Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Baby Take Me In Your Arms" went Top 40 in the winter of 1970 for this U.K. artist. What name did he record under?

Answer: Jefferson

Billboard number 23, February 14, 1970. Jefferson (Geoff Turton) was a member of Britain's Rockin Berries from 1961-1968. After leaving the group he embarked on a solo career, and had some minor success in Europe before this song was released. Ironically, this song was not a hit in the U.K.
2. February of 1971 saw "Sweet Mary" make the Top 10 for this flash in the pan group. Who were they?

Answer: Wadsworth Mansion

Billboard number seven, February 27, 1971. From Providence, Rhode Island, this was their only attempt at Top 40 success. They made one album, and disappeared.
3. "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" started 1989 off by hitting the Top 20 for this group. Who were they?

Answer: Hillside Singers

Billboard number 13, January 15, 1972. This song was actually a re-write of the famous "I'd Like To Buy The World A Coke" ad campaign of the early 70s. The song was written expressly for the ad, and it was so successful that it was re-written and recorded for airplay. The New Seekers were originally asked to record the ad, and turned it down, but covered the re-write later on.
4. In early 1973, "Dancin' In The Moonlight" shot into the Top 20 for this group. Who were dancin'?

Answer: King Harvest

Billboard number 13, February 24, 1973. With an ever fluctuating group of musicians, King Harvest was able to crank out this hit that year. One of the rotating members of the group was drummer Wells Kelly, who later went on to form the band Orleans who had a major hit with "Still The One".
5. The anthem "Rock On" went Top 5 in 1974 for this British pop star. Who was he?

Answer: David Essex

Billboard number five, March 9, 1974. Born in London in 1947, Essex has had a long career in the U.K. with a number of hits, and also had annexed an acting career to his resume. He graced the stage in such shows as "Evita", and "Mutiny", while continuing to record overseas.
6. The snappy tune "Doctor's Orders" was a Top 10 hit in 1975 for this lady. What was her name?

Answer: Carol Douglas

Billboard number 11, February 8, 1975. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1948, Carol comes from a musical family. Her cousin was the late Sam Cooke. She actually was on the game show "Name That Tune" at age 10, and WON! She also toured as a singer with "The Chantels" when they were on the oldies circuit in the 70s.

After this song, she did have some success on the disco charts, but with the death of disco, her career waned.
7. The mid 70s saw a number of television theme songs zoom up the pop charts. One of them was the theme from "Welcome Back Kotter" in 1976. Which act was responsible for this one?

Answer: John Sebastian

Billboard number one, May 8, 1976. Pretty easy to explain this one. John Sebastian had major success in the 60s as the lead singer of the highly successful Lovin Spoonful and penned such hits as "Do You Believe in Magic", and sang lead on "Daydream" and "Summer In The City" among others. He also wrote this tune during his solo career.
8. This song went to the top of the charts in 1977 for an actor turned singer. "Don't Give Up On Us" was a smash for whom?

Answer: David Soul

Billboard number one, April 9, 1977. "Hutch" has appeared on many TV shows including "I Dream of Jeanie", "Gunsmoke", "Star Trek", and "Cannon", among others, and also was in the movie "Magnum Force" with Clint Eastwood. His musical career continued in the UK where he scored another number one hit with "Silver Lady" and a number two hit with "Going In With My Eyes Open".

These songs could not crack the Top 50 on the U.S. charts. Go figure?
9. "Emotion" was a Top 5 hit in 1978. Who sang the the lead vocals?

Answer: Samantha Sang

Billboard number three, March 18, 1978. Yes, Samantha Sang, but the BeeGees wrote, and sang backup. I wonder if that could be the reason this was her only Top 40 hit. She did have some minor success in her native Australia in the late 60s and early 70s, but nothing like this song.
10. This instrumental went Top 5 in 1979. Who recorded the "Music Box Dancer"?

Answer: Frank Mills

Billboard number three, May 5, 1979. He was born in Quebec in 1942, and is a noted Canadian pianist. He played piano for The Bells from 1970 through 1972, and then went solo. This song was actually a B-Side for another recording, and when mistakenly played by a Canadian DJ, it got a good response, and eventually was released as a single.
