Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Not bad looking nor a shabby singer herself, this lovely gal holds the distinction of playing the lead opposite Elvis (in the movies) the most times. Her own record, "Johnny Angel", went to the top of the charts in 1962. Who is she?

Answer: Shelley Fabares

Shelley Fabares was in three movies with Elvis. Those are: "Girl Happy" (1965), "Spinout" (1966) and "Clambake" (1967). Of course, the rumor mill was active when the two stars were filmed together but it was (apparently) never more than rumor. Shelley Fabares married another star - this one from TV - Mike Farrell in 1984.
2. After playing "second fiddle" to Shelley Fabares in the movie "Girl Happy" (1965) this perky gal won the co-star, leading lady role in Elvis's film, "Harum Scarum" (1965). Who is she?

Answer: Mary Ann Mobley

Mary Ann Mobley was middle eastern royalty in "Harum Scarum" (1965). And, she had a fabulously royal sounding name - well, for 1965, that is. She was Princess Shalimar. Surely, one of the most beautiful damsels in distress ever to be saved by a not-so-conventional hero. After starring with Elvis, Mobley was "second fiddle" again in 1966 - this time to Janet Leigh in "Three On A Couch".
3. Even the outfits of a river boat performer, that is, dance hall girl afloat, could not disguise the beautiful blonde co-star (with Elvis) in "Frankie and Johnny" (1966). Who is this lovely gal who was known to be more attracted to "critters" than men?

Answer: Donna Douglas

Douglas won the part of Frankie with very little movie experience. She had appeared in "Li'l Abner" (1959) and "Lover Come Back" (1961) but "Frankie and Johnny" (1966) was her most prominent movie role. And, Donna Douglas was a lovely choice as Frankie, playing opposite Elvis as Johnny.

The two actors admittedly had much in common and became close friends. Both seemed to have a deep sense of the ethereal and often shared reading materials with each other.
4. This Hollywood starlet was convincing as a native Hawaiian (according to the movie script her character is "half-Hawaiian, half-French") and the heart throb of Elvis in the movie that provided him with his best selling soundtrack. Who starred opposite Elvis in "Blue Hawaii" (1961)?

Answer: Joan Blackman

Even though Joan Blackman appeared with Elvis Presley in two films, "Blue Hawaii" (1961) and "Kid Galahad" (1962), she was universally better known as a regular cast of the prime time television soap opera, "Peyton Place" (American TV - 1964-1969). "Blue Hawaii" contained the popular song by Elvis, "Can't Help Falling In Love," which would become the closing song for his concerts in the 1970s.
5. Quite possibly better known for her dancing in movies than her acting in them, who was the lovely and talented dancer who appeared with Elvis in "G.I. Blues" (1960)?

Answer: Juliet Prowse

Juliet Prowse was indeed a talented dancer. Remember "the girl who offended Krushchev" media hype about her dance in "Can-Can" (1960)? Just a couple of years after she filmed "G.I. Blues" (1960), she was engaged to be married to none other than Frank Sinatra.

It would not be a very long engagement, though. Prowse did remove her dancing shoes to play a disc jockey in the (weird, if not disturbing) "Who Killed Teddy Bear" (1965) with Sal Mineo.
6. This dynamic actress would star opposite of Elvis Presley in his most successful box office movie, "Viva Las Vegas" (1964). Was it due to her ability to emulate Elvis with those hip-shaking dance moves? Who was this ball of fire?

Answer: Ann-Margaret

By many accounts Ann-Margaret was said to be the favorite co-star of Elvis. Their chemistry in the film "Viva Las Vegas" (1964) was undeniable. Ann-Margaret had already appeared in another musical, "Bye Bye Birdie" (1963) before starring with Elvis. She would later prove herself a worthy actress away from the musicals with roles in such films as "Carnal Knowledge" (1971), "I Ought To Be In Pictures" (1982) and "Grumpy Old Men" (1993).
7. During the 1960s, the woman who co-starred with Elvis in "Girls! Girls! Girls!" (1962) was one of the most photographed women in the world. She had previously appeared opposite Bing Crosby in "Say One For Me" (1959) - though her role was small in that film. Who was this popular co-star?

Answer: Stella Stevens

Stella was not particularly in demand as a singer but in the movie, "Girls! Girls! Girls!" (1962), her character was a night club singer. This gave her the opportunity to sing (at least parts of) three songs with Elvis. And, she had appeared in "Li'l Abner" (1959) - with another Elvis co-star, Donna Douglas.

She would also have a starring role in the movie "The Nutty Professor" (1963) opposite Jerry Lewis.
8. Who was the beautiful co-star of the Elvis Presley movie, "Speedway" (1968)?

Answer: Nancy Sinatra

Though her voice was heard singing songs for the movies "You Only Live Twice" (1967) and "Kill Bill Vol. 1" (2003), "Speedway" (1968) with Elvis was Nancy Sinatra's last starring role for at least four decades. Before "Speedway" (1968), Nancy had appeared in the comedy films, "The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini" (1966) and "The Last of the Secret Agents?" (1966).
9. In the movie "Flaming Star" (1960) Elvis Presley dies - but NOT where we the viewing audience can watch his death. Who is the beautiful blonde cowgirl paired with Elvis in this movie? (Hint: We may have expected her in "Harum Scarum" (1965) instead, since we came to recognize her in a Jeannie costume.)

Answer: Barbara Eden

Barbara Eden's character is the girlfriend of Elvis Presley's character in "Flaming Star" (1960). Both were credited with excellent performances in this western drama. Although NEITHER had been the first choice for their roles. The role of the son of a white father and a Native American mother went to Elvis only after Marlon Brando declined it. Barbara Steele had been consigned for Eden's role before Eden was finally given the part. Extremely well known for her role on TV as "Jeannie", Eden also appeared in the movies: "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" (1961), "Five Weeks in a Balloon" (1962) and "Harper Valley PTA" (1978).
10. The last film that Elvis Presley would make (other than documentaries) was "Change of Habit" (1969). What vivacious brunette was his love interest in this film?

Answer: Mary Tyler Moore

Mary Tyler Moore must have been a natural choice to play a nun. Even relatively new to show business in the late 1960s, Moore was already known as much for her moral standards as she was her beauty and personality. "Change of Habit" (1969) had been targeted as a Mary Tyler Moore film. Hard to believe The King was an afterthought. Nonetheless, audiences enjoyed it enough for it to do rather well at the box office.

It would be almost 11 years later when Mary Tyler Moore would get the Oscar nomination for her role in "Ordinary People" (1980).
