Okja (2017) Trivia Quiz

In Lucy Mirando's (played by Tilda Swinton) speech she tells about how the Mirando Corporation loved and nurtured the super piglet while also performing certain studies. Through genetic manipulation the Mirando Corporation created 26 super piglets. These super piglets were then sent to Mirando's 26 worldwide offices to have a competition that would take place in 10 years for local farmers to raise the largest super pig.

Answer: Fish

The small piglet from 2007 has grown into a hippo-sized creature by 2017. The docile Okja is playful and she rolls against a tree to knock down fruit for Mija and then she belly flops into a small lake to splash fish onto the shore. Mija then uses these fish to cook a fish stew with her grandfather Hee Bong.

Answer: A tumble off a cliff

When Mija tells Okja they are taking a shortcut on the steep cliffs to get home Okja is visibly frightened. Mija tries to tie a rope as a leash around Okja's neck but she slips and falls off the cliff. Luckily Okja is able to hold the rope and swing it around a tree branch to propel Mija back to safety. Unfortunately when she does this Okja ends up falling off the cliff.

Answer: Jake Gyllenhaal

As Mija and her grandfather are tending to Okja a team led by the eccentric TV zoologist Johnny Wilcox arrives. Wilcox is amazed by the size, health and gentle behavior of Okja and he tells them that Okja is the winner of the super pig competition. Jake Gyllenhaal played the part of Johnny Wilcox who was a successful TV host of animal shows before he was hired by the Mirando Corporation. Prior to his role in "Okja", Jake Gyllenhaal starred in numerous films including "Brokeback Mountain" (2005) and "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" (2010).

Answer: ALF (Animal Liberation Front)

The driver of the large truck transporting Okja notices a nearby truck with individuals in black masks driving erratically. This truck rams them into the wall and then Okja is freed from her enclosure. The group's leader, Jay, then spray paints the initials ALF on the front of the truck. Mirando Corporation's Korean lead Mundo looks up these initials and realizes it's for the Animal Liberation Front and that they are trying to stop Okja's transport.

The Animal Liberation Front was founded in the 1970s in the United Kingdom by Ronnie Lee and Cliff Goodman and by 2021 the organization had active cells in more than 40 countries.

Answer: Forced mating

The ALF switched out Mirando's ear monitor with one of their own that had video recording so they could show the world what was going on in Mirando's labs. As Dr. Wilcox leads Okja into the lab she is introduced to a male super pig named Alfonso and they are forced to mate. Her squeals and discomfort are caught on the video recording as the ALF members watch and listen in horror.

Answer: Don't look back at the screen.

Jay is hiding in the room that the Mirando Corporation has provided for Mija and he explains to Mija through English-Korean note cards that the ALF will be rescuing Okja from the stage. He also tells Mija to not look back at the screen when Okja is being rescued. We later see that the screen showed images of Okja suffering mistreatment while at Mirando Corporation's facilities.

The hint in the clue regarding Genesis 19 is a reference to the Biblical story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. While the cities are being destroyed those fleeing are commanded to not look back at the destruction but Lot's wife tragically looks back and is turned into a pillar of salt.

While the group was still in Korea Jay asks Mija if she approved of the plan to let Okja be re-captured by Mirando Corporation so that she could provide recording of the mistreatment at the facilities. Mija answers that she wants to take Okja back to her home in the mountains but K mistranslates her words and tells the group that she approves of the plan.

When K later confesses Jay hits him and kicks him out of the ALF. After the attempted rescue of Okja at the New York event K reappears and he is able to get a large truck and rescue Jay and Mija as they are running from security.

After the New York event unveiling Okja goes awry and the videos of Mirando Corporation's labs go viral Nancy replaces her sister Lucy as CEO of the company. Nancy walks into the slaughterhouse after being notified that there are intruders and she sees Mija pleading with the man about to end Okja's life.

After her pleas for mercy are not granted Mija slides a gold pig figurine to Nancy. Nancy bites down on it seemingly verifying it's real gold and then states they have a deal and Okja is released.

Answer: Bong Joon-ho

Bong Joon-ho was born in Daegu, South Korea, in 1969. Prior to his work on "Okja", Bong Joon-ho directed the monster film "The Host" (2006) and the post-apocalyptic film "Snowpiercer" (2013). His 2019 film "Parasite" became the first non-English film to win an Academy Award for Best Picture and he also won Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for the movie.

Much of the story for "Okja" was developed by Bong Joon-ho in early 2015 and after its rights were acquired by Netflix filming took place in Seoul, Vancouver and New York.
