Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song, the third of five consecutive US Number One Billboard hits by a popular female group, became the first US Number One of 1965 in January by knocking "I Feel Fine" by the Beatles from the top of the charts?

Answer: Come See About Me

"Come See About Me" followed "Where Did Our Love Go" and "Baby Love" as the third of a dozen Number One singles by The Supremes between 1964 and 1989. It was also the third of five consecutive Number One hits by the group. The song topped the Billboard charts in December of 1964 but was toppled by "I Feel Fine". It regained the top slot on January 16th, 1965, for a week becoming the first US Number One for the year.
The hit song was composed by the Motown songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. The Supremes released a Number 95 single in 1962 titled "Your Heart Belongs to Me" and followed with five other unsuccessful singles before "Where Did Our Love Go" began their string of hits.
"Chapel Of Love" by The Dixie Cups came out in the Summer of 1964. "Leader Of The Pack" by The Shangri-Las was also a 1964 release. "Nowhere to Run" by Martha and the Vandellas reached Number Eight in 1965.
2. Which town is the title of the US Billboard Number One song the first week of 1960?

Answer: El Paso

"El Paso" was released as a single from Marty Robbins' 1959 "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" album. In January 1960 it topped the US Pop Charts and was a top hit on the Country charts as well. Jim Glaser and Bobby Sykes of the Glaser Brothers provided the vocal harmonies and the Spanish style guitar was done by Grady Martin.
Martin David Robinson began a successful run on the US Country charts in 1952 with "I'll Go On Alone" and he reached Number Two on the Pop Charts in 1957 with "A White Sport Coat". While Marty had several chart-toppers on the Country charts, "El Paso" would be his only US Number One single on the Pop Charts. Robbins passed in 1982 at the age of 57.
"The Battle of New Orleans" by Johnny Horton topped the charts in May, 1959. Freddy Cannon took "Tallahassee Lassie" to Number Six in 1959 and "Kansas City" by Wilbert Harrison also topped the charts in 1959.
3. Which song by The Buckinghams was the first song to reach Number One on the US Billboard charts in 1967?

Answer: Kind of A Drag

Jim Holvay of The Mob composed "Kind of A Drag". In February the song knocked "I'm A Believer" from it's seven week run at the top of the Billboard charts that began in December, 1966.
The Buckinghams formed the previous year as The Pulsations. They became the house band on Chicago's WGN-TV musical variety show "All-Time Hits". Because the British Invasion was still going strong the show's producers suggested the band adopt a name capturing a British style and they chose The Buckinghams after Chicago's Buckingham Fountain.
After a couple of unsuccessful cover songs "Kind of A Drag" topped the charts for two weeks. They followed with Top Forty singles including "Susan", "Don't You Care" "Hey Baby (They're Playing Our Song)" and "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy". The band split up 1970 but reformed ten years later.
"Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie" was recorded by Jay and The Techniques. The Tremeloes released "Silence Is Golden" in 1967 and "A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You" was a release from The Monkees.
4. Which cover tune topped the US Billboard charts on January 4, 1975?

Answer: Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds

The Beatles were experimenting with Psychedelic sounds when they recorded "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" for the 1967 "Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" album. George Harrison played a tamboura and ran his guitar through a Leslie speaker during the recording. Later in 1967 John Fred and his Playboy Band had a hit with a parody of the song titled "Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)".
John Lennon played guitar in the 1974 recording by Elton John using the name Dr. Winston O'Boogie. He also provided backing vocals. The single went to Number one for two weeks in January, 1975. The flip-side was another John Lennon tune titled "One Day (At a Time)".
Tony Orlando and Dawn's cover of "Cupid" reached Number 22 in 1976. The Stampeders' version of Ray Charles' "Hit the Road Jack" made the Top Forty in 1976. Blue Swede's rendition of B J Thomas' "Hooked On A Feeling" was a hit in 1974.
5. "At the Hop" topped the US Billboard charts on January 6th 1958. The recording was by Danny and the____________________.

