3. The back, ribs and necks of violins and other string instruments are made with the wood of which tree, known for its foliage and other "sweet" properties?

Answer: maple

Maple wood is considered a "tonewood" - meaning that it carries sound waves well, which makes it a suitable choice in the construction of musical instruments (especially strings and woodwinds). Maple is traditionally used for the backs, sides (also known as ribs), and usually also for the necks of instruments of the violin family; the soundboard (or top) of a violin is made of spruce. Maple is not only used for acoustic string instruments, but also for the necks of electric guitars. Woodwind instruments, especially bassoons, are also often made of maple. Oak and beech are occasionally used in the making of drums, while ebony is also an important tonewood, though nowadays restricted to smaller items, such as piano keys or violin fingerboards.
