Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A contract killer is sent on a series of escalating missions culminating in the discovery of an unsettling human sacrifice.

Answer: Kill List

While "Kill List" seems to start a bit more on the unassuming side as a contract killer returns to his line of work for a series of escalating jobs, it culminates with a visit to the expansive property of a member of British Parliament. What he and his partner find there is a cult, worshiping something in the woods. He's soon put into the middle of things, discovering their true motives.

"Kill List" became a bit of an underground thriller upon limited and festival release in 2011. Director Ben Wheatley later filmed the JG Ballard adaptation for "High-Rise".
2. Journalists head to a supposed cult headquarters known as Eden Parish and become a part of a horrible event leading to its dissolution.

Answer: The Sacrament

This film sees a small group of documentarians heading to Eden Parish to locate and retrieve one of their crew's family members. Arriving at the utopian community though, it becomes apparent that not everything is as it seems, leading to a tragedy on the scale of Jonestown.

Directed by Ti West and released in 2013, "The Sacrament" was made to mirror the events of Jonestown directly with a character known as Father leading as a Jim Jones-like personality. This came off the heels of West's earlier film, "The House of the Devil", which linked into the 'Satanic Panic' themes of 1980s horror.
3. A detective travels to an island inhabited by pagans to search for a missing girl.

Answer: The Wicker Man

Originally released in 1973, "The Wicker Man" was fairly well-received as a horror movie, tying in religious themes and the ominous image of a giant, burning, wicker effigy shaped like a man. Directed by Robin Hardy, the movie was originally meant to be part of a trilogy which was left unfinished when he passed away in 2016.

You may also remember the cult classic bad remake, also titled "The Wicker Man", starring Nicolas Cage-- you know, the movie with the bees stinging his face?-- which came out in 2006. That one wasn't so well-received.
4. A babysitter is asked to look after an elderly woman in an isolated country house on the night of an eclipse.

Answer: The House of the Devil

"The House of the Devil" sent strapped-for-cash college student Samantha out to the country for a quick job with a fair amount of money. While she spent a fair amount of time wandering the expansive house and keeping to herself in this slow-burn horror film, it was eventually discovered that something horrible was about to happen to her. The homeowners turned out to be cultists.

Directed by Ti West, this 2009 horror film was acclaimed by genre fans for its tension and 1980s aesthetics.
5. A young woman suffers, even after escaping a cult in Upstate New York.

Answer: Martha Marcy May Marlene

In this movie starring Elizabeth Olsen, a young woman who has many names throughout the narrative flees from a cult in the Catskills, eventually getting free and moving in with her sister. While the film revisits past events leading up to her reunion with her sister, it's apparent that the time in a cult has damaged Martha...or Marcy May...or Marlene...to a dangerous degree.

The movie was a quick indie favourite, premiering at Sundance and receiving critical acclaim in 2011. Olsen subsequently won many awards for her role, leading to her being brought on for a role in the "Captain America" and "Avengers" film series.
6. The cultists at Five Points Trinity Church lash out as their captives try to escape imprisonment.

Answer: Red State

Created as an original story by Kevin Smith, "Red State" sees two men who are drugged and captured by members of a church. In the struggle of an escape, a gunfight ensues, leading to the Department of Justice (ATF) to step in and try to subdue the cult compound on the brink of their rapture.

The movie was only moderately well-received by critics. After premiering at Sundance, Kevin Smith ended up distributing the film independently. It didn't recoup half of its budget. He went on to film "Tusk" afterwards, arguably never recovering.
7. Youngsters are motivated by 'He Who Walks Behind The Rows' in a small Nebraska town.

Answer: The Children of the Corn

Based on a Stephen King short story, the original "Children of the Corn" (1984) saw a couple arriving in Gatlin, Nebraska, a town in which the children have formed into a cult led by a malevolent deity seeking sacrifice. They find that all of the parents have been killed and that they need to escape, but it's clear that the children and their God have other ideas.

The movie spawned several sequels, the first of which, ironically, was called "The Final Sacrifice". A SyFy network remake of the movie appeared in 2009. Like the original film, it wasn't too well-received.
8. In a short sequence called 'Safe Haven', a film crew visits an Indonesian cult, meeting their fate.

Answer: V/H/S/2

Part of an anthology of short, found-footage horror films, "V/H/S/2" saw four different horror stories with different themes within its narrative. In the third of them, 'Safe Haven', a crew of four heads to Indonesia to investigate a mysterious cult only to discover that they're ready for their time of reckoning. This leads to a graphic and supernatural sequence culminating in the arrival of a demon spawn.

"V/H/S/2" saw many horror directors enter the fold, but 'Safe Haven' was directed by Timo Tjahjanto and Gareth Huw Evans, the latter of whom directed "The Raid".
9. A woman is pursued by a cult in order to give birth to the Antichrist.

Answer: Rosemary's Baby

This film saw Mia Farrow as Rosemary as she, moving into a new apartment with her husband, discovered that something was seriously wrong with the other tenants of her building. What she didn't know (until it was too late) that they anticipated using her as a vessel to birth the son of Satan.

Directed by Roman Polanski, "Rosemary's Baby" was originally based on a novel by Ira Levin. One of the most famous horror movies of the 1960s, it has since been preserved by the U.S. National Film Registry. It was nominated for two Oscars, winning one.
10. A cult performs violent acts to seek transcendence and knowledge of what waits on the other side, doing so from beneath a French country house.

Answer: Martyrs

In this film, a family is brutally murdered by a young woman, Lucie, and her friend, Anna, discovers what she's done. Despite all efforts to save her, Lucie commits suicide without giving concrete answers, and Anna discovers that her friend may have been right all along. This leads to the uncovering of the chambers in the basement and a cult bent on committing horrible perversions on the human body in seeking euphoric transcendence.

Part of a wave of extreme French body horror films, "Martyrs" released in 2008, debuting at Cannes. It became well-known in horror circles for its graphic and unrelenting approach to horror. A poorly-received American remake was released in 2015.
