Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the start of my convoluted journey, this was a track that was easy for me to pick so I think it only fair that I should make the first question an easy 'giveaway'. Led Zeppelin released an album in 1971, known variously as 'Untitled', 'Led Zeppelin 4' or 'The Four Symbols'. One of the tracks is one of the most well known rock tracks ever. It features 'A lady', 'A store', 'A sign' and, of course, the eponymous '_________ to Heaven'. What is the missing word?

Answer: Stairway

The fourth album by Led Zeppelin, officially, has no title (although it is refered to as either 'The Fourth Album' or 'The Four Symbols' in the Atlantic record catalogue).

'Stairway To Heaven' is probably one of the most well known Rock tracks ever. The track was never officially released as a single in the US - Atlantic did release a number of promotional copies - despite this the track was one of the most requested songs on radio in the US in the 1970s.

*Useless information* With sales of over 111 million albums in the USA and with each of their nine studio albums reaching the Billboard top ten, Led Zeppelin are ranked as the second best selling band in the US.

*Bonus Useless Information* The band first played together under the name The New Yardbirds. Jimmy Page was a member of the original Yardbirds when they disbanded in 1968. Due to contractual obligations (A series of concerts in Scandinavia) being placed on The Yardbirds the remaining members of the band allowed Jimmy Page to use the name to complete the tour.
2. Could there possibly be a connection between Michael Jackson and the Cranberries? Of course there is! The main protagonists of a famous 1982 video / song by Michael Jackson were the title of a track by The Cranberries. What song was this?

Answer: Zombie

'Zombie' was one of the most successful singles by The Cranberries; it reached number 14 in the UK charts, number one on the US alternative charts and was a top ten hit on many other charts around the world.
Michael Jackson released one of the most successful albums of all time in 1982. The video for 'Thriller' featured Michael as a zombie.

*Useless Information* 'Zombie' was awarded the 'MTV Europe Music Award' for the best song in 1995.
3. 'So,- so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, Blue skies from pain. Can you tell a green field From a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil? Do you think you can tell?' This is the first verse from the title track of the ninth album by Pink Floyd, Can you tell me, what is the album title?

Answer: Wish you Were Here

'Wish You Were Here' was the ninth album released by Pink Floyd and includes such fantastic tracks as 'Have a Cigar', 'Welcome to the Machine' and the song which many people believe to be the band's 'signature tune', 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond'.

*Useless Information* The intro to 'Wish You Were Here' (The track not the album) consists of a radio being tuned through the AM dial until it reaches a radio station which is playing Tchaikovsky's fourth Symphony' which appears to fade into the start of the song.
The radio used for this was David Gilmour's car radio.
4. We've got to 1976 and one of the top bands in the world (or at least in this incarnation) Fleetwood Mac. I'm currently listening to one of my favourite tracks from one of their greatest albums. 'Go Your Own Way' was released as a single in 1976 and was taken from an album that was released in 1977. What album was this?

Answer: Rumours

'The Chain', 'Dreams', 'Second Hand News' and, of course, 'Go Your Own Way' all go to make 'Rumours' one of the greatest Fleetwood Mac albums of all time - Well that's my opinion for what it's worth.

*Useless Information* The track was written by Lindsey Buckingham and encapsulates the mood prevalent in the band at the time.
Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks had just split up, Mick Fleetwood was having domestic problems and Christine and John Mcvie had just divorced after eight years of marriage and were barely talking to each other.
5. 1975 and a world wide hit for this group. 'I'm Not in Love' reached number one in the UK, number two in the US and was top ten around the rest of the world. Which group sang this poignant little ditty?

Answer: 10cc

The most successful recording by 10cc was 'I'm Not In Love'. The song tells the story of a man who (presumably) has been left by his girlfriend and is now denying that he loved her anyway.
'I keep your picture upon the wall,
It hides a messy stain that's lying there.'

*Useless Information* The lyrics on 'I'm Not in Love' include the lines 'Be quiet, Big boys don't cry... Big boys don't cry.' These words were spoken by the receptionist at Strawberry Studios where the band recorded the song.
6. I've found my way to 1978 and have discovered 'Mr Blue Sky' a track by a British group mainly consisting of: Jeff Lynne Bev Bevan Richard Tandy This track topped out at number seven in the UK but only reached 37 on the Billboard charts; who were they?

