book, usually a pulp title with a yellow cover in which the characters generally are offed with much brutality and killed by a mysterious killer generally donning the fabled trenchcoat, leather gloves, nylon mask and fedora hat. The name was then applied to films with the same type of storyline.
7. Which of the following does not belong with the others?

Answer: Demonia

'Demonia' is the only film of the choices not directed by Dario Argento. It was done by Lucio Fulci who is best known for his various zombie films.
8. In Lucio Fulci's film, 'The Beyond' aka 'Seven Doors of Death', what is the name of the book the keeps popping up in unexpected places?

Answer: The Book of Eibon

'The Book of Eibon' is an H.P. Lovecraft book and while it appears in the movie, it really has no relevance to the story but rather is likely scriptwriter Dardano Sacchetti's tribute to Lovecraft since he is known to be a fan of his work.
9. Which 1971 Italian film stated on the movie poster, 'The Worms Are Waiting...'?

Answer: The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave

Another wonderful hard-to-find title about a man obsessed by his ex-wife, the one he murdered, and the guilt that haunts him.
10. In 'Blood and Black Lace', what kind of business does Countess Christina run?

Answer: A house of haute couture

One by one, her models get picked off by the mysterious killer in this giallo classic.
