Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "If you survive this night... nothing will ever scare you again". What 1970s movie was this the tagline for?

Answer: Alice, Sweet Alice

The movie revolved around two sisters, Alice and Karen. Karen was about to make her first communion. Alice was extremely jealous of all the attention Karen was getting because of it. Alice wanted the crucifix that Father Tom had given Karen as a gift. On the day of her communion, Karen was killed. Her body was placed in a church pew and set on fire. Throughout the whole movie you believed that Karen killed her younger sister. It was revealed at the end that a religious fanatic was the culprit. The killer's name was Mrs. Tredoni. Her reason behind killing Karen was she believed she needed to be punished for her mother's sins.

The film actually had three titles and three separate release dates. It was first released in 1976 as "Communion". It was then released in 1978 as "Alice, Sweet Alice". The final of the three release dates was in 1981 and the film was titled "Holy Terror". The reason for the three dates was to capitalize on the popularity of Brooke Shields. She played the role of Karen in the film. The film was directed by Alfred Sole.

The tagline for the film was not that well thought out in my opinion. I can see how it might have related to the original title of "Communion". I guess that the filmmakers were trying to play off the insanity of the killer and her strong religious beliefs. I still enjoyed the film regardless of the fact the tagline was not on point. I think this tagline would have been better suited for "Halloween" or even "Friday the 13th". The majority of the killings in these two movies were done at night.
2. What film was the acting debut for Tom Hanks?

Answer: He Knows You're Alone

Tom Hanks had a very small part in this 1980 film. He played the role of Elliot in the film. The film was about a rejected man who took revenge on a bride on her wedding day. The killer returned several years later and started to kill again. Meanwhile, the man of the first woman killed had become a police detective. His name was Len Gamble and he was determined to track down the killer of his fiance.

The film was released in 1980 and was directed by Armand Mastroianni. It starred Lewis Arlt as the obsessed police detective. Tom Rolfing starred as Ray Carlton, the killer. Tom's role was extremely small; he was supposed to be a victim of the killer. His death scene was removed because he was so well liked by the filmmakers. I guess they got a glimpse of the gigantic star he was going to become.
3. How was Kirby killed in "Scream 4"?

Answer: Charlie stabbed Kirby in the stomach with a knife.

Charlie had an enormous crush on Kirby all through high school. Kirby secretly liked Charlie, but would not admit it. Charlie was considered a film geek and Kirby was popular. One night while at Kirby's house, they watched one of the "Stab" films. Kirby made a pass at Charlie, and they both started to kiss when Trevor walked into the room. When the two were finally alone again, Charlie stabbed Kirby in the stomach. He had fallen in love with Jill and was helping her kill people as the Ghostface Killer.

"Scream 4" was released in 2011. It was directed by Wes Craven, who also directed the earlier films. Kevin Williamson also wrote the script for the film. Hayden Panettiere played the role of Kirby. Rory Culkin and Emma Roberts played the killers. Courtney Cox, Neve Campbell, and David Arquette all reprised their roles from the first three films. I loved this movie as it was somehow a little darker then the rest. It still contained humor, though, like the first three.
4. Who starred as Pluto in "The Hills Have Eyes" (1977)?

Answer: Michael Berryman

Just the sight of Michael Berryman makes me uneasy. He was magnificently cast as Pluto, one of the children of the cannibal clan. Jupiter and Mama are the parents of Pluto, Mars, Mercury, and Ruby. They turned to cannibalism when there was no other food available to them. They terrorized and attacked the Carter family when they broke down in the desert while traveling for vacation.

"The Hills Have Eyes" was directed by Wes Craven. It was released in 1977 and starred Michael Berryman and Dee Wallace. This film was more or less about revenge for me. After the Carter family was attacked, they went on to murder the clan.

Michael Berryman is an extremely unusual looking man. He is bald from a genetic condition that he was born with. Michael was born on September 4, 1948. I think his medical condition has only heightened his popularity. He is an extremely gifted actor in my opinion. He did a great job in "The Hills Have Eyes" and the sequel to the film. He also starred opposite Jack Nicholson in "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest".
5. In the original "Halloween", how did Michael kill Annie?

Answer: Michael strangled Annie in her car.

Annie had gone out to her car. She was going to pick up her boyfriend Paul. When she got to the car it was locked and she went to retrieve her keys. As she returned to the car she opened the door without the keys. She didn't realize that the car was now unlocked. Her car windows were all fogged up from the inside. Michael attacked Annie from the back seat of the car. Michael strangled Annie and then took her back into the house.

