Elvis's character, Clint Reno, was the youngest pf four brothers. He stayed home to care for their mother while the other three went off to fight for the Confederacy in the Civil War. The family got word that oldest brother Vance was killed, which turned out to be false. Clint married Vance's girlfriend, creating family problems when Vance returned. Elvis's character actually died from a gunshot wound at the end. Fearing serious backlash from Elvis fans an alternative ending was shot which spared the character, but it was never used.

Instead, an apparition of Elvis appears, singing the title song.