Answer: Electric Light Orchestra

'Mr Blue Sky' reached the number six spot in the UK and number 37 on the Billboard charts in 1978. Jeff Lynne - the composer - claims that he wrote the song after locking himself away in a Swiss chalet for two cold, misty weeks ... one day the sun broke through the clouds and he wrote the song.

*Useless Information* 'Mr Blue Sky' was the last track on side three of the group's 'Out Of The Blue' album, the last words spoken on the track are extremely 'vocoded' but are 'Please turn me over'.

*Bonus Useless Information* ELO hold the record in the US for having the most top 40 hits of any band WITHOUT ever reaching the number one spot.
7. In the 1970s the BBC broadcast a Sit-Com set in India called 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum'. Two of the stars, Windsor Davies and Don Estelle, released a record which reached number one in the UK. The song was 'Whispering Grass' which was originally a number ten US hit for who in 1940?

Answer: The Inkspots

'It Ain't Half Hot Mum' was the continuing story of an army concert party in British India at the end of the second world war.
Windsor Davies played the Sergeant Major (who didn't want to be in charge of a 'concert party') and Don Estelle was one of the concert party (at 4'9" he was obviously called 'Lofty')

Don Estelle had an amazing Tenor voice and 'Whispering Grass' was the perfect vehicle for this. With Windsor Davies commenting as the song progressed ('Sing Up Lofty' etc.) it was one of the top selling comedy records in June 1975.

The Ink Spots were an American group that were very successful in the 1930s/1940s having a number of top ten hits.
8. I'm really starting to lose my way now. I'm back in 1937 and listening to a song from 'Way Out West', a film starring Laurel and Hardy. In this film the pair sing a duet, 'The Trail of the Lonesome Pine', a song about their love for a girl called June who lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains. My question is, according to the song, where are the Blue Ridge Mountains in the USA?

Answer: Virginia

The song was originally written in 1913 and finally hit the UK charts in 1975.

The Blue Ridge Mountains stretch across the USA from Georgia to Pennsylvania but the song states that the mountain is in Virginia.

'Way Out West' was released in 1937 and featured two songs, 'At The Ball, That's All' which was sung by The Avalon Boys with a dance routine performed by Laurel and Hardy, and 'The Trail of the Lonesome Pine' which features the pair singing with Stan Laurel providing the laughs by singing in a bass voice and then a high pitched voice.
9. How did I get so lost? According to Keith Mitchell in his number five UK hit in 1980, who led the band of brave animals who confronted, and defeated, 'Hissing Sid'? (The rest of these animals consisted of: Timid Toad, Reckless Rat, Artful Owl and Batty Bat)

Answer: Captain Beaky

What can anyone say about this recording?

Originally released as part of an album collection in 1977, it relates the tale of a group of woodland animals attempting to rid the wood of Hissing Sid, a dangerous snake.

The original story of Captain Beaky was a collection of poetry written by Jeremy Lloyd - more well known as a sit-com writer in the UK - this was set to music and sung / recited by a number of celebrities including Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe, Twiggy, Petula Clark etc..

*Useless Information* 'Hissing Sid is Innocent' became a popular catch-phrase in the UK in the eighties and appeared written on walls, on bumper stickers, T shirts and many other places.
10. And somehow I have finished up with this little ditty from 1962; sung by Bernard Cribbins, it tells the story of a group of workmen trying to remove a piano from a room on the upper storey of a building. What is the name of this comedy record?

Answer: Right Said Fred

'Right Said Fred' (what was I thinking of?) They stripped the piano, took the door off of the room, took down the walls and ceiling (all punctuated by numerous cups of tea) and still they had to leave the piano where it was.

*Useless Information* 'Right Said Fred' was the inspiration for the name of the British duo who had hits with 'I'm Too Sexy' and 'Don't Talk Just Kiss'.

*Bonus Useless Information* Right Said Fred - the singers not the song- Became only the second British band, after The Beatles, to reach the number one spot on the Billboard charts with a debut single.