The original "Halloween" was released in 1978. The film was directed by John Carpenter. John also did the music for the film. Nancy Kyes starred as the sarcastic Annie. The film also starred P.J. Soles and Jamie Lee Curtis. I met P.J. at a horror movie convention in Maryland in 2010. She was an extremely nice woman.
6. Which of these films starred Carl Boehm as a murderous voyeur?

Answer: Peeping Tom

Mark Lewis wanted to be a filmmaker; he was obsessed with it. Mark had a bit of a dark side, and he liked to follow women with his camera. He would watch them and tape them without the women knowing it. His first victim was a prostitute; he killed her while the camera recorded it. Later Mark went back and watched the films he made. Mark killed himself in the same way he killed his victims when the police were going to arrest him.

This film was released in 1960 and was directed by Michael Powell. It reminded me of "Raising Cain" by Brian De Palma. In both movies the father used their young children as test subjects in their experiments. Carl Boehm starred as Mark Lewis.
7. In "The Shining", what cartoon was Danny watching while in his room?

Answer: Road Runner

Danny was in his room watching the cartoon while his mother paced back and forth. We could hear the music from the television show playing. Wendy was trying to decide what to do. She knew that they had to get out of the hotel before something incredibly bad happened. It sounded almost like she was trying to convince herself that this was the right thing to do. Shortly after she talked to Jack about her decision, he tried to attack her. Wendy was able to knock Jack out with a bat she had been carrying. She locked Jack in the storage pantry of the hotel.

"The Road Runner Show" aired on CBS for two non-consecutive seasons. The theme song was written and performed by Barbara Cameron. I always thought Stanley choose this particular cartoon because it showed how the road runner always outsmarted the coyote. It is exactly what Danny did to his father especially in the maze scene.
8. "Every babysitter's nightmare becomes real". What movie was this the tag line for?

Answer: When a Stranger Calls

Jill was babysitting for Dr. and Mrs. Mandrakis. She received several phone calls asking about the children. Jill at first thought the calls were a joke. She later learned that the calls were coming from inside the house. The man who had been calling her had killed the Mandrakis children earlier that night. The killer's name was Curt Duncan. Curt was arrested, but escaped from the mental hospital he was being held at. Jill was now grown up and married with children of her own. Curt had found where she lived and tried to kill Jill. He was shot and killed by the same detective who arrested him years ago. The detective was hired by the Mandrakis family to capture Duncan.

The film was released in 1979. It was directed by Fred Walton. Carol Kane starred as Jill Johnson. The film was remade in 2006, but it was nowhere as good as the original.
9. Which chapter of the "Friday the 13th" series had a girl with psychic powers battling Jason?

Answer: Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood

Tina Shepard had psychic powers; she had used these powers to accidentally kill her father. Her father was abusing her mother and Tina got scared and caused the pier that her father was on to crash down. Her father died from drowning. Tina and her mother returned to the lake house where her father had perished a few years later. Tina was accompanied by her doctor, Dr. Crews. Tina and her mother soon learned that Dr. Crews was not trying to help Tina, but exploit her powers. Tina again got upset and her powers woke up Jason. Jason was at the bottom of the lake when Tina's powers awoke him.

I really liked this chapter of the "Friday the 13th" franchise. Jason was really pushed to the limit by Tina. This was the first time that Kane Hodder played the role of Jason. "Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood" was released in 1989. It was directed by John Carl Buechler.
10. Who starred as Josh Lambert in the 2011 film "Insidious"?

Answer: Patrick Wilson

This film was incredibly scary to watch. It was not a blood-and-gore type of film at all. It messed with your mind and it did it exceptionally well. Josh and Renai Lambert's son, Dalton, went to bed one night and wouldn't wake up the next day. It was soon found out that Dalton was possessed by a number of different entities. Josh had to go into a realm called "The Further" to retrieve his son. It was revealed that Josh and Dalton could both travel out of their bodies to different realms. Josh found and rescued his son, but was possessed by a entity that had been trying to get at him for over 30 years.

The film was released in April of 2011, and was directed by James Wan. It was written by Leigh Wannell, who also had a role in the film. Both Leigh and James had worked together previously on the movie "Saw".

Patrick Wilson starred as Josh Lambert. He had repressed the memory of the entity that tried to possess him as a child. Patrick is a truly gifted actor and singer. He also starred in "Watchmen". Patrick was born on July 3, 1973 in Norfolk, Virginia.
