Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This remake of the classic Animals tune "House Of the Rising Sun" made it to the Top 10 in the spring of 1970. Who recorded it?

Answer: Frijid Pink

Billboard number seven, April 4, 1970. A Detroit rock band, formed in 1967, they toured Michigan in the late 60s with marginal success. This song was recorded during a studio session in late 1969 and was really never intended to be the hit that it was.

However, the group became such a local success in the Detroit area, that during some of their shows, they needed an opening act. Who, you ask? Well of course, Led Zeppelin!
2. This catchy novelty song shot to the Top 10 in the spring of 1971. "Chick A Boom (Don't Ya Jes' Love It)" was a hit for whom?

Answer: Daddy Dewdrop

Billboard number nine, May 8, 1971. This was a novelty song by a studio group, led by Richard Monda of Cleveland. The original song was written for a cartoon called "Sabrina and the Groovie Goolies" by Monda, and was modified to its release format by the record company he was working with.
3. This tune with a Latin flare hit the Top 20 in 1972. Who were the folks who recorded "Suavecito"?

Answer: Malo

Billboard number 18, May 6, 1972. No wonder this group had a link to Latin music. The group was led by Jorge Santana, the brother of Carlos. They quickly split up after this song, though.
4. Who was in the "Right Place Wrong Time" in 1973?

Answer: Dr. John

Billboard number nine, June 30, 1973. Real name Malcolm John Rebennack, who comes to us from New Orleans. He has recorded numerous albums and songs, but none had the mainstream success that he had with this one.
5. Late summer 1973 brought us a catchy tune about fun in the sun. Which group was responsible for the classic "Beach Baby" that year?

Answer: First Class

Billboard number four, October 5, 1973. Another studio creation, this song was recorded in London in 1974 by singer/songwriter John Carter, and his wife Jill Shakespeare. They got the help of Tony Burrows, who was a studio musician and singer who created a number of "groups" during that period (See Edison Lighthouse, The Pipkins, The Brotherhood of Man, and White Plains). With his help this song flourished, but no others followed with as much success.

The song did have a 60s Beach Boys type sound, which undoubtedly helped its success in the U.S.
6. 1975 saw this Top five song hit the charts in mid-summer. The strong hit "Magic" was recorded by whom?

Answer: Pilot

Billboard number five, July 12, 1975. The group was formed in Scotland, by a couple of former members of The Bay City Rollers. This song was their only Top 40 success in the U.S., although they did have a subsequent number one in the U.K. called "January". Some members later went on to become parts of The Allan Parsons Project and 10cc.
7. "The Boys Are Back In Town" shot into the Top 20 in 1976 for this group. Name them.

Answer: Thin Lizzy

Billboard number 12, July 24, 1976. An Irish rock band, formed in Dublin in 1969, the group has some commercial album success even though this was their only Top 40 entry in the US. The album the song comes from is called "Jailbreak" and is listed on Rolling Stone's "Top 500 Albums of All Time".
8. This soppy tune was a number one hit for a long stretch of late summer and early fall in 1977. Which of these ladies recorded "You Light Up My Life" that year?

Answer: Debby Boone

Billboard number one, October 15, 1977. Debby was the daughter of Pat Boone who was a musical star of the late 50s. The song stayed at number one for 10 weeks, and was the biggest hit of the 70s on Billboard's Hot 100 charts. Debby also won a Grammy for this tune.

However, family history is no guarantee for success, and she never hit the Top 40 again. She eventually became a popular singer of Christian music.
9. The romantic tune "Magnet and Steel" was a Top 10 hit in the summer of 1978. Who sang it?

Answer: Walter Egan

Billboard number eight, August 26, 1978. Egan is from Jamaica, New York. This tune was produced by Lindsey Buckingham, of Fleetwood Mac.
10. This up tempo song was a Top 20 hit in the late summer of 1979. "Cruel To Be Kind" made it to the charts for which singer?
