Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Instead of witches, Madoka and her friends are fighting strange new beings known as Nightmares. Which victim of the day are they shown rescuing from the Nightmares?

Answer: Hitomi

Nightmares are similar to monsters of the day in conventional magical girl series such as 'Pretty Cure'. They look like dolls with wide mouths and blue hands. Madoka and Sayaka's friend Hitomi turns into a Nightmare because she is frustrated about Kyosuke spending all his time playing the violin, and not enough time with her.

The Nightmares are not actually real enemies, but creations of the witch's barrier the girls are in, to give them something to fight.
2. While fighting the Nightmares, the girls sing a bizarre song about cake. Each one of them sings about being a different fruit. Which fruit is Sayaka?

Answer: Raspberry

The group captures the Nightmare and sing the cake song, which makes it turn into cake. According to TV Tropes, there is symbolism associated with the fruits chosen by the characters. Sayaka being a raspberry is thought to be a reference to Cure Berry, a character from 'Fresh Pretty Cure' who is voiced by the same actress as Sayaka, Eri Kitamura. Kyouko eats a lot due to having spent periods as a child with nothing to eat, and apples are one of the foods she is often seen eating. Homura being a pumpkin is thought to be a reference to the Devil, or a thick shell hiding a soft interior. Madoka sings about a melon bringing sweet dreams, and the girls are essentially living in a dream world. Mami, incidentally, sings about being cheese, rather than fruit.
3. What is the name of Mami's strange little friend who follows her everywhere and speaks in witch runes?

Answer: Bebe

If Bebe looks familiar, it's because she's actually the witch Charlotte - as in the one who ate Mami in the original series! However, in this form, she's more of a mascot character and acts as a sort of pet for Mami. Homura is immediately suspicious of her and thinks she might be a witch in disguise, especially as she speaks the same language as the witches did. Bebe is also unfriendly towards Kyubey, with good reason, as it turns out.

She is obsessed with cheese.
4. What tips Homura off that something is wrong about the world the girls are living in?

Answer: She gets on a bus with Kyouko, and it keeps going round in circles.

Homura starts to wonder if something is wrong with the world when she notices that the other kids in her class have melting faces, and the teacher goes into a rant about conspiracy theories, though everyone ignores her. Other passers-by in the streets also have distorted faces. Homura and Kyouko meet up for a drink, and then get the bus to Kazamino, where Kyouko was apparently living before she came to Mitakihara.

However, the bus goes straight back to Mitakihara, and the same thing happens when the girls get another bus. Even when they walk to Kazamino, they end up going round in a circle. Homura wonders if there is even anything outside Mitakihara.
5. What about Sayaka makes Homura suspicious of her?

Answer: She knows witches exist.

Homura stops time while at Mami's house and interrogates Bebe, but is stopped by Mami, who has attached a ribbon to Homura's leg. As she is holding the ribbon, she is not affected by Homura's time stopping. The two fight and Homura shoots herself in the head, using the bullet to break the ribbon. Mami is frozen in time and Houra shoots her in the leg, but she turns out to be a clone, and the real Mami appears and ties Homura up with ribbons. Sayaka rescues Homura, and Homura becomes suspicious of Sayaka when Sayaka asks if Homura thought Bebe was a witch, and if the world they're in is really that bad.

The reason for this is that witches do not exist in this world as Madoka's wish prevented them from being born, and the fact Sayaka knows what they are suggests something is off (Mami has no memories of witches). Oktavia von Seckendorff's shadow appears behind Sayaka, and she vanishes when Homura tries to attack her.
6. Homura realises that she and the others are trapped inside a witch's barrier, despite witches supposedly not existing in this world, and that she knows who the witch is. Who is the witch behind the barrier?

Answer: Homura herself

Homura tells Kyouko that she knows who the witch is and will deal with it herself, and refuses to elaborate further. Homura is effectively trapped in her own mental world. She figures out that as Madoka erased herself from history, and no-one else besides Homura and Madoka's little brother remember Madoka, this must mean that the barrier was created by someone who knew Madoka existed, since she is in it. Homura gets on a bus and leaves her Soul Gem behind to see what happens, and the world begins to disintegrate around her, as a sign of her deteriorating mental state.
7. Homura encounters Kyubey, who confirms that the Incubators have trapped Homura's soul gem in an isolation field. Why did the Incubators do this?

