Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How does the crew find out Picard is planning to help the Ba'ku and defy Admiral Dougherty?

Answer: Picard uses the transporter at an odd hour.

Upon confronting Picard Data says, "Rerouting the transport grid to avoid detection was wise, sir - however, the transporter is rarely used after 0200 hours." The crew makes it clear they are not about to let Picard do this all alone. Picard accepts their help, dividing them into two teams - one to take the Enterprise out of the Briar Patch and one to go to the planet's surface.

Although Picard renounces his status as a Starfleet captain, it was impossible for him to send a message to Starfleet while still in the Briar Patch.
2. In response to Picard's plan, which crew member says, "Saddle up, lock and load"?

Answer: Data

In response to Dr. Crusher's question about what he thinks of Picard's plan, Data replies with the above quote. Although Picard plans to go alone to the surface, the crew joins in and helps out. The movie starts with Data protecting the Ba'ku from the Son'a and the Federation and it ends in the same place. Only this time everyone is on board with the insurrection.
3. Most of the leadership of the crew goes to the surface with Picard to help evacuate the Ba'ku from their village. Which two members remain behind to take the Enterprise out of the Briar Patch and inform the Federation of what is going on?

Answer: Riker and La Forge

Riker takes command of the Enterprise with La Forge at the conn (the flight controller). Here the movie splits into two simultaneous plot lines - one follows Picard and the crew on the planet and the other follows the Enterprise as it attempts to leave the Briar Patch. Ru'afo figures out what Picard and the crew are up to and tells Admiral Dougherty the Enterprise must be stopped.

At first Dougherty hesitates but finally he gives his consent for Ru'afo to send two ships to intercept the Enterprise.
4. The crew takes transport inihibitors with them to the planet surface to stop the Son'a from beaming the Ba'ku off the planet. Then the Ba'ku follow the Kelbonite deposits, which further inhibits the Son'a plans. What do the Son'a use to counteract these tactics?

Answer: Drones firing isolinear tags

Isolinear tags work like homing beacons and allow the Son'a to lock onto the target once it has hit them. Many Ba'ku are captured in this manner but most make it to the caves to hide. Once in the caves, the Son'a begin to bombard the mountains in an attempt to drive the Ba'ku out of the caves. At one point both Picard and Anij get tagged and transported to Ru'afo's flagship.
5. One of the Son'a is wounded during the chase of the Ba'ku. Dr. Crusher treats the Son'a and discovers the Son'a are genetically related to the Cardassians.

Answer: False

Dr. Crusher discovers the Son'a have the same genetics as the Ba'ku not the Cardassians. Once on Ru'afo's flagship, Picard confronts Dougherty and Ru'afo with the truth. Dougherty looks stunned by the news. Picard says to him, "You've brought the Federation into the middle of a blood feud, Admiral. The children have returned to expel their elders, just as they were once expelled. Except that Ru'afo's need for revenge has now escalated into parricide."
6. During the battle between the two Son'a ships and the Enterprise, The Son'a denote an isolytic burst causing a tear in space. What does the Enterprise do to stop this tear from spreading?

Answer: Ejects the warp core and detonates it in the tear

The Son'a employ a subspace weapon that opens a rip in space. The weapon is banned by the Second Khitomer Accords because of its unpredictability. Geordi tells Riker that the warp core is acting like a magnet pulling the tear across space. He suggests ejecting the warp core and detonating it, which may or may not work. With no real alternative Riker gives the order and Geordi informs him he has already done it.

The plan works and the tear is sealed.
7. In the battle with the Son'a ships, Riker makes a literary reference to how he wants to use the Briar Patch. What literary character does Riker reference?

Answer: Br'er Rabbit

Riker uses the analogy of Br'er Rabbit in describing how it is time to stand and fight, by using the Briar Patch to their advantage. Riker seeks out a suitable gas cloud in which to gather highly volatile metreon particles. Geordi cautions Riker that they should steer clear of the gas but Riker informs Geordi he intends to collect it and "shove it down the Son'a's throat." Geordi comments that history may recall this as the Riker Maneuver. Riker replies only if it works.
8. The Enterprise uses its Bussard collectors to gather what kind of particles to use as a weapon against the Son'a ships?

Answer: Metreon particles

After the Enterprise storage is at full capacity, Riker takes over manual control of the ship. He flies the Enterprise directly at the two Son'a ships. When the Son'a fire their weapons Riker orders the ramscoops emptied, sending the gas towards the Son'a.

The Son'a photon torpedoes detonate the cloud, destroying one of the ships and crippling the other. The Enterprise escapes from its pursuers.
9. What does Ru'afo use to kill Admiral Dougherty?

Answer: The face stretching cosmetic chair

When Admiral Dougherty learns the truth about the Son'a and the Ba'ku he tells Ru'afo the mission is over. Ru'afo flies into a rage and kills Dougherty by placing him in the face stretching chair. Dougherty tries to stop Ru'afo from killing him by saying, "If you begin the procedure while the planet's still populated, the Federation will pursue you." Ru'afo replies, "The Federation will never know what happened here." Dougherty's face is grotesquely disfigured as he dies violently.
10. The Son'a second in command, Gallatin, helps Picard stop Ru'afo. How do they accomplish this?

Answer: Beaming the Son'a bridge crew onto a fake bridge on the holoship

Throughout the movie Gallatin tries to take the more reasonable approach to situations where Ru'afo is driven by his desires. When the Ba'ku flee the village to hide in the mountains, Ru'afo wants to send assault troops to finish them off but Gallatin suggests using the isolinear tags instead. Picard sees the conflict going on inside Gallatin and uses it to get Gallatin to listen to his conscience. Gallatin finally joins forces with Picard and they beam Ru'afo and his bridge crew onto the holoship. Ru'afo quickly learns he has been tricked, setting up the final showdown between him and Picard on the Collector Array.