Answer: Juniors

"At the Hop" by Danny and the Juniors was released in the Fall of 1957 but didn't top the Billboard charts until the beginning of 1958. Danny and the Juniors were known as The Juvenairs when Artie Singer, David White and John Medora composed the song originally titled "Do the Bop". Dick Clark suggested they change the title to "At the Hop" and the band changed the title of the song as well as their name before releasing "At the Hop" as a single.
Danny Rapp fronted the Philadelphia based group. They also had a hit with "Rock and Roll is Here to Stay".
"At the Hop" was covered by Sha Na Na at the 1969 Woodstock Festival and was also featured in the film "American Graffiti" (1973).
6. "Saturday Night" by The Bay City Rollers topped the US Billboard Charts January 3rd, 1976. Where did the group form?

Answer: Edinburgh, Scotland

The Bay City Rollers called themselves The Saxons when they formed in the mid-sixties in Edinburgh, Scotland. They changed their name after throwing a dart at a map of the US that landed near Bay City. The band signed with Bell Records and released a version of the Gentry's 1965 hit "Keep On Dancing". Jonathan King produced the recording and added background vocals. King had a 1965 hit titled "Everyone's Gone to the Moon".
The group gained popularity in the UK but when they originally released "Saturday Night" in 1973 with Nobby Clark doing lead vocals it wasn't a success. When they re-released it featuring Les McKeown on lead vocals it topped the US charts in 1976.
The band went through several personnel changes through the late seventies and changed their name to The Rollers.
7. On January 1st, 1966, the first of three Number One Billboard singles by Simon and Garfunkel topped the US Billboard charts. Which single was it?

Answer: The Sound of Silence

"The Sound of Silence" was recorded on Simon and Garfunkel's debut 1964 Acoustic Folk album, "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M". The album was not successful and the duo went their separate ways. Paul went to England and Art returned to college. "The Sound of Silence" began getting airplay in the Boston area and their label, Columbia, decided to do a remix of "The Sound of Silence" and other tracks adding electric instruments.

The album was titled "Sounds of Silence". The remixed single topped the charts the first week of January, 1966.

It battled with the Beatles' "We Can Work It Out" for the top spot throughout January. "Homeward Bound" made it to Number Five in 1966. "Mrs. Robinson" topped the charts in 1968. "Bridge over Troubled Water" was a 1970 chart topper.
8. When "You're So Vain" topped the US Billboard charts on January 6, 1973, it became Carly Simon's first Number One single.

Answer: True

In 1971 Carly's "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" made it to Number Ten and "Anticipation" reached Number 13. When "You're So Vain" was released as a single from Carly's 1972 "No Secrets" LP it topped the Billboard charts in the US and several other countries.
Bronx, New York, native Carly Simon was born into a musical family. Her father played piano and her mother was a singer. In 1964 she and her sister released the "Meet The Simon Sisters" album on Kapp Records. After a second album Lucy got married and in 1971 Carly released her debut Elektra Records album simply titled "Carly Simon".
When "You're So Vain" was released it became Carly's first Number One single and the "No Secrets" LP went to Number One on the album charts. Grammy nominations for "You're So Vain" included Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Carly continued to release Top Forty singles and in 1977 she had a Number Two hit with "Nobody Does It Better" from the 1977 movie "The Spy Who Loved Me".
9. "Like a Virgin" topped the US Billboard charts in December 1984 and wasn't taken from that spot until February, 1985. Which band's only US Number One single hit knocked Madonna off the top spot becoming the first Number One in 1985?

Answer: Foreigner-"I Want to Know What Love Is"

"I Want to Know What Love Is" from Foreigner's "Agent Provocateur" album was the band's only US Billboard Number One hit in the twentieth century. The group charted several hits since "Feels Like the First Time" reached Number Four in 1977. In 1978 "Double Vision" reached Number Two as did "Waiting for a Girl Like You" in 1981.
Foreigner used the name Trigger when they recorded their first demos. When a record label learned the name was taken the band opted to change their name to Foreigner and began recording their first album in 1976.

Bolton released the song as a single from his "Soul Provider" album. It was Bolton's first chart-topper and also earned him a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
Connecticut native Bolton released his first album using his family name Bolotin.
