Warren Zevon, an American, co-wrote this song with LeRoy Marinell and Waddy Wachtel and recorded it on his 1978 album, "Excitable Boy". It reached no. 21 on the American Top 40 charts in 1978.

'The Ballad of Lucy Jordan' was written by the well known American poet Shel Silverstein for Dr Hook who recorded it in 1975. Shel Silverstein wrote a lot of lyrics for Dr Hook songs, including the lyrics to 'Sylvia's Mother'. The Dr Hook version of the song didn't chart at all, but Marianne Faithfull's version reached no.48 in the UK charts, no.18 in Australia and entered the top 10 in Switzerland, Austria and Germany.
