Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Stone' is a movie about a motorbike gang, whose members are being killed off one by one. Which Australian city is it set in?

Answer: Sydney

It is interesting trying to pick the locations. Middle Head, Pacific Highway, the newly-opened and very scenic F3 Freeway, Forth & Clyde Hotel in Balmain (now converted to private residences). Gore Hill Cemetery which is located right door to Royal North Shore Hospital in St Leonards- an appropriate name and location, eh?
2. Who played the title role in 'Stone'?

Answer: Ken Shorter

Veteran actor, Jack Thompson, starred in another Aussie classic, 'Sunday, Too Far Away', a movie about professional sheep shearers. Shorter had a small role in that movie, too. Mel Gibson starred in 'Mad Max', a movie with several similarities to 'Stone', but which was released five years later.

Noni Hazlehurst was a longtime host of the children's show, 'Playschool'.
3. The bikie gang that featured in the movie was fictitious, and were all actors. What was the name of the gang?

Answer: GraveDiggers

The Hells Angels club provided some assistance in the funeral cortege scene and insight into the bike gang culture, but did not feature in the storyline.

The procession of bikies in the funeral scene was made up mainly of volunteers- the producers placed an ad in a bike magazine asking anyone with a large bike to join in. They expected a handful of replies, but they got 400 people!

The three wrong answers are all heavy rock bands from the 1970s and '80s.
4. The movie was the brainchild of one man. Who produced, directed and starred in 'Stone'?

Answer: Sandy Harbutt

He starred as Undertaker, the leader of the gang. Harbutt also wrote the screenplay, had a part in writing the music and recruited many of the other cast members. Not sure if he made lunch for the cast and crew, but it would not surprise me.

Veteran actors Bill Hunter and Gary McDonald had smaller roles, as barman and bike mechanic, respectively. Ron Shand played Herbert Evans in the saucy TV series 'Number 96', but was not in 'Stone'.
5. Most of the characters in 'Stone' are depicted as veterans of war. Which war?

Answer: Vietnam

Vietnam vets copped a bad reception on their return from the war, and resented the way that they were treated by 'normal' society. The vets could not find a niche in society, and many of them returned with psychological problems, drug addictions and feelings of total rejection. In real-life 1970s Australia, bikie gangs were prolific.

A quote from Undertaker sums up their philosophy- 'Your law sends young blokes to somebody else's country to fight people they know nothing about. As long as they keep on shooting them, they hang medals on you. If you don't shoot them any more, they chuck you in jail.'
6. The motorbikes that the gang members rode were all the same make. What was their bike of preference?

Answer: Kawasaki

Kawasaki loaned the film company 16 of their powerful 900cc models, and even gave them custom paint jobs. A bit of a continuity faux pas, though- all the registration numbers are in consecutive order.

Harley-Davidsons are not popular with Aussie bike gangs- they are used more by North Americans. A Vespa is an Italian motor-scooter, which no self-respecting bikie would be seen dead on.
7. Several different methods were used to kill off the gang members. Which of these was NOT used?

Answer: Poisoned beer

The car incident was very dangerous, and involved riding a bike off a 30 metre cliff into the ocean near Malabar. Stuntman Peter Armstrong's mighty leap is still acknowledged as one of the best stunts seen in Australian movie history.
8. When Stone meets the bikies for the first time, it is in the pub. Many silly things are said in pubs, but his line to the barman is hilarious. What did he say?

Answer: 'Do you sell beer here?'

Barman- 'Yes, we do.'
Stone- 'I would like to buy some.'
Barman- 'How much would you like to buy?'
Stone- 'Just a glass.'

Inane stuff, but it worked.

He then tried to join the gang, as an undercover cop. At first, he was flatly and hostilely rejected, but when the assassin started firing crossbow arrows at the pub and patrons, his police training kicked in. He saved a few lives and went after the shooter. Because of this, he was allowed to join in, with lots of conditions- ride at the back of the pack, don't interfere with anything, do not tell anyone that he is a cop, keep his hands off the bikie molls, etc.

'You talking to me?' is Robert De Niro in 'Taxi Driver' and 'How do you get sauce out of suede?' is from the very funny Aussie movie, 'The Adventures of Barry McKenzie'.
9. Towards the end of the movie, we find out who is killing off the bikies, and why. They were inadvertent witnesses to a particular event- what was the incident involved?

Answer: A political assassination

Just after the story started, the bikies were in Speaker's Corner in the Domain, a place where anyone can stand up and say their stuff. Most speakers are heckled, but in this instance, a local politician was shot by a sniper, employed by a large (unspecified) development company. The bikies fled, and the faceless men in suits started killing them off, and trying to pin the blame on them.

Following a shoot-out in the cemetery where bikies Toad and Dr Death are killed, Stone protected the assassin, to the disgust of the bikies that wanted to get revenge.
10. After the case is over, and Stone returns to his police job, the final scenes show the bikies coming into Stone's house. What do they do when they get inside?

Answer: Beat Stone up with fists and boots

Stone and his girlfriend, Amanda (played by Helen Morse), were relaxing at home when the bikies barge in. They then proceed to belt the tripe out of Stone, whilst Amanda is forced to watch. After the gang leave, Amanda tries to comfort Stone, who is covered in blood.

She tries to call Stone's boss, but he hangs up the phone saying 'No cops!'. It is not revealed whether he survived the bashing...