Answer: To use Homura as bait to capture Madoka

Kyubey appears earlier in the movie and appears to be non-verbal, only saying 'kyuu', but this is revealed to be an act. He and his fellow Incubators have trapped Homura's Soul Gem in an isolation field, keeping it away from any external influence and creating a barrier. Homura subconsciously pulled the other girls into the barrier with her, as deep down she wanted all of them to be friends (hence why they fight as a group, when they never fought as a quintet in the original anime).

As Madoka is now the Law of Cycles and she is within the barrier, the Incubators are hoping to observe her, as they believe that if she can be observed, she can also be interfered with, and they are effectively using Homura as bait.

They want to bring back the old witch system by controlling Madoka's power. Kyubey tells Homura to call for Madoka's help so that she will turn into the Law of Cycles, but Homura refuses.
8. Throughout the film, strange little girls with blue eyes and creepy smiles have been appearing around Mitakihara City, and they are revealed to be Homulilly's familiars. Who are they? (Hint: Homulilly is the Nutcracker Witch.)

Answer: Clara Dolls

Homura forces herself to transform into a witch, even though Kyubey warns her that she won't be saved by Madoka if she dies as a witch. Homura hopes that Mami and Kyouko will kill her once she transforms. She turns into Homulilly, a giant witch with a head made of red spider lilies.

Her hands are in stocks, and she is accompanied by a funeral procession consisting of the Clara Dolls (Clara being the heroine of 'The Nutcracker'). They pretend to be mourners, but are really mocking Homulilly, and shout 'Fort! Da!' and 'Gott is tot!' The Clara Dolls have appeared throughout the movie, often seen sitting around an organ grinder and putting their glasses on the table during the scene with Kyouko and Homura at the cafe. Each is named after a negative quality of Homura's personality: Pride, Gloominess, Liar, Coldheartedness, Selfishness, Slander, Blockhead, Jealousy, Laziness, Vanity, Cowardice, Stupidity, Envy and Stubbornness. Love, the final one, is yet to arrive.
9. Along with Mami and Kyouko, Madoka arrives to rescue Homura, and is accompanied by Sayaka and another girl, who play the role of angels, or 'private secretaries' in Sayaka's words. Both of them were absorbed into the Law of Cycles after becoming witches and then dying, and enabled Madoka to enter the witch's barrier by suppressing her memories. Who is the new magical girl?

Answer: Nagisa Momoe

Nagisa is the human form of Charlotte, the Witch of Sweets who ate Mami in episode 3 of the original anime. Her wish was to eat one more cheesecake with her dying mother, and as a result, Charlotte (and Bebe) became obsessed with cheese. She even shouts 'Parmigiano reggiano!" when she transforms.

After Mami fights Homura, Bebe turns into Nagisa and explains everything. Nagisa is younger than the other girls and is primary school age, rather than being in her teens, and she plays a trumpet which shoots explosive bubbles, shattering the outside of the barrier. By suppressing Madoka's memories within the barrier, they were able to prevent her turning into the Law of Cycles until the time was right; both Nagisa and Sayaka still had their memories, but put on an act to trick Kyubey. Sayaka is now able to summon Oktavia von Seckendorff, along with an army of familiars, while Nagisa can freely turn into Charlotte.
10. At the end of the film, Homura dies and Madoka takes her to Heaven.

Answer: False

Madoka certainly intends to take Homura to Heaven...but Homura has other ideas! She grabs Madoka's arm, splitting her from the Law of Cycles and essentially depowering her. She then turns into a demon, with Madoka's power contained in an earring, remakes the world and enslaves Kyubey as punishment for its actions, informing it that it will now carry the burden of magical girls. Though Homura's new world sees Madoka, Sayaka, Kyouko, Mami and Nagisa all alive, Sayaka is angry with Homura and tries to attack her, but Homura stops her and wipes her memory.

The Clara dolls pelt Homura with tomatoes, implying that Homura is deeply unhappy, though she pretends otherwise. Sayaka has a bittersweet encounter with Hitomi and Kyosuke, whose arm is healed, and Mami is no longer alone as she has Nagisa to hang out with. Madoka is now the new girl at school, having come over from America, and Homura is charged with looking after her. Madoka's memories start to return, but Homura stops her, though she is aware that Madoka will get her power back one day and that the two of them will become enemies.
