Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In order to prevent an interstellar war, Admiral Marcus ordered Kirk to take the Enterprise to the edge of the neutral zone and fire a photon torpedo at Harrison's location. Was this what Kirk told the crew when he announced their mission?

Answer: No

When they boarded the Enterprise, Spock told Kirk that he expected Harrison would be made to stand trial for the crimes he had committed, not to be 'taken out' from afar. Although Kirk was initially going to follow the orders he'd been given, by the time the Enterprise was due to depart, Kirk had come around to Spock's view and told the crew an away team would be going to retrieve Harrison.
2. Who did Kirk leave in command of the Enterprise when he left to apprehend Harrison on Kronos?

Answer: Sulu

At this point in the film, Scotty had resigned his commission. Spock accompanied Kirk along with Uhura and two security officers. Although McCoy was on the bridge, Kirk gave Sulu his first taste of command.

As the away team left the Enteprise, Sulu sent a message to Harrison and ordered him to surrender or he would use Admiral Marcus' torpedoes.
3. When the away team arrived at Kronos, Kirk piloted the ship towards a small gap between two buildings to try and lose the ship that was following them. Kirk and Spock debated whether the ship would pass through the gap. What was Spock's response when Kirk said, "I told you we'd fit."?

Answer: "I am not sure that qualifies."

Although Harrison was in an uninhabited area of Kronos, the away team's shuttle encountered a Klingon Battle Cruiser patrolling the area. This was, however, a welcome distraction for Kirk as Uhura was upset with Spock for his lack of emotion.

The gap the ship needed to pass through was quite narrow, which led to Spock's concern. Although it was still flying once it had passed through, it had scraped against the buildings on several occasions on the way.
4. The Klingons forced the away team to land on the surface before they could capture Harrison. What was Uhura's suggestion as to how they proceeded?

Answer: Try to speak to the Klingons

Uhura reasoned that she was brought along because she could speak Klingon and therefore she should be allowed to talk to them. Spock suggested to Kirk it would not be logical to incur her wrath by stopping her!
5. Did Harrison surrender to Kirk on Kronos?

Answer: Yes

Between the away team and Harrison, all the Klingons were killed. After learning that there were 72 torpedoes pointed at his location, Harrison unexpectedly surrendered to Kirk.

Kirk then tried to knock out Harrison as retribution for the death of Captain Pike, however he was unable to deliver a blow that did so.
6. What was John Harrison's real name?

Answer: Khan

In the run up to the release of "Star Trek Into Darkness", there were rumours that Benedict Cumberbatch would be playing the role of Khan, but these stories were denied. Eventually, the name of John Harrison was released to throw people off the scent. However, whilst Harrison was in the brig aboard the Enterprise, he revealed his name to be Khan.
7. What was McCoy examining whilst Kirk was speaking to Harrison?

Answer: A Tribble

The tribble was dead, but McCoy injected it with a sample of Harrison's blood to try and ascertain its effects given Harrison's superhuman strength.

Centaurian slugs were used in the 2009 film "Star Trek" by Nero to try and extract information from Captain Pike. Deep Space Nine was initially infested with Cardassian voles, which O'Brien had difficulty disposing of. Osmotic eels were used by Dr Phlox in the television series "Enterprise" to heal wounds.
8. What was the name of the ship commanded by Admiral Marcus?

Answer: USS Vengeance

USS Vengeance was designed by Khan at the request of Admiral Marcus, who believed that a war with the Klingon Empire was inevitable.

Vengeance, a Dreadnought-class starship, was significantly larger than the Enterprise, but was designed to be manned by a skeleton crew. It was severely damaged when Spock detonated Admiral Marcus' torpedoes on board.
9. Why did Admiral Marcus' ship not destroy the Enterprise?

Answer: Scotty sabotaged the ship.

Kirk tried to surrender himself and accepted responsibility for disobeying the Admiral's orders. He had hoped to spare the rest of his crew. However, Marcus told him that he had no intention of sparing his crew and beamed Carol to the Vengeance before aiming at the Enterprise. Fortunately, Scotty was able to sabotage the Vengeance before she was able to fire.
10. In "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan", Spock repaired the ship but in doing so died of radiation poisoning. In "Star Trek Into Darkness", a similar scene occurred, but how was it different?

Answer: Kirk repaired the ship and died.

This was a nice touch in the movie, which even included some of the original dialogue from "The Wrath of Khan" as well as the image of Kirk and Spock separated by glass as Kirk dies.

Spock then failed to keep his emotions in check, screaming Khan's name in the same way Kirk had done in "Star Trek II" when Khan announced he was marooning the Enterprise Captain inside Genesis.
