Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1970 saw "Ride Captain Ride" soar into the Top 10. Which group was responsible for the ride?

Answer: Blues Image

Billboard number four, July 11, 1970. This was a critically acclaimed band, formed in 1966 in Tampa Florida. They moved to Miami in 1968 and were a house band for a club called "Thee Image". Jimi Hendrix, in an interview, said they were one of the best up and coming rock bands around. I guess everyone can make a mistake.

However, after this song, and their subsequent breakup later in 1970, the members went on to become parts of such groups as Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, and Three Dog Night, and others played with Alice Cooper and Crosby Stills and Nash. Maybe Hendrix was right, in an individual sort of way.
2. 1970 also saw "O-o-h Child" become a Top 10 hit for this soulful group. Name them.

Answer: Five Stairsteps

Billboard number eight, July 18, 1970. A soul group formed in Chicago, they were all brothers and sisters from one big family. The fascinating fact about this one hit wonder is that they had 18 charting hits in the Top 100 in the years 1966 through 1972, and this was the only one to crack the Top 40.
Not a good percentage!
3. "Gimme Dat Ding" was the title of this wonder which made the Top 10 in 1970 for this so-called group. What name did they record under?

Answer: The Pipkins

Billboard number nine, July 18, 1970. Tony Burrows again. Mr. Burrows was a studio musician, (which you may have learned from earlier quizzes), and was responsible for not only this group, but also Edison Lighthouse, White Plains, The Brotherhood of Man, and First Class, and had various Top 40 hits under those monickers during the 70's.
4. The Beatles hit, "Here Comes The Sun" was covered in 1971 by this artist who appeared at the original Woodstock. Name the artist.

Answer: Richie Havens

Billboard number 16, May 22, 1971. Havens was born in Brooklyn and made his name locally in the the late 60's. Woodstock brought him to national prominence. He has done voice-overs, and had cameos in some movies over the last 20 years. He also played for then President Bill Clinton in 1993.
5. 1972 saw the smash "Hold Your Head Up" rise into the Top 10. Who sang?

Answer: Argent

Billboard number five, August 26, 1972. This was a Brtish band, formed in the 1969 by Rod Argent, a former member of The Zombies. This was their only hit, and they disbanded in 1976.
6. September 1972 saw a Top 20 hit called "Beautiful Sunday" hit the charts. Who loved Sunday?

Answer: Daniel Boone

Billboard number 15, September 16, 1972. Boone was from Birmingham, England and was born as Peter Stirling. He had a brief career releasing only 3 songs.
7. "Popcorn" shot into the Top 10 in 1972 for this artist. Who popped this song onto the charts?

Answer: Hot Butter

Billboard number nine, October 21, 1972. This was a instumental cover band formed by the late Stan Free. He had done studio work for The Monkees and The Association during the late 60's. Free was one of the first to use a Moog Synthesiser in pop music, and scored with this hit. The group disbanded in 1978. Free passed away in 1995 at age 73.
8. 1978 saw "Falling" make the Top 20 for this duo. What name did they use?

Answer: LeBlanc and Carr

Billboard number 13, April 1, 1978. Lenny LeBlanc grew up in Daytona Beach, Florida. At the encouragement of good friend Pete Carr, Lenny moved to Muscle Shoals, Alabama to work with him as a background singer for artists such as Hnak Williams Jr., Crystal Gayle, Ricky Skaggs and Roy Orbison. LeBlanc's brief solo career began in 1975, and this song was recorded as a demo. Later in 1980, LeBlanc became a born again Christian, and has recorded Christian themed music since then.
9. The "Werewolves Of London" were howling on the charts and went Top 40 during the spring of 1978. Who made them howl?

Answer: Warren Zevon

Billboard number 12, May 13, 1978. Zevon was born in 1947, in Chicago. This list of musicians he worked with or wrote for is too numerous to put in this brief summary. This song was his only Top 40 success. He received a posthumous Grammy for his album titled "The Wind" which was released in August 2003, about two weeks before he passed away due to mesothelioma.
10. Yes, disco was still around in 1979 as evidenced by this Top 20 hit. Who sang "Come To Me"?

Answer: France Joli

Billboard number 15, November 17, 1979. Born in Montreal, Canada, she saved the best for first. This was her only Top 40 hit and it came on her very first try, although she did have other releases during the 80's and into the 90's but due to the decline in the popularity of disco, she never acheived anything like her initial success again.
